THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Today's day's feature race is the Fridge Spares Wholesale Limited Handicap Stak Stakes for four-year-olds and upwards. Run over ver seven furlongs and 33 yards, nine go to post in what looks a very competitive affair. Top weight ON A SESSION SSION is the class act of the field based on his old form, but hhe is winless for the last three years. However, ever, he has hit the frame on numerous occasions recently and is respected down in grade. CHALLET iss another that has run well lately and commands respect after a solid third at York. TOMMY G won around this track in May and displayed plenty of promise again in a 14-ru 14-runner handicap at Carlisle last week, while GOMETRA GINTY is a five-time coursee winner but will have it all a to do with a penalty.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BEN CURTIS makes the trip up North and has six booked rides des on the card and, although not being on any of the market leaders, all his rides look to have a chance. JOE FANNING FA picks up the ride on Rory, who proved to be a vastly disappointing favourite avourite on Monday under PAUL MULRENNAN, and Joe will hope he can get a different ent tune today. He also has three other cha chances on the card, with Toussarok holding claims in the feature. Once again PAUL MULRENNAN is ke kept busy thoroughout the day and is a jockey to watch.

TRAINERS TO WATCH Just like on Monday's card, CHARLIE and MARK JOHNSTON send just one runner here. Although Monday's odds-on shot didn't go to plan, Toussarok must be worth a shot in the feature race on today's card. PAUL MIDGLEY's sprinters have been flying this season and his sole representative Militia must have an excellent chance of taking home the Racing TV Free For A Month Handicap Stakes, following a tricky Chester outing. TIM EASTERBY looks to have a few big chances at success throughout the card too and his runners are always feared.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.40 THE BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 5) (FOR HORSES IN BAND D) (EBF RESTRICTED RACE QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

2.10 THE WTW PREPARE, PROTECT, PIONEER RESTRICTED MAIDEN FILLIES' STAKES (CLASS 5) (FOR HORSES IN BANDS C AND D) (GBB RACE) This one mile contest for fillies and mares aged 3-5-years-old is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

2.40 THE RACING WELFARE, SUPPORTING RACINGS WORKFORCE HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

3.15 THE FRIDGE SPARES WHOLESALE LIMITED HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

3.50 THE MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE SUPPORTS RACING WITH PRIDE HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

4.20 THE RACING TV FREE FOR A MONTH HANDICAP STAKES This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

4.55 THE TRY RACING TV FOR FREE NOW CLASSIFIED STAKES Our final race is a five furlongs classified stakes for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Eaach horse has beeen given a star ratingg, these are defined beloow: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selectedd to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chancce of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means ouut of the reeckoning but at least one or two hold stronger cllaims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win butt not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

HAPPY PRIDE “Oh my god, I was really anxious, as a flamboyant gay man, to go racing for the first time. Before I got to Musselburgh Racecourse, I was really apprehensive, being a member of the LGBT+ community, in such a traditional sporting environment.

The whole racecourse staff, especially Jane, were very gracious and welcoming. They made the whole race day enjoyable and inclusive. I will definitely be back. Racing is everyone's sport.”

PLAY SMARTER

TERMONATOR has finished runner-up on his last 2 starts and can go one better this time around with Sam James back in the saddle. The 6-y-o should be suited by going back up in trip here, so he is taken to see off the challenge of the in-form Bouncing Bobby who has been running over further of late. Completing the shortlist is Kraken Filly who is narrowly preferred of the Keith Dalgleish-trained pair in the line-up.

PLAY SMARTER

The most appealing of these is POET’S DAWN, who was successful twice off significantly higher marks than this last spring and left the strong impression that he could be about to cash in when a close third at Carlisle last week. The first-time cheekpieces represent something of an unknown (first run in headgear of any type), but that’s no more than a very small concern. Irv also signalled that his turn is near when just touched off at Beverley and he is second choice ahead of Simple Star.

PLAY SMARTER

A winner on three of his six previous visits here, MILITIA looks the way to go having put in a good shift in a higher-grade handicap at Chester earlier this month. Rory failed to justify favouritism here on Monday, but he’s been holding his form well this year and will be a threat if allowed to take his chance. However, Primo’s Comet has slipped to an attractive mark and he is feared most.

ISLE OF DREAMS has been in fine form of late, producing her best effort last time when only edged out close home at this C&D by Lord Of The Glen having been hampered at the start. The 4-y-o remains lightly raced and can get back to winning ways, with Bridgetown the main danger after suffering trouble here at the start of the month. Lord Of The Glen can also go well again back at this course.
