THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Our feature race today is easy to spot. The Betway Queen’s Cup is a Class Two Heritage Herit Handicap run over one mile and six furlongs. s. The prize pot is a very enticing £100,000 and it has attracted a highly competitive co ﬁeld of 14. The Grand National winning trainer rainer Emmet Mullins sends over the top weighted Zero Ten and has booked b the very promising claimer, Benoit de la Sayette. His nearest rival in the weights is the Kevin Stott ridden Island Brave, Bra who is rated 100. At eight-years-old he has plenty of experience, which could prove essential in a race like this. Dioclet Diocletian is having his ﬁrst run for Keith Dalgleish after moving from Nick Alexander, he is on a bit of a redemption mission, so m may be best watched here. Sir Rumi was running in some much hotter races than this last season on and put up a good effort on o his return, so could take some stopping.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H DANIEL TUDHOPE always rides the track well and looks to have ave a solid book of rides today. He rides the Ian William’s trained Enemy in our feature but also has live chances in the 1:32 1:3 and 3:47. JOE FANNING has just the two rides but his ride in our Royal Mile Handicap looks exciting. A very ve promising two-year-old, he’ll be hoping to break his duck ﬁrst time up in a handicap. ROSSA RYAN has an impressive book of rides today and will be hoping for at least a couple of winners to head home wit with. He’ll be looking forward to riding Just Dashing in our Novice race andd Sir Rumi in the t big one.

TRAINERS TO WATCH The eye is immediately drawn to Zero Ten for EMMET MULLINS. He went over to France for a race at Longchamp but could only manage sixth and this should be much more to his liking. EMMET MULLINS doesn’t bring many over but when he does you should deﬁnitely take note. CHARLIE & MARK JONSTON have just started to hit some form this season after a slow start, so no doubt we will see one of their horses in the winner’s enclosure today. The ﬁnal trainer to watch would be RICHARD HANNON, who looks to be sending a very strong team North to try and take home some of the prize money.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.32 THE BETWAY ROYAL MILE HANDICAP (CLASS 3) This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-old which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners’ carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

2.04 THE BETWAY MUSSELBURGH SILVER ARROW HANDICAP (CLASS 2) Our next race is a seven-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

2.39 THE BETWAY HOLYROOD HANDICAP (CLASS 2) This race is a ﬁve-furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a speciﬁc ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

3.14 THE BETWAY QUEEN’S CUP (CLASS 2 HERITAGE HANDICAP) This race is a one mile six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a speciﬁc ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

3.47 THE BETWAY EBF NOVICE STAKES (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) This ﬁve-furlong Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

4.22 THE READ ANDREW BALDING ON BETWAY INSIDER HANDICAP Our next race is a ﬁve-furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

4.57 THE BETWAY HANDICAP (CLASS 5) Our ﬁnal race is a another handicap but this time ran over a mile for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. EASTER SATURDAY 2022… THE FEATURE RACES BETWAY QUEEN’S CUP RUN for the first time in 2017, the Queen’s Cup is one of only a handful of races in the UK to bear the name of the reigning monarch in its title, and the only one in Scotland. When Her Majesty visited Musselburgh for our bi-centenary celebrations in 2016, our general manager Bill Farnsworth asked if we could name a race in her honour. We were all thrilled when she said: ‘Yes!’ Mark Johnston, the North Yorkshire-based Scot who in 2018 became the winning-most trainer in British Flat racing history, has scooped the last two editions of this valuable prize. Austrian School routed 13 rivals as he stormed to glory under evergreen jockey Joe Fanning in 2019. Indeed, the six lengths by which he thrashed runner-up Ulster is comfortably the largest winning margin we’ve seen in this race. Themaxwecan battled to a much harder-fought success 12 months ago, thrusting his head in front on the line to deny Cardano. The winner’s stable-mate Hochfield came a close third, while Johnston also saddled the sixth, seventh and tenth-placed finishers for good measure! Now jointly training in partnership with his son Themaxwecan Charlie, the Johnstons are well represented in today’s race with three runners – Themaxwecan, Soapy Stevens and State Of Bliss. Carbon Dating had spent the winter racing in the Middle East – without much success, it must be said – prior to his victory in 2017. But given a confident ride by Tadhg O’Shea, the Irish-trained Carbon Dating defied odds of 12-1 to beat local favourite Maleficient Queen. The victory was a memorable one for Glasgow owner Jimmy Long’s Thistle Bloodstock, as his other runner The Tartan Spartan performed with credit to grab third place. Atrocious weather in the build-up to 2018 meant racing took place on heavy ground – a first in living memory for Flat racing at Musselburgh. Brandon Castle (10-1) made light of the muddy conditions, however. Ridden positively from the starting gate, Brandon Castle steadily opened up a big lead under his Tranent-born jockey Andrew Mullen, who kept just enough up his sleeve to repel the late thrusts of hot favourite Time To Study and home hero Euchen Glen.

BETWAY ROYAL MILE HANDICAP FIRST staged in 2014, this race’s brief history tells us one thing – don’t bank on the favourite coming up trumps! Naamoos’s victory last year at odds of 11-2 saw him become the shortest-priced winner in the six editions we’ve staged so far (it didn’t take place in 2020 or 2016). With previous winners at 16-1, 11-1, 7-1, 13-2 and 6-1, the Royal Mile has so far proven a profitable race for the bookies. Yorkshire-based trainers Mark Johnston and Richard Fahey have dominated this race for the last four years, notching two wins apiece. Naamoos was followed home in second place by his Johnston stable-mate Forest Falcon, while in 2018 Johnston’s first winner Book Of Dreams came home in front of the Fahey-trained Chingachgook. The roles were reversed 12 months later when Coolagh Forest gained ‘revenge’ for Fahey by running down Johnston’s Reggae Runner in the final strides. Fahey is also the man responsible for the biggest-priced winner in 2017, when Cullingworth (16-1) beat fellow outsider Grey Britain (22-1), with Dr Julius No (9-1) grabbing third. If only we’d borrowed a crystal ball that day – a £1 bet on the Trifecta (selecting the first three finishers in the correct order) paid out more than £5,000!

BETWAY HOLYROOD HANDICAP A NEW addition this year, the Betway Holyrood Handicap takes the place of the The Inch’s Cider Scottish Sprint Cup, which has been moved to a new feature slot on Saturday 4 June. That race may well prove to be a target for a number of the runners in today’s field. They include likely favourite Raasel, who won five consecutive races during a golden six-week spell last autumn. Or perhaps this race may prove tailor-made – in name, at least – for ner of the Makanah is the only one of the 11 runners to have won at Musselburgh before. EASTER SATURDAY - 16 APRIL 2022 The nearest train station to Musselburgh Racecourse is Wallyford on the Edinburgh Waverley to North Berwick train line. On racedays we organise a courtesy bus from Wallyford and Newcraighall train stations to the Racecourse, returning after racing.

WALLYFORD STATION RETURNS Buses will depart from the racecourse side (north) of Linkﬁeld Road at the corner of Millhill. Two buses will operate continually between 16:30 and 18:45.

NEWCRAIGHALL TRAIN STATION RETURNS Buses to Newcraighall will depart 16:30 / 17:30 / 18:30 to coincide with departure to Tweedbank at 17:07 / 18:06 / 19:07. Please note there is a half hourly train service during this period but our Courtesy bus will only operate hourly. Please refer to Scotrail.co.uk for the most up to date train times for your journey. Please note that the times may be changeable and it is best to check 24 hours before travelling.

CAR PARK SHUTTLE Our shuttle buses run every 10 minutes to and from the Racecourse car park up until the second race and they restart after the fourth race. The bus stop is located on the corner of Millhill and Balcarres Place.

SHUTTLE E BUS

Our shuttlee buses run every 10 minutess to and from the Racecourse se car park up until un the secondd race and they restart resta after the fourth th race. The bus stop is located on thee corner of Millhill Millhi and Balcarres Place ace

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.

ATM

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.

Two viewing ramps for guests in wheelchairs only are situated in front of the main Grandstand. We have disabled access toilets in the Old Weighing Room Bistro, Rockavon Bar, Pinkie Bar & the Links Pavilion Entrance.
