THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

There re are plenty of exciting Go North Final races today and our fifth race looks l to be the most exciting on our seven-race ace card. The Go North Lady Buttons Mares’ Series Final is a handicap hurdle for four-years-old and upwards fillies and mares which have started in at least two Go North Lady Buttons Serie Series Qualfiers during the season. The Harriet Graham am and Gary Rutherford-trained Millarville will be aiming to make it back-t back-to-back victories here at Musselburgh after edging dging out Cancan earlier in the month. The pair will go head-to-head once mo more and the six-year-old Cancan will be keen to reverse the result this time out. Latino Fling with Brian Hughes on board will be hoping to make it two wins from her last three outings, having won at Catterick earlier in thee year. y

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES continues to hunt for more winners and he’ll ’ll be hoping to leave a mark on proceedings here today. Hughes has six rides including Zamond, Collingham and Garde G Des Champs. It’s also worth keeping an eye on Ryan Mania, who heads here for ﬁve rides including Saryshagan, Goodtimes Badtimes and Brandy McQueen. Thee Sandy Thomson-trained Goodtimes Badtim Badtimes has been quite consistent this season, not ﬁnishing outside the top three in his last four trips so it’ll bbe interesting to see if he can produce another strong performance.

TRAINERS TO WATCH DONALD MCCAIN sends six runners here today as he looks to build on his strong form over the past two weeks. He is currently running at a 31% strike rate over the last 14 days and will be keen to make an impact here. He has two runners in the Go North Grey Bomber Series Final in the form of Kayfast Warrior and Collingham before Kensington Art and Zamond run in the Go North Sea Pigeon Series Final. McCain’s last two runners of the day will be Akentrick and Latino Fling. Jockey Brian Hughes teams up with McCain for four of those rides as the pair look to add to their recent successes.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.15 THE RACING POST SUPPORTS GO NORTH WEEKEND NOVICES’ HURDLE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and one furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two hurdle races.

1.45 THE GO NORTH GREY BOMBER SERIES FINAL (CLASS 2)(A HANDICAP HURDLE) (GBB RACE)

This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for juvenile four-year-olds which have started in two Go North Grey Bomber Series races during the current season. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2.20 THE GO NORTH SEA PIGEON SERIES FINAL (CLASS 2)(A HANDICAP HURDLE) (GBB RACE)

This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have started in at least two Go North Sea Pigeon Series Qualiﬁers during the current season. 3.30 THE GO NORTH LADY BUTTONS MARES’ SERIES FINAL (CLASS 2) (A HANDICAP HURDLE) (GBB RACE)

This is a two mile and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-old and upwards fillies and mares which have started in at least two Go North Lady Buttons Series Qualifiers during the current season. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. 4.40 THE VISIT IRISH STORE SALES WITH ITM MARES’ OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 4) (CATEGORY 2 ELIMINATION) (GBB RACE)

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

GO NORTH SERIES FINALS...March 25 The Go North Series, in association with the Racing Post, is a celebration of grassroots National Hunt racing. It is a season-long initiative aimed at providing a valuable final for owners of horses which are not rated highly enough to compete at the major spring festivals like Cheltenham and Aintree, but whose support nevertheless is vital to the continued success and prosperity of the sport in scotland and the north. Horses need to run in a series qualifying races throughout the season to be eligible for one of the finals, staged across nine different categories. The series culminates with Go North Weekend, which starts today here at Musselburgh, continues tomorrow at Kelso and climaxes at Carlisle on Sunday. The five hurdles finals and the bumper final are worth £30,000 apiece, and the three chase finals £35,000. Each of the nine categories are named after famous Northern-trained horses from recent decades. We’re delighted to stage four of the hurdles finals here at Musselburgh this afternoon.

1.45: THE GREY BOMBER SERIES FINAL Last year’s winner: CALDWELL (7-1) Owners: Mr & Mrs N Dower Trainer: Michael Scudamore Jockey: Richard Patrick Tale of the Race: Sent into the lead from an early stage, Caldwell didn’t help his cause by jumping out to his left at several hurdles. However, it didn’t stop him from recording an impressive first hurdles win, storming home by six-and-a-half lengths from the Nicky Henderson-trained Progressive on his handicap debut. What’s in a Name: The Grey Bomber won all five of his races over hurdles, including Cheltenham’s Triumph Hurdle Trial in 1982, and was described as potentially the best horse legendary County Durham trainer Denys Smith ever had. Sadly, The Grey Bomber never got to fulfil his immense potential - he was electrocuted in a freak accident after a storm had blown power cables into a pool of water which he stood in on his way to Smith’s gallops.

2.20: SEA PIGEON SERIES FINAL Last year’s winner: IOLANI (33-1) Owners: SJD Racing & Dianne Sayer Trainer: Dianne Sayer Jockey: Sean Quinlan Tale of the Race: Iolani arrived at Musselburgh seemingly out of form after finishing down the field on his previous run at Newcastle two-and-a-half weeks earlier. That was the nine-year-old’s first race following a four-month lay-off after wind surgery but, with a fast-run race proving right up his street, Iolani powered to a fifth career hurdles win at huge odds. What’s in a Name: Sea Pigeon was one of the best northern horses of the modern era, winning 37 of his 85 races over hurdles and on the Flat. He was a dual winner of the Champion Hurdle (1980, 1981), the Scottish Champion Hurdle (1977, 1978) and the Fighting Fifth Hurdle (1978, 1980), as well as the Chester Cup (1977, 1978) and The Ebor (1979).

2.55: BRINDISI BREEZE SERIES FINAL Last year’s winner: RATFACEMCDOUGALL (16-5 fav) Owner: Mrs Carolyn Kendrick Trainer: Graeme McPherson Jockey: Max Kendrick Tale of the Race: Ratfacemcdougall had already won three times during the 2020-21 season, including one of the Go North qualifiers here at Musselburgh. Given an excellent front-running ride by Max Kendrick, who judged the fractions to perfection as the duo bounded to a clear-cut success. What’s in a Name: Brindisi Breeze’s emotional victory for Lucinda Russell in the 2012 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle was a first at the Cheltenham Festival by a Scottish-trained horse for 10 years; and first by a Scottish horse in a Grade 1 at the Festival since Harry Hastings in 1985. Tragically, both Brindisi Breeze and his hugely talented Haddington jockey Campbell Gillies died later that summer only a few weeks apart.

3.30: LADY BUTTONS MARES’ SERIES FINAL Last year’s winner: ISLAND MAHEE (10-1) Owner: Mrs E Hamilton Trainer: Stuart Crawford Jockey: James Bowen Tale of the Race: Trained only a stone’s throw from Larne ferry terminal in Northern Ireland by Stuart Crawford and ridden by teenage Welsh jockey James Bowen, Island Mahee picked the perfect opportunity to break her duck at the 11th attempt in this valuable contest. Island Mahee and runner-up Hawthorn Cottage changed places at the head of affairs throughout in a race where it paid to race close to the pace. What’s in a Name: Affectionately known as the ‘Queen of Yorkshire’, Lady Buttons won 15 of her 33 career races and was the horse who put her Catterick-based trainer Phil Kirby on racing’s map. Enjoyed her ﬁnest hours at Doncaster, where she twice won the Grade 2 Yorkshire Rose Mares’ Hurdle (2019, 2020) and the Listed Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares’ Chase (2018, 2019).

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.
