THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

The fourth race of the day is arguably our most exciting race of the day and sees sseven runners go to post. £15,000 is on offer forr this handicap chase over two miles and seven furlongs. f BUSTER VALENTINE is the top weighted for Mark Walford, who has booked Sean Sea Quinlan to ride the 124 rated nine-yearold. Brian Hughes is on board FIRST ACCOUNT for trainer Keith Dagleish as tthe eight-year-old gelding looks to go one bette etter than last time out. PARIS TEXAS, DRAGONFRUIT, METHODTOTHEMADNESS, SCOOP THE POT A AND SEEMINGLY SO complete the card as they look to take home the day’s main prize.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H The eye is immediately drawn to BRIAN HUGHES, who makess the journey north for six rides. His ﬁrst ride is on Burn The Evidence in the Racing TV Cosmis Case Mares’ Novices Hurdle. Hur He’ll then follow that up with rides on Spider’s Bite, River Walk, First Account, unt, Monsieur Co and Sweet Auburn. A SEAN QUINLAN also travels ls up for six rides and he’s on board Buster Valentine V in the feature race of the day. His other rides are Celtic Dancer, I’m To Blame, Bridge Road, Paki Pakie’s Dream and Andre Le Not

TRAINERS TO WATCH LUCINDA RUSSELL sends eight here and she has Methodtothemadness in the feature race of the day and she also sends two in to the bumper, in the form of Scottish Wind and Snow Joeking. DONALD MCCAIN sends four to the track, with Nora The Xplorer, River Walk, Killane and Sweet Auburn looking to leave their mark on the day’s events. GORDON ELLIOTT sends just one to to the track and that comes in in the form of Burn The Evidence in the ﬁrst race fo the day with Brian Hughes on board.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.35 THE RACING TV COSMIC CASE MARES’ NOVICES’ HURDLE (CLASS 4) Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile novices’ hurdle race is for mares and ﬁllies aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races/two steeple chases.

2.10 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 5) This three mile steeple chase is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged ﬁve-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than three hurdle races/two steeple chases. Initially, the weights are set according to sex with ﬁllies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals before previous hurdle race/steeple chase winners are allocated a 7lb penalty for each race won.

2.45 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 4) This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

3.20 THE ROYAL CALEDONIAN HUNT HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 3) This is a three miles, about two furlongs handicap hurdle race for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a speciﬁc ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

3.55 THE BET AT RACINGTV.COM NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 5) This two miles and fou furlongs hurdle race is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than three hurdle races. Initially, the weights are set according to sex with ﬁllies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals before previous hurdle race/steeple chase winners are allocated a 7lb penalty for each race won.

5.00 THE 100% RACING TV PROFITS BACK TO RACING OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 4) As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

THE ROYAL CALEDONIAN HUNT The hunt was instituted at Hamilton in 1777 under the title “The Hunters Club” but the name was changed the following year to The Caledonian Hunt. On the occasion of the visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822, His Majesty became Patron of the Hunt whose members gave a ball in his honour in Edinburgh. SHUTTLE E BUS

Our shuttlee buses run every 10 minutess to and from the Racecourse se car park up until un the secondd race and they restart resta after the fourth th race. The bus stop is located on thee corner of Millhill Millhi and Balcarres Place ace

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
