THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

The ﬁfth race of the day is arguably our most exciting race of the day and sees eight runners go to post. £25,000 is on offer and unlike ike the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, this one is a handicap. FANZIO is the top weighted for Richard Hobson, who hass booked Brain Hughes to ride the 134 rated seven-year-old. Paul Nicholls Nicho has a lethal record in the race and won three on the bounce before being dethroned in last years renewal by Tim Reed Reed. Nicholls sends GLAJOU to the track and Harry arry Cobden comes to ride. At only six there could be more to come and he wouldn’t wo want the ground to become too soft as he was a non runner on soft ground last time out. THE MOUSE DOCTOR w was given a 4lb drop in the ratings after his distant third last time out and with Tom Midley booked oked he is on a dangerous mark. m

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H The eye is immediately drawn to HARRY COBDEN, who makess the journey north for two rides. Saint Sonnet is his first mount in the Pertemps Network Group Handicap ndicap Hurdle, a race r run over almost three miles, it is one of the last qualifiers for the final in March. arch. If he can win that, he will w be looking to follow it up with Glajou in our feature and go home with a quickfire double. SEAN BOWEN BOW rides Calvados in our second race, The Scottish Triumph Hurdle, a race that has thrown up some fu future superstars, it will be interesting to see who can add their name to the roll oll of hon honour.

TRAINERS TO WATCH CHARLES BYRNES has been ﬂying as of late and sends The Big Galloper to contest the Pertemps Network Group Handicap Hurdle. Adam Wedge takes the ride and it’s rare he sends one over to go sightseeing. STUART COLTHRED has just the one runner on the card in our Class Four Handicap Chase. Pookie Pekan carries top weight but wouldn’t be without a chance in a four-runner ﬁeld. He was an emphatic winner on his last start and while the handicapper hasn’t missed him, he is sure to go well again. JIM GOLDIE isn’t known for his runners over obstacles but keep an eye on Pammi to see how she gets on in the lucky last.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.00 THE BET365 NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE This is a two mile four furlong handicap steeple chase for novice ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

1.32 THE BET365 SCOTTISH TRIUMPH HURDLE RACE (A JUVENILE HURDLE) (CLASS 1)(LISTED RACE) Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. This race is a juvenile trial and is for horses aged four only. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this two miles hurdle race will now have an ofﬁcial rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially, each horse is allocated 11st with ﬁllies then receiving a 7lb allowance, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at a certain level. These penalties range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap hurdle race, to 5lb for a Class 1 weight-forage hurdle victory.

2.05 THE BET365 SCOTTISH SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April. This particular two miles novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

2.40 THE PERTEMPS NETWORK GROUP HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a three miles, about two furlongs handicap hurdle race for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a speciﬁc ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

3.15 THE BET365 SCOTTISH CHAMPION HANDICAP CHASE (FOR THE BOWES-LYON TROPHY) This is a two miles handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

3.50 THE BET365 HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH RED RUM SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a three miles, about two and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

4.20 THE BET365 HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race, as is usually the case.

Here’s our guide to spotting them…

THE HORSES BROADWAY JOE (BET365 NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE, 1.0PM) Fast becoming a Musselburgh specialist, winning twice over fences here before Christmas. That made it three victories in a row over fences following a debut success at Kelso in October. Lost his unbeaten record when runner-up to Mackenburg at our last meeting ﬁve weeks ago. However, it won’t be a surprise if this usually sound jumper returns to winning ways this afternoon.

IMPULSIVE ONE (bet365 Scottish Triumph Hurdle, 1.32pm) A winner of his ﬁrst two starts over hurdles, at Plumpton and Huntingdon in the autumn, he has run really well in defeat in classy races twice since then. The form of his most recent run, when a close-up third in a Grade 2 at Doncaster, is strong form. The only runner on today’s card for top trainer Nicky Henderson, who has won this race three times before. And the sole ride for jockey James Bowen, who boasts an impressive record of three wins, a second and a third from just ﬁve previous rides at Musselburgh!

SINCE DAY ONE (BET365 SCOTTISH SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE, 2.05PM) Unbeaten in three starts over hurdles this season, all of them at Newcastle. He’s been getting better with every run and this smooth-travelling type, who is also a neat and nimble jumper, has more than earned his shot at a valuable prize like today’s. Time will tell how high up the ladder he can continue to climb.eting ﬁve weeks ago. However, it won’t be a surprise if this usually sound jumper returns to winning ways this afternoon.

WAKOOL (PERTEMPS NETWORK GROUP HANDICAP HURDLE, 2.40PM)

Popular grey has thrived since stepping up to today’s distance of three miles. A winner here at Musselburgh in November and again in December, six-year-old Wakool produced his most impressive performance so far when storming to a clear-cut success at Ayr early last month. Should he make it four wins in a row today, Fife trainer Nick Alexander can dream of heading to some big gigs this spring.

THE JOCKEYS BRIAN HUGHES The winning-most rider in Musselburgh’s history with 110 winners going into yesterday’s action – a staggering 43 more than the now-retired Tony Dobbin. Co Armagh-born Brian won his ﬁrst jump jockeys’ championship in 2019-2020 and is miles clear of Sam TwistonDavies in the race to reclaim the title relinquished to Harry Skelton last season.Brian has ﬁve chances to increase his total today – Inca Prince (1.32), Since Day One (2.05), One Night In Milan (2.40), Fanzio (3.15) and I’m To Blame (4.20).

HARRY COBDEN Somerset-born Harry is one of the top riders in the country and the stable No1 for 12-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls. So determined was he to make the grade as a jockey, Harry is rumoured to have even skipped his GCSE English exam to head to Leicester races, where he rode a 33-1 winner! Harry boasts an impressive record at Musselburgh, having ridden 10 winners from just 19 previous attempts here. Saint Sonnet (2.40) and Glajou (3.15) are his two rides this afternoon.

SEAN BOWEN Older brother of James Bowen, who is also in action here this afternoon, Welshman Sean sits proudly inside the top ﬁve of jump jockeys’ standings. With more than 70 winners so far, he’s also on target to beat his personal-best season of 91. Although Sean has ridden only one previous winner at Musselburgh (from just seven rides), he has two top chances to add to his tally today – Calvados (1.32) and Brorson (2.40).

We Have A Dream (2018)

SOME SMART HORSES FEATURE ON THIS RACE’S DISTINGUISHED ROLL OF HONOUR – CLARCAM, WE HAVE A DREAM AND HARGAM AMONG THEM. Yet it says much for the bet365 Scottish Triumph Hurdle’s status as a launchpad for future stars that its most successful graduate achieved only second-class honours here. Purple Moon was a monster of a horse, who went on to pocket thousands of pounds, Euros and dollars as a globetrotting cash machine. Sold for €550,000 before he’d even raced on the Flat, he was later snapped up for more than £450,000 by owner Craig Bennett, who made his name and fortune with communications giant Phones4U, before embarking on a hurdling career. Things started well, winning here at Musselburgh at odds of 4-6 in January 2007. But he proved no match for Degas Art in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle a month later, when beaten 12 lengths into the runners-up spot. That proved to be Purple Moon’s second and final race over hurdles – yet it was also a game-changing moment which would come to yield staggering rewards. Swapping Nicky Richards’ jumps-focused Cumbria yard for the Newmarket one of Luca Cumani, Purple Moon quickly set about making up for lost time back on the Flat. That August, he landed a Listed race at Goodwood, and followed it up three weeks later as a winning favourite of Europe’s richest handicap, The Ebor, at York. Flown Down Under for an ambitious tilt at that November’s Melbourne Cup, Purple Moon ran a stormer to finish a close second to local hero Efficient. Purple Moon failed to win another race after that, yet it didn’t stop him raking in the readies all over the world with placed finishes in races like the 2008 Hong Kong Vase, the 2009 Sheema Classic in Dubai and even the 2010 Ascot Gold Cup. By the time he was retired later that year, he’d amassed career earnings of almost £1.2million. Seven years on from Purple Moon, Clarcam also finished runner-up in this race. While the winner that year, Broughton, failed to fire in the Triumph itself, Clarcam was leading the Fred Winter field at Cheltenham when he crashed out at the second-last hurdle. Mercifully he emerged unscathed, although the same could not be said for his young jockey Bryan Cooper, who sustained a leg break so horrific that the Irish Turf Club’s chief medical officer described it as “the worst fracture I’ve ever seen”. There were better days for Cooper on Clarcam after that, most notably Grade 1 victories during the 2014-15 season at Leopardstown and Aintree. Victory in this race established We Have A Dream as one of the leading fancies for the 2018 Triumph Hurdle, but illness caused him to miss the Festival altogether. He gained handsome compensation a few weeks later, however, as Daryl Jacob guided him to Grade 1 glory at Aintree. Other notable winners here include another Nicky Henderson-trained horse in Hargam. The JP McManus-owned grey’s runaway success in 2015 also proved to be the last winner the legendary AP McCoy would ride at Musselburgh prior to his retirement three months later, with a CV boasting 4,348 winners and 20 consecutive champion jump jockey titles. Our 2010 winner Carlito Brigante managed only fourth place in the Triumph Hurdle itself, but tasted Festival success 12 months later with a runaway win in the Coral Cup for Gordon Elliott. LAST YEAR’S RACE, WON BY THE DONALD MCCAIN-TRAINED AND BRIAN HUGHES-RIDDEN BAREBACK JACK, HAS TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THE STRONGEST RACES EVER STAGED AT SCOTTISH FESTIVAL TRIALS. While Bareback Jack has run only once since, when fourth to My Drogo in Kelso’s Grade 2 Premier Hurdle last March, three of the horses that chased him home have gone on to bigger and better things in the last 12 months. None more so than runner-up Tommy’s Oscar, who has won his last four races in a row since late November. They include the Hogmaneigh Hurdle here at Musselburgh on New Year’s Day and, most recently, the Grade 2 Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock. As one of just four horses trained by husband-and-wife team Ian and Ann Hamilton, sheep and cattle farmers from Northumberland, he will write one of sport’s great underdog stories should he dethrone unbeaten super mare Honeysuckle in next month’s Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Third Time Lucki, the 10-11 favourite who finished fourth, has emerged as a high-class novice chaser this season, winning three times, including Grade 2s at Cheltenham and Doncaster. And Belfast Banter, who finished only sixth of the seven runners here, went on to beat 24 rivals in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival; then made a successful transition to the top level by winning the Grade 1 Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree’s Grand National meeting only three weeks later. He was recently bought for £130,000 by new owners to continue his career in America. The 2016 edition of this race was also a high-class one. Kim Bailey’s Charbel ran out an impressive winner, turning in a powerful display of bold front-running and slick jumping that left the well-touted Brain Power trailing in his wake. On his next start, Charbel would finish ‘only’ fifth in the Supreme at the Festival – but time has shown that to be no ‘ordinary’ Supreme. It was won by the imperious Altior, who would go on to set a world record for a jumps horse of 19 consecutive wins. Runner-up Min racked up seven Grade 1 victories in his career, while third-placed Buveur D’Air won back-to-back Champion Hurdles in 2017 and 2018. Finishing behind Charbel at Cheltenham were horses of the calibre of Supasundae, Petit Mouchoir and Bellshill – all of which later won multiple Grade 1 races. That’s something Charbel never managed to achieve, although he did taste success at Grade 2 level with victory in the 2018 Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon. Some Plan, the inaugural winner of this race in 2015 when trained by Tom George, also went on to better things over fences. His career highlight was victory in the Grade 1 Irish Arkle Chase in 2017, for a new trainer in Henry De Bromhead, although there was more than an element of fortune to it. In the years since Wyse Hill Teabags won the first edition in 2014 for Renfrewshire handler Jim Goldie, our qualifier has been dominated by major stables from south of the border. In 2015 and 2016, Nicky Henderson landed the prize with a pair of well-backed favourites. Dawalan came into the 2015 contest on the back of a narrow win at Aintree the previous December. Taking the step up to three miles in his stride, Henderson’s grey sent many punters home with cash jangling in their pockets by running on powerfully to beat Kruzhlinin at odds of 11-4. He failed to shine in the Final itself, or back at Aintree the following month, and was soon snapped up by America’s leading jumps owner, Irvin S Naylor, and shipped Stateside. Jumps racing in the US doesn’t possess the same strength in depth as in Britain or Ireland, nor does it enjoy anything like the same profile due to the American public’s obsession with dirt racing. But it still stages some prestigious and valuable races, notably the US Grand National, which takes place at Far Hills racetrack in New Jersey every October. The obstacles are of similar size to British hurdles and bear little resemblance to the large spruce fences for which the Aintree Grand National is renowned. They proved very much to Dawalan’s liking, however, as he provided Naylor with an instant return on his outlay by repelling Gordon Elliott’s Irish raider Eshtiaal to bag the £115,000 first prize. Dawalan followed up that victory just a month later by capturing another Grade 1 prize, the Colonial Cup Chase, in South Carolina. Cup Final (11-8fav) overtook Warriors Tale on the run-in to hand Henderson back-to-back wins in 2016. He was pulled up in the Final at Cheltenham, but bounced back from that disappointment to land a 24-runner thriller at Punchestown’s very own Festival the following month. Dawalan’s owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede secured a second victory in this race in 2018 through Calett Mad and jockey Daryl Jacob. A switch from front-running to hold-up tactics proved the key as Jacob gradually crept into contention before delivering Nigel Twiston-Davies’ runner to lead at the final flight. Staying on strongly to the line, Calett Mad came home two lengths in front of another southern raider, the Kim Bailey-trained Cresswell Legend. Twelve-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls also has his name on this race’s roll of honour courtesy of El Bandit in 2017 and Highland Hunter in 2020. On each occasion, victory provided Somerset-based Nicholls with a staggering fifth winner of a highly productive long-distance raid to Scottish Festival Trials weekend. THE BET365 SCOTTISH CHAMPION CHASE MAY WELL SHARE ITS NAME WITH ONE OF THE FLAGSHIP EVENTS AT NEXT MONTH’S CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL, BUT THEY ARE TWO VERY DIFFERENT RACES IN NATURE. While the Queen Mother Champion Chase is a championship race of Grade 1 status, our Champion Chase is a handicap for horses with a maximum rating of 142. In form terms, there’s a quantum leap between the two. Yet our 2020 winner Greaneteen, who won here off a mark of 138, came mighty close to bridging that gap at last season’s Festival. Greaneteen romped to an easy Musselburgh victory under Bryony Frost in February 2020, won again at Fakenham 13 days later, and then finished fourth in the Grand Annual Chase at Cheltenham. But it’s over the last 11 months that the Chris Giles-owned eight-year-old has firmly established himself as one of the leading two-mile chasers on either side of the Irish Sea. Despite being the 50-1 rank outsider of the nine runners for last March’s Champion Chase at Cheltenham, Greaneteen was beaten only two lengths in fourth behind winner Put The Kettle On. Dismissed as a fluke in some quarters, Greanteteen proved it to be anything but by notching his first Grade 1 victory in the Celebration Chase at Sandown on his next run. The Esher track has become a happy hunting ground for Greaneteen – only a few weeks ago, he doubled his Grade 1 tally with an impressive victory in Sandown’s most prestigious race of the season, the Tingle Creek Chase, where he easily beat stable-mate Hitman. Greaneteen’s trainer Paul Nicholls has often been the man to follow in this race, landing three of the nine previous renewals. Like Greaneteen, Nicholls’ 2017 winner San Benedeto also went on to achieve success at Grade 1 level. After slamming Witness In Court by eight lengths here, San Benedeto won at Doncaster the following month and again at Ascot that April, earning him a tilt at the Grade 1 Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree’s Grand National meeting only six days later. Fate played a significant hand in his career-defining moment, however, as stable-mate Politologue stumbled badly two strides after the final fence and crumpled to the Merseyside turf. Jockey Sam Twiston-Davies’ misfortune was to be another rider’s gain. In this case Nick Scholfield, who galvanised San Benedeto to wear down Forest Bihan in the shadow of the winning post to secure a famous victory. Nicholls also landed this prize in 2018 with the Frost-ridden Marracudja, one of only three winning favourites since the race’s inception in 2012. The first was Ifandbutwhynot, whose narrow victory in 2015 came on what was to prove the final day that the legendary A P McCoy would ride at Musselburgh. Not that anyone knew it at the time, as a few days later jump racing’s greatest-ever jockey stunned fans up and down the country by revealing, in a live TV interview while still on horseback after a race at Newbury, that he would be retiring at the end of that season. If you fancy a big-priced runner in today’s field, then don’t be put off. Our shuttlee buses run every 10 minutess to and from the Racecourse se car park up until un the secondd race and they restart resta after the fourth th race. The bus stop is located on thee corner of Millhill Millhi and Balcarres Place ace

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
