THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Although hough there are many races to look forward to today, the feature is the Edinburgh National Handicap Chase. Seven runners go to post ost and the market is headed by HIGHLAND HUNTER for Paul Nicholls. He’s ran two brilliant races this season and is a model of consistency. Lorcan Williams gets the ride and despite carrying top weight weigh he looks the one to beat. Last year’s hero MIGHTT THUNDER returns to try and retain his crown but looks to be up against it oon this year’s form. He ran two good races after fter winning last year’s renewal, but he has struggled since and was pulled up on his last start in the Welsh National. Dropped 2lb for the effort he will want to show some of last season’s form to feature he here. Fergal O’Brien makes the long trip North with his runner, CAPTAIN CATTISTOCK who on somee his older form may have a chance c now the handicapper has relented.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H AP HESKIN looks to have a really good book of rides and will no doubt be hoping to head home after riding a few winners. He rides the exciting Where It All Began for Gord Gordon Elliott and all three runners are owned by his retained connections, The McNeill cNeill family. LORCAN WILLIAMS WILLIAM and valuable claimer ANGUS CHELEDA both head up with ith the Nicholls team and they will be disappointed disappo if they couldn’t get a winner between them. Northern favourite BRIAN HUGHES has his usual fant fantastic and will be hoping that he can win a few over the Southern raiders. He along with DANNY MCM MCMENAMIN will be ﬂying the Northern ﬂag.

TRAINERS TO WATCH There are a couple of obvious trainers to keep an eye out on today and two hail from across the Irish sea. GORDON ELLIOTT sends one over to contest the second race of the day, the Scottish Stayers Novices’ Hurdle, run over three miles. JOHN MCCONNELL also has one in the race, Bardenstown Lad, the seven-year-old will be hoping to get his head in front, despite giving away 3lb. PAUL NICHOLLS sends four runners to the track, including the favourite in our feature, Highland Hunter. Nicholls also has one in the Hunter Chase, our ﬁnal race on the card, which gives amateurs a fantastic opportunity to bag themselves a winner!

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12.57 THE BET365 FRODON NOVICES’ STEEPLE CHASE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April. This particular two miles, about four and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged ﬁve-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

1.29 THE BET365 SCOTTISH STAYERS NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE This three miles hurdle race is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than three hurdle races. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex with ﬁllies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals before previous hurdle race winners are allocated a penalty dependent on the class of race which they have won.

2.05 THE BET365 AULD YIN CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ VETERANS’ HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ VETERANS’ CHASE SERIES QUALIFIER) As the race title suggests, a Veterans’ steeple chase is designed speciﬁcally for the older horses of the National Hunt scene. In order to qualify for this two miles, about six furlongs handicap, horses must be ten-years-old or older and be ofﬁcially rated between 0 and 130. These types of races often attract some big-race winners from the past who are still enjoying their sport and have no intention of entering retirement just yet!

2.40 THE BET365 SCOTTISH COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a speciﬁc ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

3.10 THE BET365 HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 4) (GO NORTH SEA PIGEON SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race, as is usually the case.

3.45 THE BET365 EDINBURGH NATIONAL HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE This is a four mile handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 150 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145.

4.19 THE BET365 SCOTTISH FOXHUNTER OPEN HUNTERS’ STEEPLE CHASE A Hunter Chase gives the regulars of the Point-to-Pointing world a chance to shine under National Hunt rules. A horse is only qualified for this type of event if it holds a Hunters’ Certificate, something provided by a Master of Hounds to prove that the horse has been regularly hunted throughout the season. This particular event is for five-year-olds and upwards, and is to be run over three miles, about two and a half furlongs. All Hunter Chases are restricted to amateur jockeys.

SEEING STARS bet365 Scottish Festival Trials weekend is all about discovering racing’s stars of the future. Horses, trainers, jockeys and owners ﬂock to this valuable and prestigious meeting from all over the UK and Ireland to compete. So, who are the potential stars on show this afternoon? Here’s our guide to spotting them…

THE HORSES BARDENSTOWN LAD (bet365 Scottish Stayers’ Hurdle, 1.29pm) Trained 20 miles north of Dublin by John O’Connell, who has pulled off plenty of successful raids to Musselburgh in the past, Bardenstown Lad has won two of his three races over hurdles so far. He banked valuable Cheltenham experience in winning at the home of jump racing on his most recent start back in October. The form of that race is strong, and another win here will almost certainly book his ticket for a tilt at the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at next month’s Cheltenham Festival.

FIVEANDTWENTY (bet365 Scottish County Hurdle, 2.40pm) Won her only start here at Musselburgh on the Flat for trainer Mark Johnston, plus her first three over hurdles for the jumps yard of Grand National-winning trainer Donald McCain. The most recent of those came in the bet365 Scottish Triumph Hurdle at this fixture 12 months ago. Fiveandtwenty hasn’t won since then and she was beaten for the first time in five runs here when finishing fourth in the Hogmaneigh Hurdle on New Year’s Day. She’s a real Musselburgh specialist and will always be a star in our eyes!

HIGHLAND HUNTER (bet365 Edinburgh National, 3.45pm) Is already a winner at Scottish Festival Trials, having landed the Pertemps Hurdle qualiﬁer here in 2020, narrowly beating one of today’s rivals Mighty Thunder. Has continued to climb the ranks over fences since then, winning the London National at Sandown in early December and then ﬁnishing runner-up in the Welsh National on his most recent start. Could use today’s contest as a stepping stone to the world’s greatest race, the Grand National, at Aintree in April.

MIGHTY THUNDER (bet365 Edinburgh National, 3.45pm)

Runner-up to Highland Hunter over hurdles at this ﬁxture in 2020, Mighty Thunder went one better when running out a wide-margin winner of this valuable race 12 months ago. Bids for a repeat today having also tasted success in Scotland’s richest and most prestigious jumps race, the Scottish Grand National at Ayr, last April. Another bold display in this race could tee him up for a crack at the Aintree Grand National, a race his trainer Lucinda Russell memorably won in 2017 with One For Arthur.

THE JOCKEYS BRIAN HUGHES The winning-most rider in Musselburgh’s history with 110 winners – a staggering 43 more than the now-retired Tony Dobbin. Co Armagh-born Brian won his ﬁrst jump jockeys’ championship in 2019-2020 and is miles clear of Sam Twiston-Davies in the race to reclaim the title he relinquished to Harry Skelton last season. Brian has three chances to add to his tally today – Lyrical Genius (1.29), Fiveandtwenty (2.40) and Chuvelo (3.10).

DANNY MCMENAMIN The reigning champion conditional jockey, ﬂame-haired McMenamin is one of the rising stars of the weighing room. Originally from Co Down in Northern Ireland, but now based with the powerful Cumbria yard of Nicky Richards, 21-year-old McMenamin has struck up an excellent partnership with Champion Hurdle-bound Tommy’s Oscar, winner of the Hogmaneigh Hurdle here at Musselburgh on New Year’s Day. Danny has three rides this afternoon – Pay The Piper (12.57), Diocletian (2.40) and outsider Saltmarket (3.10).

FRODON’S SUCCESS IN THIS RACE FIVE YEARS AGO WAS A STEPPING STONE TO THE TOP FOR ONE OF JUMP RACING’S MOST POPULAR HORSES OF RECENT TIMES. He had already announced himself as a star of the future by winning Cheltenham’s Caspian Caviar Gold Cup two months earlier – an extraordinary feat for a four-year-old. And his rise up the chasing ladder continued apace here, romping to a nine-length victory to kick-start a sensational Sunday treble for his jockey Sam Twiston-Davies. However, it’s since hooking up with his now regular rider Bryony Frost that Frodon has galloped his way into the hearts of racing fans and the record books. Together, Frost and Frodon have racked up TEN emotional wins, including Cheltenham’s Grade 1 Ryanair Chase, the Cotswold Chase and a second Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, Aintree’s Old Roan Chase and the Grade 1 Champion Chase at Down Royal in Northern Ireland. But it was at Kempton on Boxing Day 2020 that this dynamic duo enjoyed their finest hours so far, as Frodon’s 20-1 triumph in the King George VI Chase saw Frost create two pieces of history – as the first female jockey to lift that Grade 1 prize; and with a victory which also saw her overtake Scotland’s Lucy Alexander as the winningmost female jump jockey in Britain. In contrast to Frodon, Kalahari King, who won the very first running of this race back in 2009, was a Festival nearly horse. Five years in a row he rocked up at the greatest show on turf – and four times he ran his heart out without quite being able to get his head in front. Of all those near-misses, none was more agonising for Ferdy Murphy, his late trainer, and jockey Graham Lee than a short-head defeat in the 2009 Arkle. Kalahari King had gone south as one of the north’s best hopes for Festival week after displaying an eye-catching turn of foot to beat Astarador here at Musselburgh. Making up ground hand over fist from Cheltenham’s second-last fence, it seemed inevitable that his surging run would carry him by Forpadydeplasterer inside the final furlong. Yet try as Kalahari King might, his Irish rival wasn’t for passing. He’d get his day in the sun at Aintree the following month, sauntering to Grade 1 glory in the Maghull Novices’ Chase at the Grand National meeting. But Cheltenham success remained frustratingly elusive – Kalahari King finished third to Big Zeb in the 2010 Champion Chase and second to Albertas Run in the 2011 Ryanair Chase. The same could not be said for Divers, also trained by Murphy and winner of this race in 2011. While not as talented as Kalahari King, he did notch a cherished Festival triumph on his very next start, beating 19 rivals in the inaugural running of the Centenary Novices’ Handicap Chase. SEEYOUATMIDNIGHT’S EMERGENCE AS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED SCOTTISH HORSES OF RECENT TIMES BEGAN WITH VICTORY IN THIS RACE IN 2013. Bought by Berwickshire trainer Sandy Thomson and wife, Quona, after he’d won a point-to-point in Ireland, Seeyouatmidnight was a 66-1 winner on his hurdles debut at Hexham a few weeks earlier. Dismissed by bookies and punters alike for his next race here, Seeyouatmidnight again defied the odds as he thrashed Racing Pulse by nine lengths as the 22-1 outsider in a field of five. His biggest success over hurdles came less than a fortnight later in the Grade 2 Rendelsham Hurdle at Haydock, but fences were always going to bring out the best in Seeyouatmidnight. So it proved, as wins in Kelso’s Paris Pike Chase and the Grade 2 Dipper at Cheltenham raised hopes he could provide Scotland with a rare Festival success in the RSA Chase. But with the drying ground having turned against him, Seeyouatmidnight failed to fire and trailed in a wellbeaten seventh to Blaklion – the horse he’d beaten into second place in the Dipper. His next two races, albeit more than six months apart, showcased Seeyouatmidnight’s abundant talent, athleticism and versatility perhaps more than any other. Only a month after Cheltenham, Thomson sweetened him up sufficiently to run a fine third in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr. Turning into the home straight, it looked likely that he’d follow in the giant hoofprints of Merigo as a cherished home winner of Scotland’s richest jumps race, only to be overhauled by Vicente and Alvorado late in the piece. Then at Carlisle that October, he dished out a 12-length thumping to the high-class Bristol De Mai – a subsequent three-time winner of Haydock’s Grade 1 Betfair Chase – over a much shorter trip of two-and-a-half miles. Injury became a constant companion for Seeyouatmidnight thereafter and he was retired some months after finishing 11th to Tiger Roll in the 2018 Grand National. Yet, remarkably, he returned to the track two years later, winning at Carlisle in March 2020. And he bowed out for good after an emotional victory in the Veterans’ Chase Series final at Sandown in January 2021, where he was given a fine front-running by another comeback kid, Galashiels-born Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania, who made his own shock return to racing in October 2019 following five years away from the sport. Threeunderthrufive was an apt winner of this race 12 months ago, given the nine-hole Musselburgh Links golf course, which is situated in the middle of the racetrack, hosted The Open six times in the 1870s and 1880s. Owner Max McNeill named the seven-year-old after his father Ted, a former professional golfer who was the early leader of the 1951 Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Ted got off to a flying start at his home course and was three under par through the first five holes, only to slip back with rounds of 75 and 80 to miss the halfway cut. Threeunderthrufive has won nine of his 12 career races to date, including each of his last four over fences. He is expected to be a major player in either the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Chase or the Grade 2 National Hunt Chase at next month’s Festival. Other notable horses to have run in this race are O O Seven and Fagan, who went head-to-head in 2016. The former, trained by one of Scottish Festival Trials’ most loyal supporters Nicky Henderson, proved himself a smart performer by finishing second in a Grade 1 at Punchestown’s Festival later that season. As for Fagan, he was a 33-1 runner-up to Unowhatimeanharry in the Cheltenham race his owner – Ronnie Bartlett of Rooster Potatoes fame – has sponsored at the Festival since 2008. Clever Cookie (2014)

OF THE 16 HORSES TO HAVE WON THE BET365 SCOTTISH COUNTY HURDLE, ONE STANDS ABOVE THE REST. Clever Cookie was still learning his trade over timber when romping to a decisive success in 2014. That was his third Musselburgh victory in just four starts, having landed a bumper here in 2012 and then a novices’ hurdle three weeks earlier. He was ridden to all three of those wins by Hawick jockey Wilson Renwick, who, following his enforced retirement through injury in 2016, ended up swapping four legs for two wheels – and an unlikely new career as a professional road-race cyclist! He is now a jockeys’ agent. As one of a select club of jockeys to notch more than 1,000 winners over jumps, Clever Cookie’s Carnoustie-born trainer Peter Niven knows a “proper” horse when he sees one. So no one should have been surprised by what this hugely-talented gelding, who was bred by Niven’s mum Joan, would go on to achieve. Subsequently switched to the Flat, Clever Cookie reeled off three consecutive wins, the latter coming in a dead-heat for first place in a Listed race at York. He made his breakthrough as a high-class stayer by landing the Ormonde Stakes, a Group 3 at Chester, on his first start of 2015. But York was always his favourite Flat track – and it was on the Knavesmire where Clever Cookie achieved his biggest success later that summer in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup. Unlike those horses which have used Musselburgh as a springboard to Festival glory, Diego Du Charmil did the reverse in 2017. Winner of the Fred Winter Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2016, Diego Du Charmil proved in a different league here as he powered clear of Dominada to provide Somerset trainer Paul Nicholls with the first of a famous five winners on that year’s SFT weekend. Nicholls also landed this race 12 months ago with Christopher Wood, an impressive winner under his then 7lb claimer Angus Cheleda. The success of Shrewd in 2016 was a notable one for Iain Jardine, who rode a handful of winners around Musselburgh as a journeyman jockey. Now making a much bigger impact as a trainer, Jardine went to great lengths to secure Irish-based conditional Shane Shortall to claim 5lbs off Shrewd’s back. Flying the former Galway Plate-winning rider over on the morning of the race proved an inspired move, as Shortall displayed a cool head to produce Shrewd to challenge at the final flight and then surge clear of Vendor on the run-in. Despite its brief history, however, the victory of Mighty Thunder 12 months ago has helped to firmly establish it as a valuable target for horses with abundant stamina. Trained in Perthshire by Lucinda Russell, who won the 2017 Grand National at Aintree with One For Arthur, Mighty Thunder belied odds of 14-1 to dish out a 20-length drubbing to Borders National winner Dino Boy in a searching race where only four of the 11 runners completed the course. From Musselburgh, Mighty Thunder then finished an unlucky second in the Midlands National at Uttoxeter on his next start. But with his regular rider, Hawick’s Blair Campbell, sidelined by a hand injury, Tom Scudamore was the lucky man who then stood in to steer Mighty Thunder to a rousing and emotional victory for the hugely patriotic Russell in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr last April. A dramatic finish in 2018 saw Full Jack emerge victorious, albeit in fortuitous circumstances. Looking Well looked set to carry off the top prize when he surged into the lead at the second-last fence. But in an explicable incident, which jockey Ryan Day could not have predicted, Looking Well jinked badly to his left approaching the final fence, sending his luckless rider crashing to the turf. That left Full Jack to stroll to a clear-cut and popular success for his Selkirk jockey Rachael McDonald, Berwickshire trainer Sandy Thomson and Haddington-based owner Ray Green. While that was to prove the final race of Full Jack’s career, it served as a springboard to Cheltenham Festival glory for the runner-up Missed Approach. Just a few weeks later, Warren Greatrex’s eight-year-old denied Irish-trained runners a famous clean sweep of victories in all seven races on Festival Thursday by repelling the late challenge of favourite Mall Dini to win the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase for amateur riders. The inaugural edition of the Edinburgh National in 2017 was won by Dancing Shadow. Trained on the outskirts of Exmoor National Park by Victor Dartnell, he made the 925-mile round trip from deepest Devon worthwhile thanks to a superb stalking ride by Noel Fehily. After sitting towards the back of the pack early on, Fehily and his mount began to creep into contention on the final circuit and then pounced halfway up the home straight to beat another far-travelled raider, the Lincolnshiretrained Gonalston Cloud, by two-and-a-half lengths. Our shuttlee buses run every 10 minutess to and from the Racecourse se car park up until un the secondd race and they restart resta after the fourth th race. The bus stop is located on thee corner of Millhill Millhi and Balcarres Place ace

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
