THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Ourr feature race of today is the third race on the card, The Betway Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase. It is run over a trip of two miles, es, four furlongs and 68 yards. This race is specifically for horses that are five and upwards and it has attracted a small but select field of four runners. The highest rated in the field is Tom George George’s KAKAMORA and Jonathan Burke gets the legg up on the seven-year-old. Third on his first chase start at Wincanton he was a beaten a long way, but the form has been een boosted by Jacamar, who has since won a Class three handicap at Kem Kempton. Current favourite is BROADWAY JOE for Nick Alexander, the bottom weight is hoping to make it four wins on the bo bounce, after he has improved markedly over fences. Now rated 10lb higher than his last win, the others will have to put in a top performance to stop this rapid improver.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H RYAN MANIA only has the one ride on Monday and has to be respected. r He takes the ride on Salvino in our second race of the day and the fact he is only coming ing for one ride is very eye-catching. Watch to see if the market speaks in his favour. BRIAN HUGHES GHES has his usual top book oof rides and needs no introduction; all of his mounts have to bee respected and he will be coming here hopin hoping to further strengthen his grip on the jockey’s championship. HENRY BROOKE has four rides on the day iincluding the favourite in our feature. He registered two placed efforts att our New Year’s Day meeting and a will be hoping to go one better.

TRAINERS TO WATCH TOM GEORGE makes the long journey North with Kakamora and Dom Bosco. The latter is a very interesting runner in the bumper and will be hoping to improve on his debut effort to take this. Also in the bumper is Holmes St Georges for Irish raider S R B Crawford. Beaten when sent off favourite last May at Ballinrobe, James Bowen has been given the task of getting this horse into the winner’s enclosure and for a shrewd yard he must be respected. LUCINDA RUSSELL has a lot of lively chances and will be disappointed if none of her nine intended runners can get their head over the line in front.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1:00 THE BETWAY HEED YOUR HUNCH CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE (GO NORTH CAB ON TARGET SERIES QUALIFIER) Our first race is a two miles and two furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. This race is specifically for Conditonal Jockeys, who’s weight is determined by winners rode.

1.30 THE BETWAY MAIDEN HURDLE (GBB RACE) The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a ﬁlly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this three miles race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

2:00 THE BETWAY NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP CHASE (GBB RACE) This is a two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice ﬁve-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2.30 THE BETWAY HANDICAP HURDLE This is a two miles handicap hurdle race four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

3.00 THE MUSSELBURGH HANDICAP CHASE) This is a three mile handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

3:30 THE BETWAY CASINO OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GBB RACE) As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

Our shuttlee buses run every 10 minutess to and from the Racecourse se car park up until un the secondd race and they restart resta after the fourth th race. The bus stop is located on thee corner of Millhill Millhi and Balcarres Place ace

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
