THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Ourr feature race of today is the fifth race on the card, The Betway “Auld Reekie” Reekie Handicap Chase. It is run over a trip of two miles, four furlongs and 68 yards. This is a race open to horses rated 0-1 0-145 and just the five runners head down to post in what looks a cracking contest to kick start the New Year. The partn partnership of Bryony Frost and Paul Nicholls currently ntly head the market with AMOUR DE NUIT and it is interesting that Nicho Nicholls has brought a few horses here today. It iss always hard to rule out the champion jockey Brian Hughes, especially when teaming up with Donald McCain and they arrive with course and distance winner Gaelik Coast.The bang in-form GOLD D DES BOIS contuines to hit the frame, so coud he break his curse of second places today?

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H Like normal, BRIAN HUGHES has some excellent chances throu hroughout the day here and he usually gets at least one winner on the day. His main chance on the day looks to be b in the opener where he hops in the saddle of Collingham, a winner over course ourse and distance on debut. debut TOM MIDGLEY gets an excellent opportunity on the improving ving Tommy’s Oscar, who’s 7lb claim could co come in very handy, and this his only ride on the card card. BR BRYONY FROST is a jockey always ays worth a second look in the market and she could be one to keep an eye on here.

TRAINERS TO WATCH DONALD MCCAIN has continued in good form and he heads into the day opperating at a 21% strike rate for the season. Teaming up with usual suspect Brian Hughes, it wouild be no surprise to see them bag a couple of winner today. PAUL NICHOLLS always plays a strong hand no matter what racecourse he heads too and today should be no different, with horses declared to run in the 12.30, 1.05 and 2.50. LUCINDA RUSSELL has a 19% strike rate over the last 14 days so is another trainer too be feared again today.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:30 THE BETWAY FIRST FOOT JUVENILE HURDLE (GO NORTH GREY BOMBER SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) Juvenile races are designed solely for three/four-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this one mile and seven and a half furlongs hurdle race is allotted 10st 12lb (fillies 10st 5lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 6lb for a Class 4 or 5 hurdle race or 10lb for a Class 1 to 3 hurdle race victory.

1.05 THE BETWAY NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE (GBB RACE) Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases. This race is also a handicap for horses rated from 0-110.

1:40 THE BETWAY HAIR OF THE DOG HANDICAP HURDLE This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2.10 THE BETWAY HOGMANEIGH HANDICAP HURDLE (GBB RACE) This is a one mile and seven and a furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

2.50 THE BETWAY ‘AULD REEKIE’ HANDICAP CHASE (GBB RACE) This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

3:25 THE PLAY 4 TO WIN AT BETWAY HANDICAP HURDLE (GO NORTH BRINDISI BREEZE SERIES QUALIFIER) The last race on the card is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

SHUTTLE E BUS

Our shuttlee buses run every 10 minutess to and from the Racecourse se car park up until un the secondd race and they restart restar after the fourth th race. The bus stop is located on thee corner of Millhill Millhi and Balcarres Place lace

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground.

This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.

ATM

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed.

There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
