THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Ourr feature race of today is the third race on the card. The Watch On Racing Tv Novices’ Handicap Chase is run over a trip of two wo miles, four furlongs and 68 yards. This is a race open to horses rat rated 0-120 and six runners head down to post for a chance to take home the top prize pool on offer. Right at the top of tthe market sees leading champion jockey, Brian Hughes, with a great chance to add another winner to his impressive tally ta onboard hat-trick seeking BROADWAY JOE.. Donald McCain is always hard to oppose here and has an excellent strike rate so AWAY AT DAWN has every chance JOE again but looks fustrating to back at times, with several second place ﬁnishes. JUST CALL ME AL seemed much improved over fences last time out at Carlisle,ﬁnishing second, d, and it could prove ninth time t lucky to break his duck over fences.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES has been the man with a plan once again this season and rides four favourites on the day. River Walk in the opener is could prove key to hiss success on the day d after he scored impressively in a bumper on debut at Carlisle. He might be the new kid on the block, bu but 10lb claimer CONNOR McCAIN has two excellent chances on the card with Gemologist and Emirat De Cantana, and seems to have earnt the trust for Lucinda Russell’s stable. SEAN QUINLAN also has a few good chances and he is a rider to always keep a close eye on.

TRAINERS TO WATCH DONALD MCCAIN has continued in good form and he heads into the day opperating at a 23% strike rate for the season. Teaming up with usual suspect Brian Hughes, it wouild be no surprise to see them bag a couple of winner today. LUCINDA RUSSELL had an impressive winner at Cheltenham not too long ago and has hit form recently. She has an excellent chance with Rapid Raider in the 2.45 who bids to complete his hat-trick off a 7lb higher mark. Despite doing most of his work on the ﬂat, IAIN JARDINE declares a few here that could be worth a market check.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:15 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV MAIDEN HURDLE (GBB RACE) The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a ﬁlly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and four furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

12.45 THE HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY KIRSTY MCINTOSH MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE This is a one mile and seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

1:15 THE WATCH ON RACING TV NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE (GBB RACE) This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

1.45 THE RACING TV PROFITS RETURNED TO RACING CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.15 THE BET AT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP HURDLE (GO NORTH CAB ON TARGET SERIES QUALIFIER) This two miles, four furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 105. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose ofﬁcial rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

2:45 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW HANDICAP CHASE The penultimate race this afternoon is a three miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-old and upwards which have been ofﬁcially rated 0-105. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

3.15 THE VISIT RACINGTV.COM OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CATEGORY 1 ELIMINATION) (GO NORTH JODAMI SERIES QUALIFIER) As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over one mile and seven and a half furlongs.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical Meedical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erec erected around a fallen horse.
