The Scottish Racing Academy (SRA) was formed in 2019 to enhance horseracing education and training provision in Scotland and the north of England. Its vision is to nurture sustainable talent to meet the needs of world class racecourses and trainers. Today, we are raising funds for The Injured Jockeys Fund. A massive thank you to everyone who has come along sporting their Christmas Jumpers. Our Racecourse staff are also playing their part – sporting their own festive knitwear. The Scottish Racing Academy simulator (a mechanical jockey training aid) is located on our Pommery Lawn, and they will be taking a collection for the Injured Jockey Fund which was founded in 1964 to support jockeys who are injured, unable to ride or in need of assistance. Please feel free to head over and test your potential to be a jockey. They will be keeping scores throughout the day and there will be a prize for the winner. Let’s have a bit of fun! THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Ourr feature race of today is the third race on the card. The Racing TV Handica Handicap Hurdle is run over a trip of almost two miles es (one mile, seven furlongs and 124 yards). This is a race open to horses ho rated 0-140 and has attracted six runners for or the contest. Top weight is the four-year-old FIRST IMPRESSION for f John Quinn and Tom O’Brien. He ran an excellent cellent race on his last time out at Wetherby, ﬁnishing ﬁve lengths in front f of the Nicky Richards trained Caius Marcius, but was 12lb lighter here. Leading course trainer Donald McCain ssaddles MINELLA PLUS who has enjoyed two consecutive wins; most recently at Catterick under top weight. WIth M McCain in great form, he’s the one to keep an eye out for.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES has been the man to watch for some time now, ow, and rides second-favourite Minella Plus in the feature race of the day. The stable arrives in excellent ent form, with Hughes Hug being on the horse for its last two victories. The ﬁrst of the two at this course, urse, and the pair ﬁnished second sec twice respectively in two outings prior. SEAN QUINLAN could be hot on his heels in this race, as he rirides Spiritofthenorth for Kevin Ryan on his course debut. AIDAN COLEMAN is another who could be up the there, and rides Auditoria in the feature race for Olly Murphy.

TRAINERS TO WATCH DONALD MCCAIN has enjoyed a ﬂying start to this season and his horses have been operating at a 67% strike rate. He has horses in the 12:45, 1:15 and 3.15 and there’s no doubt he will get a few more winners to add to his portfolio this season. Neil Alexander is another one to watch, as he has been operating a 43% strike rate this season. He saddles horses in the 2.15, 2.45 and 3.15 today. Lucinda Russell is next best, having operated a 22% strike rate this season. She saddles two runners in the ﬁrst and last races this meeting, but has Donald McCain’s FINISK RIVER to contend with in the latter.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:15 THE BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF BLACKFORD HILL ‘NATIONAL HUNT’ NOVICES’ HURDLE (CLASS 4) (QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged between four and six years old who have not ran in a ﬂat race and have not won more than two hurdle races.

12.45 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW INTRODUCTORY JUVENILE HURDLE (CLASS 2) (GO NORTH GREY BOMBER SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) An Introductory Hurdle is a race which is restricted to horses which have not previously run in more than one hurdle race. This particular two mile contest is reserved for juvenile three-year-olds. The weights are initially set at 10st 12lb for each runner with ﬁllies and mares receiving a 7lb allowance from their male rivals. However, any runner that was successful on their ﬁrst start will be allocated with a 5lb penalty.

1:15 THE VISIT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3) This is a one mile, seven furlongs and 124 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. This race is additionally open to horses rated 141 and 142. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 140 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135.

1.45 THE SCOTTISH RACING ACADEMY CHRISTMAS JUMPER NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 5) This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being unpenalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.15 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3) (CHALLENGER STAYERS’ HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two miles, seven furlongs and 180 yards handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. This race is additionally open to horses rated 136 and 137. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

2:45 THE HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY JOHN BALLOCH HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 4) (GO NORTH RED RUM SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two miles, seven furlongs and 170 yards handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. This race is also open to horses rated 111 and 112. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

3.15 THE GET DAILY TIPS AT RACINGTV.COM CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 4) This two miles, three furlongs and 171 yards handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. This race is additionally open to horses rated 121 and 122. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose ofﬁcial rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed ointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centree of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for thee welfare of the Jockeys. Jockeys The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially cially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receivingg veterinary attention attentio on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy acy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worstt if you see screens screen erected around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
