THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Ourr feature race of today is the penultimate race on the card. The Lothians Ra Racing Syndicate Handicap Chase is run over thee marathon trip of three miles and six furlongs. A race for horses rate rated between 0-140, it has attracted ﬁve runners onn what looks to be good racing ground after the recent rain we’ve hhad. Top weight is the eight-year-old THE FERRYY MASTER for Sandy Thomson and Ryan Mania. He ran an excellent race in the Scottish Grand National and proved roved he stays the marathon trip, which is a big plus. Closest to him in the weights is DO NOT DISTURB, the gelding is looking to complete a four-timer, but this will be his ﬁrst time over the tri trip and despite shaping like he will stay, he still has it all to prove. Brian Hughes is on GENERATOR RATOR CITY and off bottom botto weight he cannot be underestimated.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES is always the man to watch but he could have his w work cut out today. CRAIG NICHOL, RYAN MANIA and excellent claimer THEO GILLARD all have a fantastic book of rides. RYAN MANIA rides for three different trainers and is currently on the market ket favourite in our feature. TTHEO GILLARD is on the favourite in our ﬁrst and will be lookingg to make maximum use of that 3lb claim in the th Conditional Jockeys Handicap. He will not have everything his own way, with ALAN DOYLE onboard the ssecond favourite, who has had a good start to the season, it should be a fascinating scinating watch. wa

TRAINERS TO WATCH Donald McCain has been ﬂying this season and his horses have been operating at a 29% strike rate. He has horses in the 12:50, 1:50, 2:50 and 3:50 so will be hoping he can get a few winners to continue his ﬁne start to the season. Sam England sends just the two runners, but he hasn’t had the best of starts so his two in the 2:50 and 3:20 may be best watched until the stable comes into some better form. Ian Williams makes the long journey North with Angels Landing in the 1:50 to see if he can’t take home the Juvenile Hurdle.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:50 THE JUMPS ARE BACK ON RACING TV CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE (GO NORTH TWO MILE HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) Our ﬁrst race on the card is a Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle run over two miles for four-year-old’s and upwards. It is open to all those rated between 0-120 but is also open to those rated 121 & 122. For each hurdle race won after the 23rd October 2021 a penalty of 7lb must be carried. The race itself is limited to Conditional Jockeys that are to carry a claim dependant on the number of winners ridden before October 31st, 2021.

1.20 THE ATHELSTANEFORD BIRTHPLACE OF THE SALTIRE NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. This particular race is limited to Novice Chasers and the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

1:50 THE RACING TV THANKS DEBBIE LEISHMAN JUVENILE MAIDEN HURDLE (GO NORTH JUVENILE HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-old maidens in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two miles and one furlong hurdle race is allotted 10st 12lb (ﬁllies 10st 5lb) as each horse is a Maiden there are no penalties carried.

2.20 THE GET A FREE MONTH OF RACING TV HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH TWO MILE CHASE SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.50 FREE MONTH OF JUMPS ON RACING TV HANDICAP HURDLE (GO NORTH STAYERS’ HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) This two mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose ofﬁcial rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

3.20 THE LOTHIANS RACING SYNDICATE HANDICAP CHASE The penultimate race this afternoon is a three mile and six furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated 0-140. As in all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 140 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135.

3.50 THE RACINGTV.COM/FREEMONTH MARES’ OPEN MAIDEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CATEGORY 3 ELIMINATION) (GBB RACE) As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to Filles and Mares aged four, five and six and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed ointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centree of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for thee welfare of the Jockeys. Jockeys The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially cially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receivingg veterinary attention attentio on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy acy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worstt if you see screens screen erected around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.

Two viewing ramps for guests in wheelchairs only are situated in front of the main Grandstand. We have disabled access toilets in the Old Weighing Room Bistro, Rockavon Bar, Pinkie Bar & the Links Pavilion Entrance.
