THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Ourr feature race of the Jumps Season Opener is the Racing TV Proﬁts Returne Returned To Racing Handicap at 3.48, which sees 6 horses line-up for the contest. There looks to be some nice prospects iin the race as Return Ticket improved to win at Wetherby etherby last time out with Brian Hughes on board. Another interesting interestin prospect comes in the form of the Iain Jardine ne trained Gold Des Boi, who has enjoyed a series of consecutive secondssecond improving from a seventh at Tipperary inn July. The booking of Connor Farrell for the third time this season sparks further fur room for improvement, and the step up in trip should leave room for improvement also also.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H Brian Hughes has enjoyed a 22% strike rate over the last 144 day days, and saddles a horse in every race this afternoon. His rides here this afternoon include Return urn Ticket in the fe feature Handicap and Morraman in the 2.03 Hurdle. Craig Nichol is the next best st one to Hughes, having had a strike rate of 14% over the last 14 days. His rides include nine-year-old Slanelough for the second time tthis season, having ﬁnished third at Carlisle in October. Danny McMenamin is the next best one, with a str strike rate of 12% over the last 14 days; he rides Cedar Hill in the 2.38 and The he King Of May in the feature rrace- both for the ﬁrst time.

TRAINERS TO WATCH Top spot of the Edinburgh Gin Trainers’ Championship for the 2021 season was claimed by Keith Dalgleish with eleven wins and eighteen Best Turned Out awards. He has three chances here today, that come in the form of Arthur’s Seat (1.00), Taxmeifyoucan (2.03) and Le Magniﬁque (3.13). Donald McCain is another one to watch, after his 36% strike rate over the last fourteen days. He saddles ﬁve prospects this afternoon; Minella Plus (1.00), Armattiekan (1.30), Morraman (2.03), Gaelik Coast (2.38) and Constancio (3.13).

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.00 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW EBF ‘NATIONAL HUNT’ NOVICES’ HURDLE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile and four furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for four, ﬁve and six-year-olds which have not won more than two hurdle races.

1.30 THE RACING TV GO NORTH HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH MIDDLE DISTANCE CHASE SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two mile and four furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 110.

2.03 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP HURDLE This is a two mile and seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

2.38 THE VISIT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP CHASE This is a two mile and four furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

3.13 BET AT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 4) This two mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose ofﬁcial rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

3.48 THE RACING TV PROFITS RETURNED TO RACING HANDICAP CHASE The penultimate race this afternoon is a two mile and four furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been ofﬁcially rated 0-140. As in all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 140 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135.

4.23 THE WATCH ON RACING TV ‘NEWCOMERS’ NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CATEGORY 1 ELIMINATION) (GO NORTH NHF SERIES QUALIFIER) As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed ointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centree of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for thee welfare of the Jockeys. Jockeys The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially cially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receivingg veterinary attention attentio on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy acy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worstt if you see screens screen erected around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
