PLAY SMARTER
A quick-fire C&D hat-trick beckons for DELLBOY TROTTER, who has developed a fine partnership with this jockey and, given the manner of his victory 16 days ago, a 9lb rise in the weights may not be enough to anchor Tracey Leeson’s charge. Landacre Bridge rates as the main threat having filled the runner-up spot on his last couple of starts, with Good Bye another to consider on first start for Sara Ender.

J O H N M AT T H E W S MEMORIAL
The John Matthews Memorial Novices’ Handicap Chase is run in the memory of John Matthews, the former Mayor of Market Rasen who sadly passed away in February 2021. John served seven tenures as the Mayor of Market Rasen and was an extremely popular figure throughout Lincolnshire. John also served as an avid member of Market Rasen Business Initiative Group, The Mary Portas Pilot, Market Rasen Town Partnership, De Aston School Governor, Market Rasen Racecourse Liaison, and Market Rasen Station Restoration Group, as well as his council work. John and his family did a great deal for local charities during his tenures as Mayor, raising over £20,000 for causes such as the Air Ambulance, Lives, Fire Fighters, Motor Neuron Disease Association and Flights for Life. John was also a keen supporter of the racecourse and is much missed by all throughout the locality.

Third Race
CASAMARI ABBEY exceeded expectations when runner-up from out of the weights at Cartmel a week ago and, now back on his correct mark, a repeat of that effort may well suffice. Begoodtoyourself finally won a race last time but his profile is unconvincing, so Barest of Margins could be the main danger pitched into a handicap for chase debut.

GRAZIANO LEMBO MEMORIAL Graziano was a larger-thanlife character; loved by many and forgotten by none. His zest for life was insatiable and he inspired those around him to live life to the full and enjoy the precious moments. A fun loving and sociable guy, who rarely missed an opportunity to spend time with his friends and loved ones. Graziano was a great lover of sport and an avid horseracing fan. He would regularly attend meets around the country and he spent many occasions enjoying the races at Market Rasen with his family, whilst obviously placing a bet or two! He rarely won big, but it was the joy and thrill of cheering on the Gee Gee’s (as he called them) that he loved. He will be smiling proudly at this opportunity to have a race dedicated to his memory.

ANNUAL BADGE HOLDER EXPERIENCE 2022 ON SALE NOW THEJOCKEYCLUB.CO.UK/MARKETRASEN
Don Noble Bookmaker – 60 Not Out It’s been 60 years since Don Noble opened his first shop at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, on July 9, 1962. Today, his son, Richard, and Richard’s son Daniel are proud to be at the helm of the business as it celebrates 60 years in business. Born in Halifax in 1910, Don moved to Hull and it was there that his interest in horse racing grew. Called up for war service Don put his hidden talent for playing the piano to good use by becoming part of an army show-group that toured the country entertaining the troops. Future radio and TV presenter Charlie Chester was once the group’s comedian. Don worked for a bookmaker after the war. Having been diagnosed with lung cancer, resulting in the removal of half a lung, his life expectancy was short so he decided to realise a long-held ambition to become a bookmaker and opened a shop in East Street, Horncastle. His wife Betty, helped him run the shop, with son Richard joining them upon leaving school the following year. The accounts for the first 10 months, from July 1962 to April 1963 reveal that after paying of winning bets, all expenses, including permit, Levy Board contributions, telephone and blower (commentary system) etc, he made a net profit of £81.00. In 1968 Richard decided to branch out, and took an opportunity to rent a former antique shop in Louth, the town that would eventually become the company’s headquarters. Before long, Don Noble’s twoshop business had doubled in number with Richard buying a shop in Winthorpe, near Skegness, followed by one in Mablethorpe.
Richard recalls, “by now father was getting a bit worried but I promised him that as long as I continued as a bookmaker, I would always trade under the name of Don Noble, and that’s a promise I’ve kept. Don Noble retired in 1976 and died in 1981. Having opened a shop in 1962 as what he perceived to be a last hurrah, he lived for another 19 years and died of a non-cancer related illness. Nowadays, the chain that bears his name operates eight shopsit was at one time 18 – in North Lincolnshire and the Midlands. In 2006 Richard acquired Manny Bernstein’s credit/telephone betting operation, and shortly after moved into the flagship building, Square Deal House, located directly opposite their previous headquarters in Aswell Street, in Louth’s town centre. Looking back, Richard observes that he wasn’t particularly looking to acquire a chain of betting shops. It was more a case of them coming his way. Since the majority of small bookmakers have now gone, we find ourselves competing with the national chains. But we believe that we offer a more varied and personal service combined with attractive offers. We also like to think that our shops are a sort of social centre where people can meet and converse with our friendly staff. The Don Noble shop in East Street, Horncastle is still trading today, and from the same premises they started from in 1962.

BROOMFIELD BURG is the most talented sort in this field and, if he settles in a first-time hood, he could have too much for Ask Paddington who, admittedly, arrives at the top of his game. The well-treated Caius Marcius is hard to rule out.

PLAY SMARTER
MORDRED is potentially thrown in on Flat form and hasn’t had many goes in this sphere, so he’s a confident choice with the assistance of Gina Andrews a major plus in a race of this nature. Pateen landed this off a 1-lb higher mark last year and shaped as if turning a corner when fourth at Aintree last time, so he also warrants consideration along with Lady Babs.
