THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Market Rasen Racecourse. A very warm welcome to Market Rasen for our first fixture of 2022, featuring seven exciting races in this friendly and picturesque setting. Our thanks goes to Matchbook for sponsoring five of today's races. The feature race this afternoon is the Alan Swinbank Mares' Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race, which is typically contested by horses with a great deal of potential, due to its Class 1 Listed status. Not only are trainers keen to target this race as a stepping stone to the top level races in spring, but it is also an important race to win in its own right, as having a Listed success against their name can make a mare a valuable breeding proposition for the future. The Alan Swinbank Mares' Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race was first run in 2018 and was named in Alan's honour after his death in 2017 at the age of 72. The trainer saddled 25 winners at Market Rasen, with an excellent 27 per cent strike rate at the course and we are grateful to his family for supporting this race. Another highly competitive race is promised in the Symphony Group Handicap Chase, a Challenger Staying Chase Series Qualifier, the final of which is staged at Haydock Park in April. We are very grateful to Symphony Group for their generous sponsorship of this race. We are operating one enclosure today, which means you have access to all open bars and restaurants across the Racecourse. I hope you will make the most of this chance to explore all the different areas, including visiting the pre-parade ring, parade ring and winner's enclosure as well as the William Hill Betting Shop, tote and on-course bookmakers. Please note that, as per government guidance, face coverings are highly recommended in all indoor spaces except when eating and drinking, while we continue to recommend checking in via the NHS COVID-19 app. QR codes remain located around the racecourse to enable you to check in should you wish to. The safety of our spectators and participants remains our utmost priority. I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck and hope that you all have a wonderful time with us here at Market Rasen. TOMMY COOPER Chairman, Market Rasen racecourse

CAPTAIN BROOMFIELD made a promising start over hurdles when second at Haydock 22 days ago, and with improvement anticipated over this slightly longer trip, he looks the one to beat in receipt of 7lb from main rival Barony Legends. Miss Wachit shaped with promise in a Southwell bumper in the spring and shouldn’t be overlooked on this switch to timber.

OPTIMISTIC BIAS was a sitting duck for the thriving Vee Dancer at Hereford, but that was his best effort over hurdles for a while as he bowled along in front in first-time blinkers. The handicapper has left the 13-y-o’s mark unchanged and he could go one better. Le Grand Lion and Florrie Knox are another couple of appealing front runners to consider in a handicap that could be a burn up.

ANGELS LANDING showed improved form in a juvenile at Ludlow last week and looks on a favourable mark now tackling handicap company for the first time in this sphere. PLAY SMARTER

NELL’S BELLS powered away in the style of a quality mare at Carlisle and there could well be more to come, so she gets the nod ahead of Flirtatious Girl who, although the only winner at this level, has a penalty and an absence to defy. Mullenbeg, who bolted up on her Rules debut at Ludlow recently, also comes into the reckoning.

ALAN SWINBANK MARES’ STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE

We are delighted to be staging the fifth running of the Listed Alan Swinbank Mares’ Bumper as our feature race this afternoon and warmly welcome Alan’s family and friends who have supported the race. In a training career lasting well over 30 years Alan Swinbank conquered the world, but he liked nothing more than this journeys to Lincolnshire where his record at Market Rasen was second to none. Alan’s first winner as a licensed trainer was The Froddler in a Hunter Chase at Sedgefield in 1982 but it is for his exploits with globetrotting Collier Hill that he hit the headlines, winning 15 races in 8 countries including the Irish St Leger and high profile races in Canada and Hong Kong. He enjoyed great success domestically as well - with his near 800 winners including horses like Turbo Linn and Alfie Flitts. Of all Alan’s many qualities as a trainer his eye for a horse was one of the most outstanding - he had 25 winners here and many of those were in a Bumper - sending into battle a young horse he had nurtured. And there have been few more emotional winners here than just days after he died when Alan’s partner Sally and his family were here to see Brecon Hill win the Bumper - so its more than fitting a race in his honour should be for the type of horse at which he excelled.
