WELCOME Ludlow Race Club Ltd Registered Office: Ludlow Racecourse Bromfield Ludlow Shropshire SY8 2BT Tel: 01584 856221
Welcome back to racing at Ludlow Racecourse for 2026. We would like to thank our sponsors today; Pointing Pointers and CLH Premier Print! We hope that they have an enjoyable day and back a few winners! We sadly lost our first meeting of 2026 with frost being the cause which was frustrating having had such a great Tanners Christmas Meeting, with a large crowd and plenty of runners. Today we have plenty of runners in some competitive races which is music to our ears. I just hope the weather holds out as I know there is rain forecast in places. We have got a busy February with three meetings so let’s hope that we can maintain good field sizes as we venture into the busy period. Please mark your calendars for our Behind The Scenes Raceday on Wednesday 18th February, this is a chance to go behind the scenes of racing here at Ludlow along with lots of activities for Children and families during the February Half Term. We have space available in our Ludlow Racecourse Racing Club with our horse Windsor Blue, in training with Henry Daly. The club have enjoyed a fun season, and look to have an exciting year ahead. If you would like more information or to sign up, please visit the office. I’m hoping that you have a good days racing and that we can welcome you back again very soon Best Regards Simon Sherwood (Managing Director/Clerk of the Course)

HOW TO BET WITH AN ON-COURSE BOOKMAKER 1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to offer the correct stake money for your wager. 2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet. 3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings. 4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or a place. 5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights.
EACH WAY BETTING The RCA and the bookmaking association have agreed the following terms for all bookmakers offering each way betting on course. NON-HANDICAPS 5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8+ runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 HANDICAPS 5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8 - 11 runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 12 - 15 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3 16+ runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3,4 All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g.£1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

L U K E WAT S O N 08/08/ 1992 - 13/ 11/2018
Family and friends were due to gather for a sixth and final time at Ludlow last week to remember Luke and raise a glass in his memory. Sadly, the weather put paid to that, and racing was abandoned. If you have attended that meeting over the last few years, you may recall reading that Luke started in racing in 2009. Initially he was in Epsom with Jim Boyle, the late John Akehurst and Simon Dow, before moving to the Cotswolds where he worked for Paul Webber, Alax Hales and Richard Phillips. Luke left racing in the summer of 2018 and returned home to Yorkshire to pursue a career elsewhere. However, despite his outgoing happy go lucky persona, Luke had been struggling with his mental health for a number of years and sadly in November of that year at the age of just 26 Luke took his own life. Suicide is no longer the taboo subject it was in the past, but the statistics are still frightening. Men account for 75 per cent of all suicides in the UK, where it is also the leading cause of death for men under the age of 50. During 2024 there were a total of 6,894 suicides registered across England, Scotland and Wales. There are several organisations who offer help and support to people struggling with their mental health, from helplines and online support to groups and individual meetings. These include the Samaritans, Anxiety UK, CALM, MIND, Andy’s Man Club and James’ Place. If you are struggling, or you know someone who is, then these organisations can help and if by someone contacting one of them it means one less family going through what ours has, then that can only be a good thing. We have received nothing but love and support from people in racing since Luke died. Many of whom knew Luke, but some did not, and that speaks volumes for the racing community as a whole. Our family are incredibly grateful to each and every single one of these people, far too many to mention all by name. However, we would particularly like to thank David Fitzgerald, Richard Phillips, Alex Hales and Luke’s former work mates and many of these have stayed in touch with us. Finally, after sponsoring a race in Luke’s memory here since 2020 we must also thank everyone at Ludlow who have looked after us and made us feel so welcome. These include Simon Sherwood, Robert Bellamy and especially Diane Thomas. Thank you all most sincerely, The Watson Family.

VIEWING ON COURSE
Would all patrons please note that while any race is in progress no person is allowed on the course except Racecourse Ground Staff and First Aid Attendants. All other persons must stay behind the running rails. THIS INCLUDES OWNERS, TRAINERS, JOCKEYS, PRESS and PHOTOGRAPHERS.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
PUBLIC EVACUATION PROCEDURE PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
In the unlikely event that the racecourse buildings need to be evacuated please read the following information for your own safety. The Racecourse Management will only take such action if an emergency situation arises such as a FIRE or BOMB THREAT and all decisions taken will place public safety as a priority. If an evacuation is necessary the following announcement will be made over the PA system: “THIS IS A SECURITY MESSAGE. IT IS NECESSARY FOR ALL PERSONS TO LEAVE THE RACECOURSE BUILDINGS AND WALK TO THE GOLF COURSE IN THE CENTRE OF THE COURSE”. Unless otherwise instructed ALL members of the public will be evacuated to this area. There will be NO access to either the Annual Members or Owners & Trainers Car Parks. No vehicles will be allowed to leave the site until allowed by the Police so as to keep surrounding roads clear for Emergency vehicles. In the event that the evacuation is cancelled or it is safe for the public to return a further announcement will be made. At all times the Management and Staff will try and keep you informed.
