I would like to thank our today's sponsors. Plush Flush, Flowfit Ltd, and a happy birthday to George Rickards. Your support is greatly appreciated.

The continued wet winter has been advantageous for Ludlow Racecourse as we attract extra runners in search of better ground, due to the free draining soil we have here. We are similar to Doncaster and Musselburgh in soil type but even more recently this year, those tracks, like us, are struggling to not have the description of soft or heavy in the going. Trainers are desperately wanting better going; hence the number of runners has reduced recently. Hopefully, as soon as it warms up the grass will start to grow, and the course will repair itself and get back to the condition we take pride in. The one bonus this season is the fact we have not used the irrigation once and that goes back to October. A first since we have had irrigation.

Let’s hope the “Affordability” Debate in Government on Monday opens the eyes of the Minister to the potential impact his Act could have on racing.

I hope you have a good day's racing. And for those that are going to Cheltenham, good luck

HOW TO BET WITH AN ON-COURSE BOOKMAKER

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to offer the correct stake money for your wager.

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or a place

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g.£1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

HOW TO READ THE RACECARD

FORBRA GOLD CUP FACTFILE

• The first time the FORBRA GOLD CUP took place was 1956 (Thursday, March 1st). The race had been “frozen off” in 1955, scheduled to have been the inaugural running. The 1956 event was won by 9-2 favourite COTTAGE LACE, both trained & ridden by BOB TURNELL. No other person has both trained AND ridden the winner in 68 years.

• SIX winners have been trained by people named WILLIAMSDAI, JANE, & EVAN and VENETIA (both twice)

• Most successful trainer in the race has been TIM FORSTER with FIVE wins.

• Shortest-priced winner to date was LAUDERDALE LAD (6-4 ON) in 1991.

• Longest-priced winner:- PIMBERLEY PLACE (25-1 in 1998).

• It has been abandoned 11 times, through a combination of frost, snow, waterlogging and FOOT & MOUTH.

• Seven BRITISH champion jump jockeys have ridden the winner

• No FORBRA winner has gone on to capture the AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL.

• As well as twice saddling the winner, VENETIA WILLIAMS also played a part in two other victories, as assistant to trainer JOHN EDWARDS.

• TOM RIMELL’S son FRED won it only once, with MICKLEY SEABRIGHT in 1976, ridden by amateur Peter Brookshaw.

• Local handler HENRY DALY achieved a long-held ambition to win the race in 2020, with HEAD TO THE STARS, who returned to land the prize again 12 months later!

• The saddle used by TIM HAMEY on FORBRA 92 years ago is on show here today, housed in a glass case, having been bought at auction by SIMON PARSONAGE, great grandson of WILLIAM PARSONAGE and sponsor of today’s race through FLOWFIT.

• Twelve victorious “FORBRA” jockeys have also partnered an AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL winner.

• No SCOTTISH stable has ever won the race.

• OLIVER SHERWOOD, retired elder brother of LUDLOW clerk of the course SIMON, has enjoyed two “FORBRA” wins as a trainer this century.

Race Summary:

ARIZONA CARDINAL’s overall profile hints at consistency issues but, given the manner of his victory at Leicester last month, Stuart Edmunds’ 8-y-o is fancied to make light of a 5lb rise and record a fourth success over the larger obstacles. Duke of Deception kept mistakes to a minimum back over fences when runner-up at Aintree on Boxing Day, so he heads up the opposition, with Midnight Mary and One True King taken to fight out minor honours.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PUBLIC EVACUATION PROCEDURE PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

In the unlikely event that the racecourse buildings need to be evacuated please read the following information for your own safety. The Racecourse Management will only take such action if an emergency situation arises such as a FIRE or BOMB THREAT and all decisions taken will place public safety as a priority. If an evacuation is necessary the following announcement will be made over the PA system:
