WELCOME Ludlow Race Club Ltd Registered Office: Ludlow Racecourse Bromfield Ludlow Shropshire SY8 2BT Tel: 01584 856221

Happy New Year from all of us at Ludlow Racecourse. I would like to thank all the sponsors today. Vobe Electrics who do a wonderful job managing our electrics, which can be challenging, Plyvine Caterers who excel in the culinary experience at the course, Simply Delicious and the Watson family. It continues to rain! 75mm since Boxing Day, causing a lot of challenges to racecourses all over the country. Not only for the racehorses and ground staff, but for the veterinary and medical team to comply with BHA rules re access to the horses and jockeys during a race. Ludlow Racecourse access to the track is more challenging than most as we do not have an inner road. Apologies for those that had problems exiting the Christmas Meeting. The Railway Crossing Barriers broke down after the last race, so nullifying the main exit for the traffic. It has never happened before but typically a first on one of our busiest meetings. If you are interested in becoming a Ludlow Racecourse Member with all the advantages that go with that, please apply now as there are only a few places left. Hope you all have a great days racing and look forward to seeing you during the 2024 season. Simon Sherwood (Managing Director/Clerk of the Course)

HOW TO BET WITH AN ON-COURSE BOOKMAKER 1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to offer the correct stake money for your wager. 2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet. 3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings. 4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or a place. 5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights.

EACH WAY BETTING The RCA and the bookmaking association have agreed the following terms for all bookmakers offering each way betting on course. NON-HANDICAPS 5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8+ runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 HANDICAPS 5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8 - 11 runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 12 - 15 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3 16+ runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3,4 All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g.£1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

FAIRWAY CAFE Sometimes, you just need a quick snack or perhaps you fancy a full English breakfast roll?! Whatever it is, the Fairway Cafe is sure to have it. This Cafe is situated at the side of the Windsor Marquee and is more of a low-key affair. There are no frills here, just good food and a fully stocked, licensed bar. L U K E WAT S O N 08/08/ 1992 - 13/ 11/2018

Family and friends are gathering today at Ludlow for a fourth time to remember Luke and raise a glass in his memory. Starting with Jim Boyle in Epsom in 2009, Luke went on to work for the late John Akehurst and then Simon Dow, both also in Epsom. It was Simon who suggested Luke’s future may lie in National Hunt Racing so a move to Paul Webber in the Cotswolds was arranged. It was Paul who gave Luke his first opportunity as a Conditional Jockey, and he went on to work for Alex Hales for whom he had his final ride on this card in 2016 and finally Richard Phillips. Luke left racing in the summer of 2018 and returned home to Yorkshire to pursue a career elsewhere. However, despite his happy go lucky attitude, an outgoing and gregarious persona and unbeknown to us, he had been struggling with his mental health for a few years and sadly in November that year at the age of just 26, Luke took his own life. Since then, we as a family have received nothing but love and support from the Racing Community. That has included Alex and Richard, together with Racecourse Commentator and loyal friend of Luke’s David Fitzgerald, sponsoring a race in Luke’s memory for the first time on this card in 2020. Richard also now holds his annual Charity Cricket Match, the “Adlestrop Ashes” and a match in which Luke himself played, in memory of Luke and Racing Welfare are one of the charities supported on the day. Alex, David and Paul Webber also help by donating very generous auction and raffle prizes on the day. As a family we feel that sponsoring a race in Luke’s memory is just one small way we can repay the kindness and support we have received from the racing community over the last five years and allows us the opportunity to give something back to the sport that gave Luke so much fun and happiness.

We aim to deal quickly and humanely with injured horses and to maintain the highest quality of veterinary care. We have three Equine Veterinary Surgeons in attendance at all meetings who are responsible for the welfare of all horses in action. One Veterinary Surgeon follows the race in the centre of the course and can attend a horse with the same response time as the Paramedic teams responsible for the jockeys. It is our policy to erect screens around any injured horse requiring Veterinary attention on the racecourse. This is designed to provide privacy for the Veterinary Surgeons, the patient and connections. Please do not assume the worst.

VIEWING ON COURSE

Would all patrons please note that while any race is in progress no person is allowed on the course except Racecourse Ground Staff and First Aid Attendants. All other persons must stay behind the running rails. THIS INCLUDES OWNERS, TRAINERS, JOCKEYS, PRESS and PHOTOGRAPHERS.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PUBLIC EVACUATION PROCEDURE PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

In the unlikely event that the racecourse buildings need to be evacuated please read the following information for your own safety. The Racecourse Management will only take such action if an emergency situation arises such as a FIRE or BOMB THREAT and all decisions taken will place public safety as a priority. If an evacuation is necessary the following announcement will be made over the PA system: “THIS IS A SECURITY MESSAGE. IT IS NECESSARY FOR ALL PERSONS TO LEAVE THE RACECOURSE BUILDINGS AND WALK TO THE GOLF COURSE IN THE CENTRE OF THE COURSE”. Unless otherwise instructed ALL members of the public will be evacuated to this area. There will be NO access to either the Annual Members or Owners & Trainers Car Parks. No vehicles will be allowed to leave the site until allowed by the Police so as to keep surrounding roads clear for Emergency vehicles. In the event that the evacuation is cancelled or it is safe for the public to return a further announcement will be made. At all times the Management and Staff will try and keep you informed. Thank you for your co-operation.
