HOW TO BET WITH AN ON-COURSE BOOKMAKER
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to offer the correct stake money for your wager.
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or a place
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g.£1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
EACH WAY BETTING
The RCA and the bookmaking association have agreed the following terms for all bookmakers offering each way betting on course.
NON-HANDICAPS
5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8+ runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 HANDICAPS
5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8 - 11 runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 12 - 15 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3 16+ runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3,4 All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only.

Family and friends of Luke are gathering today at Ludlow for the third time to remember him and raise a glass in his memory. Starting with Jim Boyle in Epsom in 2009, Luke went on to work for the late John Akehurst and then Simon Dow, both also in Epsom. It was Simon who suggested Luke’s future may lie in National Hunt Racing, so a move to Paul Webber in the Cotswolds was arranged. It was Paul who gave Luke his first opportunity as a Conditional Jockey and he went on to work for Alex Hales, for whom he had his final ride on this card in 2016, and finally Richard Phillips. Luke left racing in the summer of 2018 and returned home to Yorkshire to pursue a career elsewhere. However, despite his happy go lucky attitude and unbeknown to us, he had struggled with depression on and off for a number of years and sadly in November that year Luke took his own life. Since then, our family have received nothing but love and support from the Racing Community That has included Alex and Richard, together with Racecourse Commentator and loyal friend of Luke’s David Fitzgerald, sponsoring a race in Luke’s memory on this card in 2020
Richard also now holds his annual Charity Cricket Match, the “Adlestrop Ashes” and a match in which Luke himself played, in Luke’s memory with Racing Welfare one of the charities supported. Alex, David and Paul also contribute by donating very generous prizes for the raffle and auction that take place on the day too. Our family feel that sponsoring a race in Luke’s memory is just a small way we can give something back to the sport that brought so much happiness to Luke, and has been so supportive of us over the last four years.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
PUBLIC EVACUATION PROCEDURE PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
