HENRIETTAKNIGHT on the King George

This year marksthe twentieth anniversaryofone of themostpopular winners of theLadbrokes King George VI Chase. Best Mate wasthe first of twowinners in theracefor HenriettaKnight, whoalso trainedthe 2003 victor Edredon Bleu forthe pair’s ownerJim Lewis.

“I wasn’t actually at KemptonParkfor the2002race,”recalls Knight, who has sinceretired from training, “I went to Wincantontowatch Edredon Bleu and Terry(Biddlecombe, Knight’s husband), went to Kempton. “WeknewKemptonwasn’this idealcourse, he lovedthe Cheltenham hill, but we went to theKingGeorgefullofconfidence. AP (McCoy)wantedtomake more useofhim than in 2001 when he gotbeatenbyFlorida Pearlwho wasa much quicker horse.Hewantedtomakemoreuse of hisstamina.

“Throughout theracehefilled me with confidenceashealwayslooked like he wasgoing so easily.Icould tell FloridaPearl wasbeatturning in,sohejust needed to jump thelastfew.Hewas so quickwithhis feet at thelast, buthe always kept abit up hissleeve, that wasalwayshim.

“I used to getsonervous watchinghis races, butInever worriedabouthis jumping–you couldalwaysrelyonBest Mate to jump.Thatshows from his record, henever fell in arace. He wassucharemarkable jumper, hewas economicaland clever –hewas able to stand off or go in close, that’s whyhe neverfell.”

Best Mate rantwenty-twotimes,winningfourteen,including elevenraces overfencesand sixGrade One’s. “Hewas so easy to train,”Knightfondly remembers, “hewould walk around theyardathomeand sort of say‘look at me,IknowI’m good.’Itwas ajoy to watch.

“His followingwas like nothing I’ve known before.Hewas so lovedbythe racing fraternity;the poorpostman wouldarrive withboxesand boxesfullof fan mail.I’vekeptalot of it as it wassolovely

“Terry picked him outata pointto pointinIreland.Ithought he wasa lovely stamp of ahorse, but it was horrible heavygroundthatday and he ended up pulling up. Terryknew though, hesaid we must follow this horse, and Jimtrustedusand went to negotiateaprice. We thoughthe’dbe anicehorse butnever imagined he’d give us so manyspecialdays.”

Just twelve months later, oneof Knight’s horseswas in thewinner’s enclosurefollowing theLadbrokes King George VI Chase, this time with herinattendance too! “Noone expectedEdredonBleutowin, hewas eleven yearsold and 33-1. He hadrun in it before and just faded, butthatwas because he lovedtobe in frontand once, hewas headed that wasit. Even at home, he hateditifhe wasbesideahorsethatwas better than him.Iftheyfinished strongerthan him, he wouldcompletelythrow histoysout thepram! “Hewas aslowworkhorse at home, so we’d have to findsomething even slowerthan him then he wouldthinkhewas thekingofthe castle.Ona racecourse he wassoquickwhenhelandedfromajump, themomenthis feet touchedthe ground he wasinhis stride again. He had this incredible skill to almost notalter hisspeed overafence, hewould take off, flythrough the airand then land and be away again.Somuchofthatwas natural. “Kemptonreally suitedhim, and it wasjust greattowin theracea second time. He wasa specialhorse, towin Grade One’soverdifferent distances like that –weenjoyed that one!”

After seeing his colours lowered over fences for the first time when finishing last in theBetwayMildmay Novices’ ChaseatAintreeinApril,Bravemansgame registered astylish success on hisreturn to action in theGrade Twobet365Charlie Hall Chase atWetherby in October

With Bravemansgamealready having one courseand distanceGrade Oneinthe bag followinghis victory inthe Ladbrokes Kauto Star Novices’Chaselast year, Nicholls hopes he cannow addanother to hisCVinthe festiveshowpiece Nicholls, said: “He looks ingoodshape and we have had a great preparation with him “Hewenttothe CharlieHalland he wasprobablyready enough to run as he did but he wasn’t fully woundup. He travelled well and jumpedwell and won nicely.

“Wehave done alot with him sincethen as we want himready forhis life.Hehas had agreat preparationand looks fantastic. He hasgot plentyofconditiononhim “Heusedtogoa little bitlight on us afterChristmas butwefound outhehad problems withulcersbut we areontop of that now. “Scott(Marshall, work rider)loveshim and he is very happy withhim as well.Wehave done everythingweneed to do pretty well andwewill justkeep on tickingover.

“Hewon at Kemptonlastyearand thetrack suitshim well, aflat right-handed track. I’ve always thoughtthiswould be Bravemansgame’s target ever sincehewon the KautoStarlastyear. He hasalwaysbeen prepared forit.

“Itprobablyishis toughest test as he gonethrough hisnoviceraces and he has won hisfirst race outofnovicecompany this year.Heisnow into thebig boys league in thebiggestracethereisoverChristmas.”

Nicholls confirmed that HarryCobden would ride Bravemansgamewith SamTwistonDavies partneringHitman andBryonyFrost will continue herassociationwith Frodon

“Lorcanrode Hitman last season butSam haswon bigraces forGed (Mason)and Sir Alex(Ferguson).Harry, atthe moment, wouldn’tget off Bravemansgametoget on Hitman as he haswon those Grade Ones on himand he is very happytoridehim “Bravemansgameprobablydeservestobefavouriteashehas wonthisyearand he has wonthe KautoStararoundthe track, and he seemstobeprogressing butatthe end of theday they don’t know what pricetheyare.”

The13-time championJumptrainer expects thestepuptothree miles to bringout further improvementfromlast time out Haydock Park scorer Hitman, who is partowned by former Manchester United manager SirAlex Ferguson

He said:“Hitman is rated160 which is only four poundsbeyondBravemansgamewhich isn’ta longway.Hehas been placed in a Tingle Creek,Haldon Gold Cup and other Grade Oneraces and he is only sixyears old. “Clan(DesObeaux) wonthe King George for thefirst time as asix year oldrated 160so he is on theright sort of lines.Hewas always going to improve ashe gotstronger and better andhehas achieved alot forayoung horse.

“Itisthe unknown(goingthree miles),ofcourseitis. We knowBravemansgamegets thethree miles well at Kempton, and hehasn’tyet but hegot the trip well atHaydock theother dayand Ithink he is crying outfor this trip

“I think up to now he probably hasn’tbeen man enough orstrong enough toget the trip butheisready now.”

Frodon sprung a 20-1 surprisewhen claimingglory in theracetwo years ago and whileNichollsbelieveshewillhave to producea ‘career best’toprevail again, he also believesheisnoforlorn hope He said: “Hewon theracetwo years agobut he is notgetting anyyounger.Hewas neverright lastseason afterheran at Down Royalbut alot of ours were notright in thespring. “You have to respecthim as he is apreviouswinnerofthe race buthehas gotplenty to do against those younger lads as he is 10 goingon11but look at KautoStar-he wonitasan11yearold.”

Having only his thirdstart since Cheltenham in 2020 and his firstrun back overhurdles sincehis twoGrade 1 Novicesuccesses, Champ produced an extraordinary performancetogive Jonjo O’Neill Jnr his firstGrade 1success. It looked another high-quality renewal of the Long Walk Hurdle which saw Aintree Stayers Hurdle winner Thyme Hill head the betting, closely followedby dual-winner PaisleyParkwho bided fora hat-trick on the day. However, itwas Champthatshone brightest, and, albeit being keen heading down to SwinleyBottom on his first run sinceMarch, he kept finding under pressuretohold off the twomarket rivals.

One of the very fewraces thatWillie Mullins has abelow-par record in, Tornado Fyler gave him his firstsuccess in this prestigious race since2001when he saddled Florida Pearl.

It wasaneagerly-anticipatedcontestwith dual-winner Clan des Obeaux lining up once again, along with the distant MildmayChase winner Chantry House who wassent off favouriteonthe day. However, itwas DannyMullins who came home strongestofthe nine-strong field on Tornando Fyler.Given apatient ride, he produced asurprising sucesshereand went further clear after pinging the last to scorebynine lengths. His stablemate Asterion Forlonge looked the main danger, flying late, but overjumped and fell which sealed the deal forconnections.

HITMAN

An impressivewinner at Haydock last month, he mustenter calculations in a race thathis trainer farms wins. Stepping up to this trip forthe firsttime, this young horse is afantastic jumper and looksamain danger in the field.

BRAVEMANSGAME

Paul Nicholls pride and joythis upcoming season and he wasan emphatic winner on reappearancein the Charlie Hall. Looksthe superstar of the field and this Kempton specialist could prove tough to beat.

L’HOMME PRESSE

With the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in mind, Venetia Williams has aserious contender in L’Homme Press. Lastyear’sBrown Advisory winner always travels powerfully intohis races and will be looking to makeall, with the benefit of the soft ground in his favour

KING GEORGE VI CHASE BIG RACE TRENDS

AGE

With horses aged sevenoreight having landed eightofthe last tenrenewals, these seem thegroup to focuson. In this year’s field they have sevenofthe ninerepresentatives Therehaveonlybeensomeverytalentedindividuals, including thelikes of KautoStarand Desert Orchid whohas defied this when older, so it does look best to side withthatage group-anegativefor Hitman and Frodon

KEYRACES

TheBetfair Chase, run at Haydockatthe endofNovember hasbeenthe stand-outtrial forthisraceinrecentyears.Six of thelast tenwinners of theracehad run in Haydock’s three-mile Grade1 contest and theraceiswell-represented againin2022. Thisyear’s emphaticrunner-upEldorado Allendeservesa shot in this line up afterand Frodon always seems to find hisrhythmhereand wasthirdinthe BetfairChase.

There have only been four winning trainers of the King George in the last ten years as Nicky Henderson has won the race twice times and Colin Tizzard also has two successes to hisnameinthe past decade, withWillieMullins taking thelast spot with Tornado Flyer lastyear.

FORM &CLASS

When trying to narrowdownthe shortlistinGrade 1events, it oftenpaystosidewith provenqualityand this race is no different with allbut threeofthe last tenwinners having previously beensuccessful at Grade 1leveloverfences. Himan, RoyalPagaille and EldoradoAllen will be biddingfor that breakthroughsuccess at thehighest level in theKing George.

Thisshows that it canbedifficult to bouncebackfroma below-par efforttowin the King George, which is anegative againstthe chanceofRoyalePagaille.

It usually pays to stick with thefanciedrunnersinthe King George VI Chasebut recently, this trend seemstohavebeenshattered to pieceswithsomebig-pricedwinners Therehavebeen four winningfavourites, which is good news forsupporters of thePaulNicholl’syardasBravemansgame headsthe betting. He is followedinthe bettingbyL’Homme Press andHitman, who willbehoping to addthisprestigious race to theirCV.

CONCLUSION

With allthingsconsidered,BRAVEMANSGAME looks to hold huge claims of addinganother Grade 1tohis tally. He wasa market drifteronseasonalreappearance butjumped forfun and wonwithreal authority. He travelled allthe best anditwas clearturningfor home that he would have theraceathis mercy, withEldoradoAllen finishing afurther threeand half lengthsbehindand thepairmatch up againtoday. The seven-year-old hasalready proven he lovesitround this fasttrack, when beatingAhoySenor last year, and alleyeswill be on him todaytodeliver thegoodsonceagainfor theleadingtrainer Paul Nicholls

His main danger should be L’Homme Press, who will appreciate all the rain that has fell Like many of Venetia Williams’ horses, he acts at his best on soft ground. He will use this as a steppingstone to go on and contest the Gold Cup in March. The six-year-old Hitman looks an interesting contender too, stepping up to this trip for the first time. Nicholls also saddles 2020 winner Frodon who will need to bounce back after his third in the Betfair Chase. Envoi Allen lookedmuch better when sent back up to three miles for the second time in his career and landed the Champion Chase at Down Royal. His jumping was still sketchy, however, which could cost himinthishighlycompetitive field. Year

This is astepupinclassfor DON ALVARO but he jumps well enough to think he can cope and is taken to defy the handicapper again and completeahat-trick. West Cork acquitted himself well from higher marksthan this overhurdles and ratesanobvious threat. BalcoCoastal didn’t jump well enough on his chase debut at Newbury but therewas plenty of strength behind him in the market on thatoccasion and he could easily prove adifferent proposition with thatexperienceunder his belt.
