EXPERT VIEW

A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.

How the experts rate the horse’s chances:

Look out for Letters: C = Has won at this course D = Has won over this distance CD = Has won over this distance at this course BF = Was a beaten favourite

2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM

5. JOCKEY

Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Days since the horse last run 10. Horse’s age 11. Jockey’s weight (stone and Ibs) 12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam) 13. Horse’s owner 14. Horse’s breeder 15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB)

BETTING

— Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

— Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

PLAY SMARTER

WARRANTY made a pleasing start for Gary Moore when second at Fontwell last month and can build upon that to gain a first hurdles win here. American Gerry is another with potential to improve on his current mark, and though Sofia’s Rock won only a seller last time, he’s clearly well treated if able to get back in the groove in handicaps.

PLAY SMARTER

EARTH COMPANY was possibly unsuited by softer conditions when well held in a C&D handicap in January, but he’d been progressive prior to that and is taken to get back on track now returning to calmer waters after a break. Name In Lights confirmed previous promise when off the mark at Wincanton last time and looks the main threat.

ROCKSTAR RONNIE shaped as if needing the run after 4 months off here 25 days ago and could prove hard to pass this time, so he is taken to make it 3 from 3 over this C&D. Slate House was far from disgraced at the Cheltenham Festival and is a big threat back down in class, along with the thriving Doukarov.
