LADBROKES CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL DESERT ORCHID CHASE DAY MONDAY 27 DECEMBER 2021 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME £3.00
WELCOME
A very warm welcome to the Ladbrokes Christmas Festival, the highlight of the Kempton Park calendar. It is the third year that Ladbrokes sponsor this prestigious festival, and every year, the quality of racing never disappoints. Yesterday we enjoyed a superb day of action, with the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase topping off a thrilling afternoon. Today is the Ladbrokes Desert Orchid Chase Day, where more top-class action is promised. The special Christmas atmosphere at Kempton Park ensures the festivities continue, allowing family and friends to come together and enjoy the tremendous racing. Good luck if you are having a bet, but most importantly enjoy what promises to be a memorable day. Merry Christmas Simon Clare Group Director of Consumer Affairs (Ladbrokes & Coral)

Shishkin had some strong form to his name over hurdles in 2020, winning a Listed race at Huntingdon, before winning the Supreme at The Cheltenham Festival. This horse then made an excellent start to his chasing career when bolting up by 24-lengths around this course and has not took a wrong step since. . Backing up his chasing debut, Nicky Henserson’s in-mate made another excellent round of jumping, to storm home by 13-lengths as the odds-on favourite and is now 5-5 over fences.
So many winners of this famous race have gone on to top level glory: Shishkin, Altior, Dodging Bullets, Simonsig, Sprinter Sacre and Riverside Theatre to name but a few have all gone on to win Grade 1 races either as a novice or in subsequent seasons.

Not a strong race of its type and 2019-winner CODED MESSAGE could be the way to go. She made a pleasing return at Ascot last month and, now 2lb lower than for that last success, Ben Case’s charge should be spot on for this. DESERT ORCHID
THE LIFE STORY
With four King George VI Chase wins to his name at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, Desert Orchid was an integral part of the festive programme at the racecourse and as much a part of Christmas as tinsel, holly and mistletoe. It was, and still is, a career worth paying tribute to. In addition to his four King George wins, he was also successful in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Irish Grand National, the Whitbread Gold Cup, the Victor Chandler Chase and the Tingle Creek, which amazingly came in the same season as his Cheltenham Gold Cup victory. In truth, Desert Orchid was unique - on the day the inaugural Desert Orchid Steeple Chase was held, David Elsworth and Richard Burridge, his trainer and principal owner, were present as part of a memorial service to unveil a plaque next to the life-size statue of Dessie that stands near the parade ring. In total, the ‘people’s champion’ won 34 of his 71 starts, finished runner-up a further seven times and was third on three occasions. He collected £654,066 in prize-money in his 10 seasons on the racetrack before retiring, after which he fulfilled frequent public appearances thanks to his ‘celebrity’ status. Desert Orchid seemed to save his best for Kempton Park with seven victories from 13 starts. Four of the seven wins came in the King George and, as much a showman off the track as he was on it, even in retirement still made the annual Boxing Day trip to Kempton to parade to the packed stands. The Kempton Park story of Dessie, who was trained by Elsworth throughout his career, began with a fall in a novices’ hurdle and ended with a fall when attempting to win the King George for a fifth time. In between, it was all about success. Ironically, his first win here came on Boxing Day in a novices’ hurdle in 1983 – 11 months after his debut fall – before finishing third on his seasonal debut in October 1984 and then runner-up to Browne’s Gazette in the Christmas Hurdle on another festive visit to the course. His only visit of the 1985-86 season saw him fall in a hurdle race on the first start of his campaign, but jockey Simon Sherwood led Dessie to his biggest success here when landing the first of four King George’s in 1986. A chase victory in November 1987 was then followed by second place in the Boxing Day feature behind Nupsala. The second King George arrived in 1988 with Sherwood again on board, before Richard Dunwoody took over the following season, which brought a third King George as well as the Racing Post Chase here in February 1990. By the end of that year, an amazing fourth King George was in the bag. When the 12-year-old fell attempting to win a fifth King George in 1991, connections decided it was time to bring the curtain down on a legend’s career. The horse, clever as ever, had made the decision for his owners – it was time for a life as a celebrity.

Altior was sent off as the even money favourite for last year’s Desert Orchid Chase, as he bidded to become the third dual-winner of this contest and add to his almighty tally. However, he was taking on regular Graded performer Sceau Royal (fell at the fifth) and recent handicap winner Rouge Vif looked the main dangers . Despite all this, it was the Dan Skelton-trained Nube Negra who came out on top after a 323 day break. The gelding travelled strongly and jumped soundly towards the back of the field of six, before making his move two out and going clear. A shock winner on the day but what a powerhouse he has become.
Nicky Henderson has a good record in this race and can Shishkin maintain his unbeaten record?

KEY CONTENDERS SHISKIN Winner of the renewals of the Wayward Lad, Arkle and the Maghull last season, Shishkin is one of the most exciting horses in training. He made it a perfect 5-5 over fences last term and he comes into this race after a long lay-off and a wind op.
HHHHH
GREANETEEN Winner of the Celebration chase at Sandown when fending on Altior, Paul Nicholls knew he had a smart-type on his hands. The seven-year-old put up his best performance to date when landing the Tingle Creek in style and in with an excellent chance again .

SKY PIRATE
Taking on Graded company for the first time but looks worthy of a shot following some successes in classy handicaps. Beat Sky Pirate by sixlengths at Cheltenham and recieves weight from all of his rivals.
Winner of the 2021 Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival, Sky Pirate clearly has bags of ability. However, he will need to reverse the form on Before Midnight before thinking about the two market leaders.

Nicky Henderson’s last two winners of this Grade 2 have been Altior and Sprinter Sacre no less and he looks to have another mighty 2m chaser on his hands in SHISKIN who dazzled when going unbeaten in five runs last term and is confidently expected to return in style here. PLAY SMARTER
The Skeltons landed this with a novice last year and can do so again via JOHN LOCKE. A useful performer on the Flat, he opened his hurdles account in good style at Huntingdon and makes his handicap debut in this sphere on a potentially lenient mark. Lord Baddesley is well worth a second look back hurdling and is next on the list ahead of Stream of Stars and the veteran of the party, Eddiemaurice.

Emergency Evacuation Kempton Park Racecourse has significantly enhanced Safety and Security measures this year to enhance your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance. Secondly should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via an emergency evacuation gate, to the main assembly points; the North Entrance, the South Entrance or the Holly Tree Gate. If these areas are compromised the evacuation will be directed to the centre of the course, where you will receive further instruction. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember; take your belongings with you under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
Health And Safety Notice
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The Racecourse would be grateful if racegoers would observe all Health and Safety requirements whilst at Kempton Park Racecourse. The Emergency Exits from the Bars onto the Grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would appreciate it if Racegoers would not stop in this area. We would also be grateful if only those that are Disabled use the Disabled Viewing Ramp and that Parents keep a close eye on children and prevent them from climbing on the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the FIRST AID room is located opposite the Kauto Star Bar. Public access is prohibited to the Centre Course.
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Kempton Park Racecourse employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Prize Money The Horserace Betting Levy Board General Prize Fund scheme provide for the inclusion of £1,031,800 at this Racecourse in 2020.
