Friday 13th February 2026
Official Programme & Form Guide £3.00
Welcome to Timeform Chase Day! Today’s seven-race programme is one of our favourite days of the season – a core Winter fixture with a touch of quality.
The meeting has provided the final preparatory run for two Cheltenham Festival winners in the last four years including Myretown, winner of the Ultima Steeplechase, last season. Make a note of all today’s runners wherever they go next
The second race on the card is a qualifier for the Albert Bartlett Triple Crown Series Final at the Punchestown Festival and we are delighted to welcome representatives from both Albert Bartlett and Punchestown Racecourse who will, no doubt, be keen to encourage us all to visit later in the Spring.
We are grateful for the support of all today’s race sponsors which, in addition to Timeform and Albert Bartlett, include: Johnston Smillie, Racing TV and friends of the late Toshi McDougall, a much-missed helper of the catering team here at Kelso.
We’dalsoliketothanktheconnectionsofalltherunnersontoday’sprogramme – we’re grateful that you have chosen to come and run your horses at Kelso and we wish you an enjoyable day’s sport.
Finally, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to all racegoers. You help to create that loving feeling that Kelso is so well known for, whatever the weather Good luck, may you find plenty of winners.

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number
2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Three winners make this an interesting heat, with KOCKTAIL BLEU preferred on the basis of his good second behind the promising Baron Noir at Kempton last month. Kaka’s Cousin stepped forward from his winning debut when runner-up at Wetherby last time and there should still be better to come from him, with similar comments applying to They Want Me, who bumped into a subsequent Grade 1 winner on debut before going one better over C&D

Timeform’s jumps editor Dan Barber is a regular presence on course at Kelso thanks to his work with Racing TV. He shares his thoughts on the sport in our Q&A.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START WORKING AT TIMEFORM?
I joined Timeform in October 2005, having completed a summer temping role writing Spotlights for the Racing Post following my graduation from University of Sheffield.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY OF WORKING AT KELSO?
One amusing memory that sticks out looking back was a particularly frigid January afternoon that reduced Gordon Brown and I to a pair of Michelin Men wearing about five layers and shivering uncontrollably as we completed our wrap on Racing TV. Sometimes it’s so cold your lips just won’t work properly!
AND WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT IN THE SPORT?
Forgive the self-praise, but I was alive to the idea More of That was a budding a top-class stayer after he’d won a Wetherby handicap hurdle and gave him a rare shout or two of encouragement the day he wore down Annie Power in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COURSE AT KELSO AND WHAT SORT OF HORSES THRIVE?
When it’s dry, the emphasis is on finding a handy type with speed but, if conditions are testing, having a sluggard on side is no bad thing – especially if low sun has meant the fences in the straight are omitted and the run for home becomes more like five furlongs
ARE THERE ANY JOCKEYS WHO YOU THINK RIDE THE TRACK PARTICULARLY WELL?
Brian Hughes and Danny McMenamin are the first two names that spring to mind, particularly on those soft-ground days when patience is regularly rewarded.
WHEN IT COMES TO ANALYSING RACES, CAN YOU GIVE US A FACTOR YOU BELIEVE TO BE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE?
I always go back to ‘form’ and the strength of it Which horses arrive having performed well in - or even just contested - competitive races featuring other interesting types?
IS THERE A FACTOR YOU THINK PUNTERS PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON?
I often think the lines get too blurred between an apparent preference for a certain type of ground and a horse benefiting from such conditions simply because it brings either stamina or speed more into play.
CAN YOU GIVE US A TRAINER OR TWO WHO YOU THINK ARE UNDERRATED?
Rebecca Menzies seems able to train pretty much anything, and it’s very hard to ignore the fine work Adam Nicol has done with recruits from other stables in his young training career so far.
AND HOW ABOUT A COUPLE OF YOUNG JOCKEYS WHO HAVE IMPRESSED YOU?
Dylan Johnston seems totally unflappable in what is a big job riding good horses Joshua Thompson would be another name to note; he’s impressed more than once with his tactical brain and calmness
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL, WHICH HORSES DO YOU HAVE ON YOUR RADAR?
I feel there’s an element of not seeing the wood for the trees so far as The New Lion’s solid claims go in an otherwise very confused Champion Hurdle picture. I wouldn’t want to lay him at any bigger than 7/4, anyway
AND WHO'S YOUR STRONGEST FANCY ON TODAY'S CARD?
I was up at Ayr the day Big Zouk made a winning start over fences and he very much struck as sure to win a few more. He won't be a big price in the staying handicap chase (16:10) but nor should he be given his scope for improvement so early in his time with Nicky Richards

LION ROSE SIVOLA arguably shaped best when runner-up at Chepstow on his Rules debut back in November and although that form has taken a couple of knocks since, he still ran to a level that would’ve seen him come out on top in most Northern bumpers. Ar Ais Aris is a Rules debutant to keep an eye on in the betting, given he’s out of a dual bumper winner and has already shown ability in an Irish point Newcomers The Shanachie and Thelastmanfrompenr also command a look
The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB

A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.
The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits
Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.
We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient
Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces, and surfaces which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day
The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment
Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight
Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track –but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically
We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.
Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces
We welcome many children to Kelso races Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask that all children are appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above
