Welcome to the first of eight Autumn fixtures at Kelso Racecourse. The start of a new season is always an exciting time and this evening we have a special reason to celebrate because we are helping to raise funds for the Borders Carers Centre, a charity which has a long association with the racecourse.
We would like to extend an especially warm welcome to all of those who have come to support the Borders Carers Centre and hope that you have a very enjoyable evening. Race sponsors RBC Brewin Dolphin, Abbey Fine Wines, and SPG Fire & Security, are all contributing generously to the charity. There will also be an opportunity for racegoers to give directly to the charity via an exit-collection following the final race and hope that you enjoy your day and can contribute to this worthwhile cause.
The racecourse plays host to many parties throughout the year as racegoers invite friends and family to join in with celebrations of special birthdays, anniversaries and other significant events The second race on today’s programme has been named by the family of Gordon Nicol and we’d like you to join with us in wishing Gordon a very happy birthday
This week is National Racehorse Week and we really appreciate the support of the connections of all today’s runners: the owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff. We couldn’t put on such a spectacle without you – so thank you for choosing to run at Kelso Whatever the result, whatever the finishing position of your horses, it’s a delight to see them and we hope that you enjoy a safe and enjoyable day
Good luck, have a fun evening, and thank you so much for coming.

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number
2. Choose your bet
‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.
Please gamble responsibly For more information visit www.gambleaware.co.uk
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Carers Support Plan – We are commissioned by Scottish Borders Council to carry out the Carers Support Plan, which is a carer’s legal right.
The Borders Carers Centre has been providing a comprehensive service to unpaid family carers in the Scottish Borders since 1991. Last year alone, we dealt with nearly 5,000 enquiries and received 660 new referrals to our service.
Carers are the largest source of care and support in each area of the UK. It is in everyone’s interest that they are supported.
• Taking on a caring role can mean facing a life of poverty, isolation, frustration, ill health and depression.
• Many carers give up an income, future employment prospects and pension rights to become a carer
• Many carers also work outside the home and are trying to juggle jobs with their responsibilities as carers.
• The majority of carers struggle alone and do not know that help is available to them.
• Carers say that access to information, financial support and breaks in caring are vital in helping them manage the impact of caring on their lives.
How can we help?
• Practical help – emotional support, breaks, transport, benefits advice, help filling in forms
• Liaising with social work and health to ensure appropriate services are in place.
• Hospital discharge/liaison – intense support when your cared for is in hospital or about to be discharged.
• Emergency card – to help ‘put your mind at ease ’
• Training and education – in skills often needed by carers, such as moving and handling, first aid, and care giving; personal development; stress reduction through reflexology and aromatherapy. Our training is always carer led – so do tell us what you would like to see us offer Some of our most popular sessions have included ‘Coping with feelings of loss and change’ and ‘Dealing with guilt’.
• Training and education for professionals and the third sector in carer awareness.
• Fun – time out, breaks, the opportunity to enjoy a social life, taking into account carers’ special needs and sense of isolation.
• Advocacy – at tribunals, assessments, case reviews, assistance to access funds and services, or whenever a carer needs a friend or supporter
The aim of our work is to help ensure that no carer has to reach crisis point before they get the support they need. In short, to make it easier for carers to cope.
Your support at events such as this allows us to reach and support more carers across the Scottish Borders and make a real difference to them and the people they care for. Thank you.

BALKALIN: Following its run on 6/9/2023 it was reported that the horse ran too freely
JIMMY RABBITTE: Following its run on 19/8/2023 it was reported that the horse suffered interference.

JIMMY RABBITTE is taken to deservedly bring the curtain down on a long losing run. The 10-y-o returned to form when going close over this C&D in May and has remained in good form since, leaving the strong impression that a belated return to the winner’s enclosure is near There could be better to come from Call Me Harry now switched to handicap company and he is second choice ahead of I Am Spider Man and Darkest Day
You are permitted to smoke in all outside areas, including the grandstands and balconies Smoking is prohibited in any enclosed area. This policy includes electronic cigarettes or any other product deemed unacceptable.
We welcome well behaved dogs, as long as they are kept on leads, in the outdoor areas of the public enclosure. Please do not take dogs into areas where food is served.

A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.
The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits
Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.
We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient
Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces, and surfaces which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day
The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment
Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight
Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track –but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them
so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically
We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.
Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces
We welcome many children to Kelso races Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask that all children are appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above
