‘SHADES OF MIDNIGHT’ HORSE OF THE YEAR AWARD
The ‘Shadesof Midnight’ Horse of the Year Award, donated by theowners of ‘Shady’(the winner of seven races including three at Kelso), is presented to the owners of the horse judged to have put up the most stirring performance (or performances) at Kelso during the 2022/23 season, selectedfromalistofnominationsmadebyracegoers.Theladorlassofthehorsewillreceive£200.
The first point to highlight about the nomination process was the very obvious and strong affection that came across in the submissions Every horse that runs at Kelso has a group of dedicated fans and wereceivednominationsfromracegoers, racehorsesyndicatemembers, stablestaffandbookmakers. From the long list of nominations, the judges singled out three horses for an especially honourable mention:
Les’s Legacy - trained by Susan Corbett at Otterburn, this 6-y-o ran three times at Kelso during the season finishing third, first and fourth, and was very consistent in his three runs at other tracks - reminding the judges of Shady
Flower of Scotland - locally trained by Sandy Thomson, this lovely 8-y-o grey mare won the Borders National in a canter and was third in her other course run.
Bill Baxter – a 7-y-o grey raider from the South, trained by Warren Greatrex He won on both his appearances at Kelso during the season, before winning the Topham at Aintree, boosting the Kelso form at a Grade 1 track
The winner is Wheelbahri - A homebred, trained locally by Stuart Coltherd, Wheelbahri won on both his starts at Kelso during the latest season, before suffering a tragic life ending injury at home in March. He is sadly missed by all those involved in the SC Racing Club and many regular racegoers too
Wheelbahri ran in each of the last four seasons at Kelso, with seven of his twenty runs at the track - matching his dam, who also ran seven times at Kelso Three of Wheelbahri’s six wins were landed here – reminding the judges of Shades of Midnight, also a homebred, who won on three of his eight appearances at Kelso Wheelbahri won his final steeplechase off a BHA handicap mark of 111, improving 31lbs in just over fourteen months The judges admired his remarkable story and hope that this award provides some solace to his connections

The vote goes to ELOI DU PUY, who has shown more encouraging signs since venturing down the handicap route and this 5-y-o has more going for him than most of these. Game Beaaa will be a threat under Brian Hughes if the recent wind op has had the desired effect and Balranald is third choice, despite some doubts as to whether he will build on his latest effort

INDIAN LOUIS has already won two points and has joined an excellent stable, so he’s fancied to make a successful start. Shengai Enki should find this race a lot easier than the one he contested at Punchestown last time, so he’s considered the biggest danger, although Lemoine should be on the premises if tuned up after 5 months off.
