Wednesday 10th May 2023
Welcome to Kelso Racecourse for a bumper eight-race programme including two divisions of the RBC Brewin Dolphin Handicap Hurdle. Today’s feature race is the Class 3 Bedmax Handicap Steeplechase for which there are six declared runners including the popular Cedar Hill, already a four-time winner over fences at Kelso
One of the defining differences between jump racing and flat racing is the career length of the participants – with many of our favourite jump horses returning to Kelso year after year It’s one of the reasons why jump racing enthusiasts like to pay special attention to the runners in novice hurdle races and National Hunt flat races: to spot horses to follow for the future.
We’re therefore grateful to the connections of all the runners on today’s programme – thank you for choosing to run at Kelso We wish you an enjoyable afternoon’s sport.
We’d also like to thank each of the race sponsors who have contributed to the prize money for today’s programme which, in addition to Bedmax and RBC Brewin Dolphin, include the architects Aitken Turnbull, Bruce Stevenson Insurance Brokers and Racing TV.
Finally, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to all racegoers – you help to create the wonderful atmosphere that Kelso is known for. Good luck and may you find plenty of winners.

How to Bet
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number
2. Choose your bet
‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come frst
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come frst, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifes as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - frst place only; between five and seven runners - frst and second place; eight runners and over - frst three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - frst four places
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a ffth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.
Please gamble responsibly For more information visit www.gambleaware.co.uk
You must be 18 or over to place a bet
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

PLAY SMARTER
In a race where very few arrive with compelling claims a chance is taken on JUST CALL ME AL who offered a bit more back from wind surgery last time and has dipped to a mark he should be capable of winning from if retaining anything like his old ability. The consistent Castletown is sure to be thereabouts again. Rebecca Menzies handicap newcomer Boomslang would also come into it if the betting suggests he’s fancied.

‘SHADES OF MIDNIGHT’ HORSE OF THE YEAR AWARD
The ‘Shadesof Midnight’ Horse of the Year Award, donated by theowners of ‘Shady’(the winner of seven races including three at Kelso), is presented to the owners of the horse judged to have put up the most stirring performance (or performances) at Kelso during the 2022/23 season, selectedfromalistofnominationsmadebyracegoers.Theladorlassofthehorsewillreceive£200.
The first point to highlight about the nomination process was the very obvious and strong affection that came across in the submissions Every horse that runs at Kelso has a group of dedicated fans and wereceivednominationsfromracegoers, racehorsesyndicatemembers, stablestaffandbookmakers. From the long list of nominations, the judges singled out three horses for an especially honourable mention:
Les’s Legacy - trained by Susan Corbett at Otterburn, this 6-y-o ran three times at Kelso during the season finishing third, first and fourth, and was very consistent in his three runs at other tracks - reminding the judges of Shady
Flower of Scotland - locally trained by Sandy Thomson, this lovely 8-y-o grey mare won the Borders National in a canter and was third in her other course run.
Bill Baxter – a 7-y-o grey raider from the South, trained by Warren Greatrex He won on both his appearances at Kelso during the season, before winning the Topham at Aintree, boosting the Kelso form at a Grade 1 track
The winner is Wheelbahri - A homebred, trained locally by Stuart Coltherd, Wheelbahri won on both his starts at Kelso during the latest season, before suffering a tragic life ending injury at home in March. He is sadly missed by all those involved in the SC Racing Club and many regular racegoers too
Wheelbahri ran in each of the last four seasons at Kelso, with seven of his twenty runs at the track - matching his dam, who also ran seven times at Kelso Three of Wheelbahri’s six wins were landed here – reminding the judges of Shades of Midnight, also a homebred, who won on three of his eight appearances at Kelso Wheelbahri won his final steeplechase off a BHA handicap mark of 111, improving 31lbs in just over fourteen months The judges admired his remarkable story and hope that this award provides some solace to his connections
