Kelso Racecard - Saturday 4th March

Page 1

WELCOME

Saturday 4th March 2023

Thank you for joining us at Kelso Racecourse.

We like to think that every raceday at Kelso is an important event But some days shine more brightly than others. They just do With £275,000 of prize money, bet365 Morebattle Hurdle Day isn’t just Kelso’s most valuable raceday, it’s the day that we look forward to the most - the perfect blend of high quality jump pattern races (the Grade 2 bet365 Premier Novices Hurdle / the Listed bet365 Premier Steeplechase) and one of the most competitive handicap hurdles in the calendar (the bet365 Morebattle Hurdle).

Add the intrigue of a £100,000 bonus for following up at the Cheltenham Festival and we have a heady mix.

This year we’re looking forward to welcoming The Shunter back to Kelso Plotted by the remarkable Emmet Mullins to scoop the Morebattle Bonus back in 2021, The Shunter (like several others declared for an intriguing renewal of the bet365 Premier Steeplechase) is being prepared for a possible tilt at the World’s most famous steeplechase - the Grand National. A win there would surely seal his reputation as one of the most versatile racehorses in history.

But this day will never be about just one horse. We are immensely grateful to the connections of all today’s runners for sharing them with us at Kelso

I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to make this day so special: from the sponsors bet365, the racehorse owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff, raceday staff, the ITV team and all of the racegoers. Have a fabulous day and, when you return next year, please bring two friends!

How to Bet

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number

2. Choose your bet

‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come frst

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come frst, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifes as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - frst place only; between five and seven runners - frst and second place; eight runners and over - frst three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - frst four places

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a ffth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

The potentially smart SHOLOKJACK put his chase-bow mishap firmly behind him when scoring at Lingfield with ridiculous ease and can follow up en route to even better things Bill Baxter was rather unfortunate to come down when bidding for the hat-trick at Hereford and looks the clear threat, with Gaillimh A Stor best of the others.

A cracking renewal. Emmet Mullins sent out subsequent Cheltenham Festival winner The Shunter to take this in 2021 and has a very interesting contender in the shape of MCTIGUE, who ended 2022 with a couple of underwhelming efforts in good company but is well handicapped if he can get back to the level he attained when scoring in Grade 2 company in France in the autumn. Deere Mark has more to give and is feared most ahead of L’Eau du Sud, Teddy Blue and Benson.
