Thursday 29th December 2022

Thank you for joining us at Kelso Racecourse.

Welcome to Kelso for the Festive Fling Raceday We hope that you have enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and that you have a super afternoon here at the races We are glad to have this opportunity to host so many happy gatherings of families, friends, and work colleagues

This afternoon’s feature race is the £16,000 Children’s Immunology Trust Novices Handicap Steeplechase, sponsored in support of a fantastic charity in order to aid fundraising efforts which will be taking place in the Younger Grandstand today We hope that all those attending the charitable brunch have a fabulous day

We are grateful to our race sponsors who, in addition to the supporters of the Children’s Immunology Trust, include Visit Kelso, Racing TV, the Amateur Jockeys Association, and SPG Fire & Security. We’d like to thank each of them for their support and wish all their guests a successful afternoon.

We would also like to extend an especially warm welcome, on what is likely to be a chilly day, to the connections of all the runners on today’s card - your presence, and that of your horses, is greatly appreciated. It’s a fabulous programme with seven highly competitive races, greatly enhanced by your decision to support Kelso Racecourse.

Advance ticket sales for this meeting have proved extremely popular and we hope that everyone finds a comfortable niche from which to enjoy the day’s events, despite the wintry weather However, if today is the first outing for a gift you’ve been given – a new hat, coat, or scarf – please don’t be shy – there are some fabulous prizes for the best winter costumes, courtesy of the Schloss Roxburghe Hotel and A Hume Clothing. Judging will take place early in the afternoon.

Wishing you the very best for 2023 – from everyone at Kelso Racecourse.

How to Bet

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number

2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come frst

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come frst, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifes as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - frst place only; between five and seven runners - frst and second place; eight runners and over - frst three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - frst four places

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a ffth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

SMACKWATER JACK caught the eye reappearing from an absence of just over 2 years when fifth at Chepstow earlier this month, seeming to finish with running left. With this step back up in trip in his favour and an experienced amateur booked, Olly Murphy’s charge is fancied to come out on top Hold The Note finally took advantage of a much-reduced mark here earlier this month so he heads up the dangers, ahead of Camp Belan and Morozov Cocktail.

Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Charm Offensive (FR), 11-2 Inis Oirr (IRE), 7-1 Schalke (GB), 10-1 Big Bad Bear (IRE), Deluxe Range (IRE), 12-1 Emitom (IRE), 14-1 Enemy Coast Ahead (GB), Lissen To The Lady (IRE), 16-1 Leostar (GB), 18-1 Guiri (GER), 22-1 Firth of Forth (IRE), 33-1 Nights In Venice (GB) PLAY SMARTER

LISSEN TO THE LADY caught the eye on her return to action when mid-field here last month, finishing with running left, so she can build on that effort to land a fourth C&D success with testing conditions to suit Heading the list of dangers is Inis Oirr, who is open to improvement on his handicap debut, while Charm Offensive can give another good account

CIT was launched in 2012. To date we have held three large events and a few smaller fundraisers raising over £400,000 that has enabled us to:

1. Fund a specialist paediatric immunology nurse at The Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh for the past four years. She works with and supports over eighty children and their families, providing a base and a contact at the Sick kids that previously did not exist. The children often have complex medical needs and are under many specialists, our nurse coordinates their care, making life so much easier for the children and their families.

2.Purchase nine immunoglobulin pumps - these allow nine children to have their treatments at home, at school, on holiday, anywhere but in Hospital. This gives them a great sense of independence and normality.

3.Fund sibling trips for CHAS. So far, we have funded three week long trips to Skye and four weekend trips. CHAS understand the impact on siblings of having a brother or sister with a life limiting condition and do incredible work with them, to support them and help them come to terms with the reality of what life holds. They get to have fun and to meet other children that have been through or are in through the same situation.

We are a tiny charity run by friends with no staffing costs or overheads. We have had incredible support since we started to allow us to fund all the things we have, for which we are incredibly grateful. All the money we raise goes to making a difference to the lives of these amazing children and their families.

Thank you for your continued support.

SAFETY INFORMATION

A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.

The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

Alcohol & Substance Abuse

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits

Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.

Slips, Trips, Falls

We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient

Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces, and surfaces which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day

Fences, Walls & Barriers

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment

Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight

Horses

Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track –but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically

Fires

We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.

Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces

Children

We welcome many children to Kelso races Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask that all children are appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above
