Jonathan Garratt Managing Director, Kelso Races Ltd

The team at Kelso Races are deeply saddened by the death of our Queen and will be joining the rest of the country to pay our respects during this mourning period. Visitors will be invited to participate in a period of silence, prior to the start of racing, to reflect on her remarkable life. Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal had been expected to attend this meeting in order to host a reception for the County’s carers and unveil a plaque to mark 200 years of racing on the Berrymoss. Sadly, thoseevents can not take place today for obvious reasons, and we hope that both are merely postponed and that we’ll be able to bring you news of a replacement date for them later in the season.

Built to a design by the renowned Yorkshire based architect John Carr, the foundation stone for the old grandstand was laid on 12th July, 1882. According to the historian J. Fairfax-Blakeborough, the first races took place on the Berrymoss on 16th April, 1823 and it is therefore our intention to celebrate our Bicentenary throughout the 2022/23 season – although it should be noted that racing had already been taking place at Kelso, in other locations, prior to 1734. You’ll find further historical information interspersed with today’s runners and riders in the pages that follow.

While Kelso Races owes its existence to many inspirational individuals, some of whom we hope to pay tribute to throughout the season, it is today’s participants that I’d particularly like to thank in this space. We couldn’t put on such a lovely spectacle without the horses – so our gratitude should be extended to all of the racehorse owners, trainers and jockeys that are associated with the runners today, together with the stable staff that care for them. We are also grateful to all the racegoers who have ventured to Kelso today, together you help to make the friendly atmosphere for which the racecourse is known. Thank you for coming!

Without Conviction

LOWFLYERS

The syndicate is about to embark on a new adventure with the Lucinda Russell trained mare Without Conviction. The seven-year-old got off the mark, on only her second outing over fences, at Hexham last December. The relatively dry Winter probably worked against her last season, as she enjoys testing conditions underfoot, and Lucinda feels that there’s more to come. We’re planning a trip to see Without Conviction on the gallops soon. There’s still time for Annual Members to join the syndicate - the annual fee is £500 for each individual, or £800 for a couple. We try to get runs at northern courses and encourage as many syndicate members to come and watch as possible. Members will receive weekly WhatsApp updates so that you can follow her progress as she prepares for the races.

It’s an easy way to dip your toe in the water of racehorse ownership. For more information contact the racecourse office or e-mail info@kelso-races.co.uk

Exclusive to Kelso Annual Members, the Lowflyers Racing Syndicate has been remarkably successful with 23 winners over the years.

Roxburghe Handicap Kelso 1906

In 1821 Kelso Races moved from Caverton Edge to Blakelaw, about 3 miles south of Kelso. But when the site at Blakelaw became overrun with travellers, the Duke’s tenants objected and the racecourse was moved to its current location on the Berrymoss – a freshly drained piece of ground which had been reclaimed from the marsh close by the northern edge of the town.

The history of racing in Scotland was set out in fascinating detail by J. FairfaxBlakeborough in his ‘Northern Turf History’, Volume IV, 1973, starting with the legend that Scotland’s fastest horses were descended from those that were rescued from the ship-wrecked Spanish Armada, off the coast of Galloway, in 1588. However, in the chapter on Kelso, he places the first record of a race at Caverton Edge in a period prior to 1734 – when Mr Justice’s grey mare, Miss Modesty, beat Sir William Maxwell’s Whitefoot and Lord Cranston’s Almanzor.

ANCIENT ORIGINS

It’s hard to imagine that horse races haven’t been taking place since the very first day that horses became domesticated. Like two young children with new bikes, wherever two horses were found in close proximity, the urge to test them against each other must be great. Whereas the first bike was produced in the 1860s, the oldest known man-made sculpture of a horse was produced roughly twenty-eight thousand years before the birth of Christ.

In 1751 the Caledonian Hunt gave a plate worth 50 guineas to be run for at Caverton Edge and, from 1760 onwards, the races were established on a semi-regular basis. By 1773, when Mr Weatherby published his first Racing Calendar, the only two Scottish meetings thought worthy of inclusion were at Edinburgh and Kelso where The Hon.

It’s probable that the horses were ridden by their owners or their owners’ grooms, there being no professional jockeys at this time. Both the riders and the grooms would have worn the owner’s livery and taken the horses to the races by road –frequently a journey of four to five days. The grooms would have slept alongside their horses in loose boxes at hotels along the way.

Capt. Keith Stewart’s Charon (by Slouch) beat Mr Mien’s Whitelegs.

late Duke of Roxburghe. It is 1¼ miles round and 60ft in breadth. The horses are seen by every spectator from the moment of starting to that of reaching the winning post. On the West side of the course a very elegant stand of polished stone is erected. Beneath is an excellent dwelling for the person who keeps it, and above are two tiers of galleries surrounded by stone ballustrades and an elegant cast-iron railing, on which ladies and gentlemen station themselves, and watch the racing.

The Sporting Magazine of 1821 announced, “The Duke of Roxburghe has lately purchased the Berrymoss at Kelso for the purpose of forming it into a racecourse. His Grace means to erect an elegant stand upon the ground, with a tavern underneath, and in all respects to make the course and its accompaniments as complete as possible.”

Sadly, the fifth Duke of Roxburghe did not live to see racing on the Berrymoss course but, as the first venue built specifically to stage horseracing in the country, he “had the pleasure of knowing it to be the first racecourse in Scotland.”

The foundation stone for the grandstand was laid on 12th July 1822. A contemporary writer described the new course (without consideration to the position of the border) as “One of the finest in England.” He continued: “It was made at vast expense in 1822 by James,

The grandstand was built to a design, provided by the renowned Yorkshirebased architect John Carr forty-three years earlier in 1778 (John Carr died in 1807). Carr was one of the most competent and successful British architects working at the end of the 18th century. His designs for Kelso Races are comparable to his three earlier stands at Doncaster, Nottingham and York Races, none of which survive in anything close to their original form.

STRONG TEAM has dropped to a mark 9lb lower than when taking this race 12 months ago so he might be worth siding with having run a bit better at Sedgefield last time. Genever Dragon is respected for the McCain/Hughes pairing, while Calliope is still more than capable of making an impact form her reduced mark.

two races staged over jumps at Kelso were won by C.J. Cunningham, a highly respected sporting figure of the day, who is commemorated through the naming of the Annual Members Bar.

The first race meeting staged on the Berrymoss, on April 16th 1823, technically consisted of just one race staged in several heats. A Flat race for hunters, the final heat was won by Mr R Johnson’s Sir Thomas, ridden by Capt. Campbell, beating four others by half a head. Flat racing continued on the Berrymoss until 1888.

during the most recent Summer that they were moved away from their original positions. Of course, they’ll have moved a bit, give or take, but for more than a hundred years every horse participating in a race was obliged to pass between the wings of the obstacles; missing one would have resulted in disqualification. It made sense for jumps to be positioned at the narrowest points of any track which, at Kelso, meant placing them adjacent to the hedged boundaries of the old fields.

Jump racing was introduced in 1883, five years before the cessation of Flat racing, and required the enlargement of the circuit to include three additional fields which were procured from the neighbouring Hendersyde Park Estate. Until about 1925, one of the three fields was always left under plough – as was customary for steeplechase courses then, just as it is in the Velka Pardubicka

Thetoday.first

Fast forward to the current millennium and runners are occasionally obliged to bypass fences if, for example, the obstacle is damaged during a race. This means that it is advantageous for the fences to be located at the widest part of the track, enabling the runners to pass to the left or the right. The new position enables us to move them sideways too, providing fresh running lines to race on later in the season.

The obstacles in the back straight of the steeplechase course at Kelso were located, logically, at the boundary of each of the three new fields. And although the fences have changed in shape, size and material over the years, it was only

Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork. Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces.

Fires

The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.

Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.

Slips, Trips, Falls

Fences, Walls & Barriers

Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track –but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically.

There often welcome children to Kelso races. Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask all children to be appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above.

A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.

Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces and space which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.

Children

Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.

Horses

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink. Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many. So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits.

Alcohol & Substance Abuse

We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient.

SAFETY INFORMATION

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas. This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment.
