Weatherbys proudly sponsor all seven of today’s races, with the card getting underway with a competitive-looking renewal of the Weatherbys Scientific Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.
Arguably, the most interesting races are the two novices’ hurdles, starting with the Weatherbys Private Bank Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, in which the pair of previous winners stand out. Alastair Ralph, who won last year’s race with Holly Hartingo, saddles Market Rasen winner Lets Go To Vegas and the daughter of Getaway showed a good attitude to fend off odds-on favourite, Iorens.
The runner-up represented the Dan Skelton stable and the Warwickshirebased trainer runs the highly-promising Kateira this afternoon. A softground bumper winner at this track 11 months ago, she went on to finish fifth in the Nickel Coin at Aintree and created a good impression when winning a novices’ hurdle at Uttoxeter on reappearance. The longer trip looks sure to suit and the six-year-old is one of the more interesting runners on the whole card.
The Arkle Finance EBF “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle also features a course bumper winner, with Western Zephyr successful at this track just under a year ago That form worked out quite well, with the second and third both winning next time, and like Kateira, Charlie Longsdon’s six-yearold went on to contest a Grade 2 bumper at the Grand National meeting. He failed to make an impact and shaped like he would appreciate reverting to a right-handed track, which he did when making a successful reappearance at Ludlow in November He returned to the Shropshire venue last month, where he was no match for the promising Pembroke, but should again give a good account of himself, with Sean Bowen, who was aboard for both wins under Rules, reunited with the Westerner gelding.
Of his 14 opponents – all of whom receive weight – the Gary Moore-trained Inneston is the most intriguing. A winner on his sole start in France, he beat Irish Point in an AQPS race in October 2021 and that form looks particularly strong, with the runner-up going on to win a Grade 1 and has since performed well since joining Gordon Elliott and Robcour In three starts this season, he has won a Cork maiden hurdle and finished runnerup in a brace of Grade 1s, latterly in last weekend’s Lawlors of Naas Novice Hurdle, whilst Inneston has run just once, at Newbury On his first start for 440 days, he faded late on in an introductory hurdle, which was won by stable-mate Jupiter du Gite, but there should be plenty more to come The sharper track could well be beneficial, although a slight concern would be as to whether or not this race comes too quickly (just 13 days) on the back of that British debut.
Connections of Inneston are represented by Perseus Way in the Weatherbys Chatteris Fen Juvenile Hurdle and he was last seen finishing third in Grade 2 company. Runner-up at that same level at Cheltenham on debut, the Sea The Stars gelding
Farside: Inneston
Jupiter Du Gite
was a wide-margin winner at Leicester, before running a sound race behind Comfort Zone in Chepstow’s Finale Rated 125, he sets a good standard, although given how well he appears to stay, there is a slight concern about this sharper track on (likely) livelier ground.
Despereaux was a course-anddistance winner on his second start (ran out when holding every chance on debut at Ffos Las) and represents Jane Williams, who has her horses in red-hot form at present. She has three runners on the card and has saddled five winners from 12 runners since the turn of the year, with her 2023 form figures reading 1122126F1271. And, Samuel Spade and Chaos Control renew rivalry, having finished first and second at Kempton over Christmas. As that was a Class 2 contest, the winner has to shoulder a hefty (8lbs) penalty and isn’t, therefore, sure to confirm the form. This looks to be a really competitive seven-runner race and it isn’t inconceivable to think that a couple of these runners could be lining up in the Boodles at Cheltenham come March.
Samuel Spade is one of four runners on the card for Ben Pauling, who is another trainer who has his string in fine form. Three-time hurdles winner The Cob represents Pauling in the five-runner Weatherbys Hamilton Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase and he might be capable of defying top-weight. A Grade 2 winner as a novice hurdler, the nine-year-old relishes soft ground and made a successful start to his chasing career at Uttoxeter a month ago Despite jumping to his right (configuration of this course should, therefore, suit), he made all to beat Cobblers Dream, who won last year’s Lanzarote and finished runner-up in the Martin Pipe More is required from a 7lbs higher mark, but he might be up to the task under Kielan Woods.
The meeting concludes with the Weatherbys Racing Bank Handicap Chase – a 0-105 contest over an extended 2m7f – and the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide ‘Newcomers’ National Hunt Flat Race.
Several leading stables are represented in the bumper, with some noteworthy pedigrees on show. Jonjo O’Neill’s Ilestdancingspirit is a Coastal Path halfbrother to bumper winners Festival d’Ex and Good Luck Charm, whilst Dan Skelton’s Lone Soldier is a Soldier Of Fortune half-brother to Tedham, himself a smart performer (reached 131 at his peak) for Jonjo O’Neill. Kim Bailey won the bumper at Exeter on Tuesday and saddles Destroytheevidence, who is a half-brother to Arizona Cardinal (won a novices’ handicap chase in October), useful mare Lilly Pedlar and bumper winner Spike Jones.
And, Newmarket-based Flat trainer Rae Guest runs the filly Fashionelle, who is Aidan Coleman’s only ride of the day. Guest saddled the filly Kutaiba to win a junior bumper at this track in early-November and this daughter of Champs Elysees is a half-sister to a hurdles winner, so ought to stay the trip Guest has actually only had two National Hunt runners so far this season, with the other finishing fourth in the bumper at Doncaster on Tuesday. Being Flat-bred, she probably wouldn’t want too much rain, but receives both the sex and age allowances so carries just 10-2.

Emergency Evacuation
Huntingdon Racecourse has significantly enhanced Safety and Security measures this year to enhance your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance. Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via an emergency evacuation gate, either to the assembly Point behind the Clubhouse, overflow to the picnic car park or if both these areas are compromised then to use the Centre of the Course, where you will receive further instructions. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember; take your belongings with you under the directions of the Stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
IMPORTANT NOTICES
Health And Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if racegoers would observe all Health and Safety requirements whilst at Huntingdon Racecourse. The Emergency Exits from the Bars onto the Grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would appreciate it if Racegoers would not stop in this area. We would also be grateful if only those that are Disabled use the Disabled Viewing Ramp and that parents keep a close eye on children and prevent them from climbing on the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the FIRST AID room is located on the ground floor of the Cromwell Stand. Public access is prohibited to the Centre Course.
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Huntingdon Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident vinvolving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Photography
Racegoers please note it is not permitted to take photographs on racecourses except within the areas normally open to the public. Amateur photographers must ensure that they do not intrude upon areas used by professional photographers. Flash photography is not permitted in any circumstances.
