Today’s RoR Parade

A Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade of former racehorses takes place in the parade ring before the first race at approximately 12.30pm.

The parade showcases the versatility of the Thoroughbred, together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers. Today’s eight-strong parade features locally-based former racehorses who are all thriving in their chosen second careers.

RoR, British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses retired from racing, actively promotes the wellbeing of former racehorses through retraining, rehoming, and welfare support. Their mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of all former racehorses by highlighting Thoroughbred versatility, educating owners, and establishing a nationwide safety net for horses requiring charitable assistance. In the equestrian realm, RoR annually stages 39 separate competition series across 14 different disciplines, catering to all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite.

1. DASHING TO YOU - KIRSTY EVANS

5-year-old gelding by Olympic Glory, formerly trained by William Stone

Breeder: Lofts Hall Stud & Yarraman Park

Dashing To You has been with his rider Kirsty for only ten weeks, so he is in the early stages of his retraining career The plan is to show him, with a trip to Royal Windsor show planned for early May to take part in the Tattersalls RoR Open In-Hand qualifier He has also shown promise when jumping, so this will hopefully open more avenues for him in the future.

2. FLEMENSMIX – RIDDEN BYABI DANIEL

16-year-old gelding by Flemensfirth, formerly trained by Pauline Harkin

Breeder: E R Hanbury

Flemensmix aka Kim ran eight times over hurdles, winning twice. On retiring from racing, he was retrained by his current owner 5* event rider Phoebe Buckley and has evented up to BE 100 with some good places, finishing 2nd at his first event. Flemensmix has now turned his hoof to hunting and just finished his first season with the Thurlow. He also goes on beach rides, does some dressage and general riding club activities, he is a joy to ride and have around and is a super safe horse and loved by all that ride him.

3. MAXXIMUS - RIDDEN BY RACHEL RUNNACLES

14-year-old gelding by Insatiable, formerly trained by Mrs S J Humphrey

Breeder: Kilnamoragh Stud

Maxximus ran over hurdles, point to pointed and took part in a charity race before retiring from racing. He is loving life; he enjoys hunting, has also turned his hoof to dressage and we are looking forward to doing some RoR showing this year.

4. MINTJULEP – RIDDEN BY SOPHIE RUNNACLES

6-year-old mare by Helmet, formerly trained by Daniel Steele

Mint Julep ran eleven times on the flat and on her best run placed 3rd. Apparently, she wasted her energy getting far too excited at the start to win any races. Now loving life with us, she has begun jumping and will hopefully event this year after seeing the world showing at Herts, Suffolk and Tendring show competing in the RoR classes last year

5. NEWTON KYME RIDDEN BY LOLA DUNN

8-year-old gelding by Vale of York, formerly trained by David Simcock

Breeder: Rahhah Bloodstock Limited

Newton Kyme aka Kyme raced twice on the flat before hanging up his racing shoes at 3yrs old. Since then, Kyme has proven himself to be an excellent horse in many disciplines. He played polo and arena polo for two years with Ben Marsh, he has also taken part in pony club rallies, hunted with the Essex, and most recently has qualified for the RoR Winter Dressage Festival later this month with his rider Lola Dunn. Kyme has proven himself to be a true all-rounder and luckily is more successful in his new career than his first.

6. TAMMOOZ - RIDDEN BY PAUL DAVIS

8-year-old gelding by Lawman, formerly trained by Roger Varian

Tammooz’s last run after nine starts and two wins on the flat was in November 2019

After some down time, the retraining process began, being brought on by his owner Sophie Sutton who has been educating him in his flat work and jumping.

This past winter he has been on loan to the hunt and spent all season hunting with the hounds and has taken to it like a duck to water. He will return to Sophie now who plans on eventing and doing a bit of everything with him.

7. I AM THE MAN - RIDDEN BY CHELSEY ROWE

19-year-old gelding by Auction House, formerly trained by Brian McMath

Breeder: C K Hill

I Am The Man aka Manny retired from racing in 2010 following one run on the flat where he finished second. Unfortunately, he had a suspected tendon injury so was retired to his forever home with today’s rider Chelsey. He began his retraining after a summer in the field, sound and back up and running, he enjoyed a winter out hunting where it was discovered he hates puddles! Over the years Manny has dabbled in most equestrian activities including side saddle, jumping, hunting, dressage, and his real love, showing.

He absolutely loves to be admired and have his picture taken, he has qualified for the Tattersalls RoR finals at Hickstead three times and for the Royal International show. He really is one of a kind.
