BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS

DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET - WIN OR EACH-WAY

The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright An each-way bet is effectively two bets – one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4 A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - Win bets only, no places offered

• 3 or 4 runners – Win bets only Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2.

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win” Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings

Winnerofaheavy-groundPertemps QualifieratSandownlastDecember, hereturnedtotheEshertracktorun asoundraceinthevaluableHeroes Handicap Hurdle, before struggling on quicker ground in the Pertemps FinalatCheltenham.

On the back of another windoperation, the imposing eightyear-old – who was a Grade 2 winner as a novice hurdler (at his beloved Sandown, unsurprisingly) – is certainly worth another try over fences and sets the standard, with underfootconditionstosuit.Itisalso worth noting that Nicholls boast a fantasticstrike-ratehereatHexham (80%), with four of his five previous runners at the track having proven successful.

Steppingupintripandfacingsofter ground should see improvement from KingOfAnswers, who finished last of five on chase debut here last month. The six-year-old, who represents the stable of Lucinda

Russell & Michael Scudamore, showedimprovedforoverastaying trip at Perth in the spring and it is worth remembering that he wasn’t beaten too far by Wendigo in an IrishPoint.

Kilmore Rock was pulled-up on his first start over fences and subsequently finished tailed off over hurdles at Newcastle. Susan Corbett’s six-year-old has plenty to findonofficialBHARatingsandasa result, is possibly best watched on groundthatislikelytobesofterthan ideal.

The other pair are making their respective chasing debuts. Young Jack is another who has plenty to find on ratings but twice won on testing ground over hurdles and is a former winning Irish Pointer. OwnedbyDavidArmstrongandLee Westwood, he represents the Chris Grant stable and the trainer seems to have his horses in a good place atpresent.

Stuart Crawford’s Ayiko completes the line-up and appeals more as a likely threat. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the Racecourse’s Veterinary team Qualified Paramedics and Doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving the treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment.
