WELCOME E TO HEXHAM

The spell of fine dry weather we have enjoyed in March, April and May has provided an extra work load for our grounds team having had to water the course on a near daily basis to retain moisture in the ground and ensure the going has been on the easy side of good for all meetings We at Hexham along with all other racecourses prioritise horse welfare at the top of our agenda and racing on safe ground is vital to ensure the longevity of horses in racing.

You will see today’s race card at Epsom is also in your race card and all races will be shown on the large screen for you to follow throughout the day. Some if not all oncourse bookmakers will be offering prices for you to enjoy a bet especially on the Derby one of the highlights of the racing year although the most important 3yo. race of the year goes off at 5.50 “The Juvenile Hurdle”.

We welcome back the “Marrill Group” and Shaun Conroy sponsors of the 2nd and 5th race Our thanks also go to Paula Pennington sponsoring a race in memory of her late husband Paul together with the Hughes family with a race in memory of Tricia.

Whether you are visiting the course for the first time or a regular attendee we hope you have a successful and enjoyable day and look forward to welcoming you back

If in need of assistance when on the racecourse please contact the racecourse office situated next to the turnstiles or ask a member of catering, stewarding or racecourse staff who will be only too pleased to assist Robert Whitelock Racecourse Manager

BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS

DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET - WIN OR EACH-WAY

The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright An each-way bet is effectively two bets – one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4 A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - Win bets only, no places offered

• 3 or 4 runners – Win bets only Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2.

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win” Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings

PLAY SMARTER

An open Group 3 to kick off Derby Day and it could pay to side with Ralph Beckett’s returning SKELLET who kept the highest company for much of 2024 before ending with victory in a Sandown Listed contest and appeals as the sort to kick on this season. Royal Dress posted a good third in this contest 12 months ago and teed herself up for another prominent showing when third in York’s Middleton Stakes so heads the list of dangers. Spiritual, Sparks Fly, Sirona and Sunfall all command respect too.

PLAY SMARTER

A big field but it’s hard to ignore the claims of RUBY’S PROFIT, who looked all speed when accounting for several of these at Goodwood a fortnight ago and stall 18 may well be the plum draw here. Against The Wind is also going the right way so he’s on the shortlist, with Blinky another well berthed to attack.

PLAY SMARTER

The Dante is often the key middle-distance Derby trial and the unbeaten PRIDE OF ARRAS, who was well on top at York, can become the sixth runner this century to complete the double. He has a very similar profile to the last horse to do it, Desert Crown, who was also making just his third start here, and seems sure to stay this longer trip, while 2 of his 3 siblings are Epsom winners. 2000 Guineas hero Ruling Court is the one to beat if he stays, with Delacroix the pick of Aidan O’Brien’s trio.

The vote goes to top-weight PRESENT FAIR, who hasn’t always been the easiest to catch right but arrives here in top form, on the back of a win at Bangor and an equally good effort in defeat when going close at Uttoxeter The 8-y-o remains feasibly treated and gets the nod ahead of Wee Alki and Billable Grant. TIMEFORMVIEW Most progressive on AW this winter, winning 6 times at up to 1 1/2m. However, arrives here having finished well held on each of his last 2 starts back on turf and he looks to have plenty on his plate from 6lb out of the weights here. TFRHIIII BHA75

DECLARED RUNNERS 17 2024: RELENTLESS VOYAGER 4 9 8 Oisin Murphy 7-1 (Andrew Balding) 14 ran Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No. 2, 7. Blinkers worn by No. 11. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 3, 15, 16, 17. Running for the first time since Gelding No. 1.

Probable S.P’s: 11-2 Valvano (IRE), 8-1 Sam Hawkens (IRE), Small Fry (IRE), 10-1 Asgard’s Captain (IRE), Candyman Stan (GB), 12-1 Great Bedwyn (GB), 16-1 Fouroneohfever (IRE), Vice President (IRE), 18-1 Night Breeze (IRE), Dream Harder (IRE), Beauld As Brass (GB), 22-1 Maxi King (IRE), Something (GB), 25-1 Miller Spirit (IRE), 40-1 Galactic Charm (GB), 66-1 Torcello (IRE), 80-1 Paradoxical (IRE)

VALVANO is very lightly raced for his age and, following 6 months off, posted a creditable fourth in handicap at Goodwood (9.9f) 5 weeks ago. A rangy sort who appeals as the type to be suited by the step back up to 1 1/2m, he could be the answer with first-time cheekpieces now applied. C&D winner Small Fry improved again when successful at Chester recently and he’s a threat Fellow improving pair Candyman Stan and Sam Hawkens are others to consider, along with the likeable Asgard’s Captain. This may go the way of the progressive CIRCE who looked a sprinter on the up when landing the double at Windsor 12 days ago, pulling clear with the runner-up. She’s ground versatile and should make a bold bid for the hat-trick. The form of Eye of Dubai’s Doncaster win looks solid and he’s feared, particularly if the worst of the rain arrives. Solar Acclaim was close up in the same Doncaster race and is another to consider, along with Get It who would be dangerous if able to dictate matters.
