WELCOME E TO HEXHAM

THE RACECOURSE EXECUTIVE EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO ALL OWNERS, TRAINERS, SPONSORS AND RACEGOERS TODAY.

Today is our last Saturday meeting of 2024, the most popular fixture of the year and I would like to thank the Newcastle Falcons and Events team responsible for all oncourse catering for their sponsorship and support of today’s fixture Thanks also go to L&R Pest Control Services who have not only sponsored the 2nd race but brought along a team of staff and friends to enjoy the racing.

This meeting along with Chepstow who race today are usually viewed as the start of the National Hunt Season. We only have 3 fixtures remaining this year but this is generally a time when all the horses are being readied for their winter campaigns.

It was this time last year when The Premier Racing Project was being much lauded, how it was seen as a trial to increase prize money for those courses staging such fixtures and improve Great British Racing. The increase in funding to the Premier Fixtures was at the expense of funding to the core fixtures such as ours, however I am pleased to report that we have increased our overall prize money for this fixture albeit by £1,700 despite receiving less funding from the Levy Board.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable and successful days racing.

Robert Whitelock Racecourse Manager

BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS

DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET - WIN OR EACH-WAY

The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright An each-way bet is effectively two bets – one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4 A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - Win bets only, no places offered

• 3 or 4 runners – Win bets only Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2.

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win” Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings

Cases can be made for plenty of these, but the suggestion is HELLO JUDGE, who enjoyed a terrific 2023/24 campaign and his final effort of the season was too bad to be true. He can get the better of Coqolino, who stopped the slide from a falling mark at Cartmel in August and should go close providing his jumping holds up. Monochromix and Ribeye can fight out minor honours.
