WELCOME E TO HEXHAM

THE RACECOURSE EXECUTIVE EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO ALL OWNERS, TRAINERS, SPONSORS AND RACEGOERS TODAY.

This afternoon’s fixture heralds the start of our 3 June meetings before our summer break returning on Friday 4th October for the remaining 5 fixtures of the year. The prolonged spell of wet weather has certainly brought with it many challenges in terms of track preparation and a huge credit to our groundsman for producing an excellent running surface throughout the year to date.

Thanks as always go to our sponsors Stuart Robertson responsible for our first race celebrating Susan & Neve’s birthday, the Marrill Group who have sponsored at this meeting in previous years, Langley Castle an outstanding small hotel in the area, who provide us with many prizes we offer through our social media competitions and Paul Hughes who has sponsored the fifth race in memory of his late wife

Thanks go to the Ursa Major syndicate who recently lost one of their stars, Event of Sivola who was victorious over both 3 and 4 miles on previous visits to Hexham and have sponsored today’s feature race in his memory.

If you require assistance whilst on course please contact the race day office situated next to the turnstiles or ask a member of racecourse, stewarding or catering staff who will be pleased to assist

BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS

DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET - WIN OR EACH-WAY

The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright An each-way bet is effectively two bets – one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4 A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - Win bets only, no places offered

• 3 or 4 runners – Win bets only Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2.

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win” Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings

PORTSMOUTH did well to last as long as he did at Goodwood last month, considering the combination of a step up in trip/much more testing ground and a refusal to settle, so he remains of firm interest, especially now back at the scene of his reappearance success. Persica put in a sustained run from a long way back at Newbury on his most recent outing and ought to go well again, with Bubbles Wonky an interesting handicap debutant upped to a trip that promises to suit

EMBESTO developed into a smart performer as a 3-y-o, dead-heating for success in a Group 3 at Salisbury, and he can resume his progress after a slow start left him on the back foot at Newmarket on his reappearance. GRANDLAD confirmed himself a useful sprinter in the making when adding to his tally over this trip at Goodwood 7 days ago, asserting close home having pulled clear with the runner-up. A 3lb rise for that looks fair and he shades the vote to complete the hat-trick. Due For Luck got firmly back on track and was unfortunate not to score on return and he’s feared, along with his Chesterconqueror Knicks, equipped with a first-time visor Sturlasson and Mashadi complete the shortlist

CLARENDON HOUSE arrives at the top of his game and his strong-travelling style is suited to this speedy track so he is taken to build on last year’s third here. The handily-weighted Silky Wilkie was runner-up in this 12 months ago and could emerge as the main danger, although a host of others can also have a say in a typically competitive Dash, notably Looking For Lynda, The Bell Conductor, Dream Composer and Live In The Moment

While LOS ANGELES was no striking winner of the Leopardstown Derby Trial on his fast-ground reappearance he was nicely on top at the line and looks sure to benefit from the step up to 1 1/2m. He won’t be inconvenienced should there be any ease in the going having won a Group 1 on soft at 2 and looks a solid alternative to stablemate City of Troy, who looked outstanding at 2 but bombed out in the 2000 Guineas. PLAY SMARTER

ZIGGY made a promising return to action from 15 months off when finding his well-handicapped stablemate too strong here over 1 1/4m just under 6 weeks ago, and with that outing sure to have blown away any cobwebs, Harry Eustace’s 6-y-o is taken to notch career victory number 4 at the expense of Dream Harder, who is threatening to come good again soon judged on his recent Chester fourth. Kotari arrives in search of a 4-timer, and he can fight out minor honours with Asgard’s Captain.

DR SHIROCCO looked a shade unlucky when chasing home Elleon over C&D 11 days ago and he is taken to get the better of that rival this time. It’s by no means a two-horse race, though, with Ashington and Zwicky both viable candidates, too.

Event of Sivola was a dream horse for a syndicate, running 40 times and winning six races for Ursa Major Racing and Mark Walford over five years.

He was never happier than when running at his beloved Hexham Racecourse - a track he visited 10 times, winning twice and placing a further six times.

He came to life over the famous Hexham fences, winning over marathon three and four mile trips - he was hard to pin back once he got to the front and into a jumping rhythm.

It was an honour to be associated with such a brave horse and we thank everyone who supported him, especially Christine, who won many best turned out awards and loved him more than anyone.

PLAY SMARTER

An ultra-competitive closer to the Derby Festival and although he may be at least a couple years older than any of his rivals, MR WAGYU is selected to enhance his fine record in this race and snap a losing streak going back almost 2 years. Mums Tipple shaped quite well without being seen to best effect at Newmarket 4 weeks ago so he can give the selection most to think about, with Apollo One, Russet Gold and Strike Red a handful of others to consider, too.
