Hexham Racecard - Thursday 14th March

Page 1

E TO HEXHAM

We are pleased to be racing again following our winter break and the Racecourse Executive extend a warm welcome to all Owners, Trainers and Racegoers in attendance today. Thanks go to Betting.Bet, first time and principal sponsor, BK Racing regular sponsor of today’s long distance race and Paxtons.

A notable change going forward, William Hill have taken over the operation of the racecourse betting shop. With Britbet operating for a number of years we felt a change to William Hill with their years of experience of running high street betting shops would provide an increased service and experience for you the racegoer.

As you will see we have been busy during the winter break erecting a permanent building on the marquee site to provide protection against the elements throughout the year Unfortunately the inclement weather at the beginning of the year delayed construction and as a consequence we are unable to allow access into the building today.

Whether you are a regular at the track or visiting for the first time we hope you have a successful and enjoyable day and look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS

DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET - WIN OR EACH-WAY

The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright An each-way bet is effectively two bets – one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4 A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - Win bets only, no places offered

• 3 or 4 runners – Win bets only Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2.

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win” Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings

PLAY SMARTER

HERITIER DE SIVOLA showed much more than previously over fences (equipped with cheekpieces) when second at Ayr 4 weeks ago, doing some good late work despite some sketchy jumping. He’s potentially very well treated if building on that and could be worth chancing. Morozov Cocktail isn’t the most consistent but he’s fallen to a handy mark and can’t be dismissed. Gibberwell may appreciate a return to this C&D

PLAY SMARTER

There is more to come from CLEATUS POOLAW, who has a profile not too dissimilar to that of Delta Work, successful as a novice in this for connections back in 2018, and with this stiffer test sure to suit he’s taken to come out on top. The Leopardstown handicap Gaoth Chuil won at Christmas often throws up the winner of this and she’s a big player Cuthbert Dibble and 2021 Golden Miller-winner Chantry House are a couple of the other leading contenders.

Although STAGE STAR bombed out in a C&D handicap last time his overall Cheltenham record, which includes a win in last year’s Golden Miller, provides hope that he can bounce back to form with a bang. The likelihood of a soft ground is a slight worry for Banbridge so it could be that the chief threat comes from last year’s winner Envoi Allen, a 3-time Festival scorer

The veterans came out on top in last season’s renewal, but TEAHUPOO was a close third when only a 6-y-o and has improved again this year judging by the manner of his win in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse on his return in December, so looks the one to beat Fellow 7-y-o Crambo appeals as the main threat given the rate of his progress, though top-class chaser Noble Yeats won the Cleeve Hurdle on only his third start in this sphere so is a fascinating contender TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.TEAHUPOO (FR) 2.CRAMBO 3.NOBLE YEATS (IRE)

PLAY SMARTER

A useful, dual winner over hurdles, THEATRE MAN has yet to taste success over fences, but he won’t be long in bucking that trend judged on his fine second in the Timeform Novices’ Handicap (very strong form) over C&D in January, and with the prospect of more to come, he can prove a 3lb rise lenient and prevail. Recent Exeter-scorer Crebilly is another of significant interest provided his jumping holds up back in handicaps, with Saint Felicien and In Excelsis Deo other improvers to note.

PLAY SMARTER

BRIGHTERDAYSAHEAD has looked a class act on each visit to the racecourse, again barely asked a question when easing to success in a listed event at Navan a month ago, so she’s marginally preferred to Jade de Grugy, another bright prospect representing a top Irish yard. Dysart Enos was highly impressive at Doncaster last time and looks the clear pick of the British contingent

2023: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR

Stewards Note: TIP TOP TONTO: Following its run on 6/2/2024 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed.

Probable S.P’s: 3-1 Raffles Wonder (FR), 5-1 Brian’s Jet (IRE), This Is Bob (IRE), 13-2 Melvich Bay (GB), 12-1 Am Still Here (IRE), 16-1 Ask Bob (IRE), Bushmill Boy (GB), 18-1 Tip Top Tonto (IRE), 33-1 Red Shield (IRE), 50-1 Milltown Lily (IRE), 100-1 Star of Markinch (IRE) PLAY

RAFFLES WONDER has had issues with his refusal to settle over hurdles but he showed more when third at Newcastle last time and he’s potentially thrown in based on his bumper exploits, so he’s preferred to This Is Bob, who also took a step forward last time. Brian’s Jet is more exposed but should give his running.

INOTHEWAYURTHINKIN hasn’t been missed in the market and with good reason on the back of an eye-catching first foray into handicaps at Leopardstown last month. He lacks experience for a race like this but his third-placed finish in Grade 1 company in Ireland suggests he can outclass these. Angels Dawn was a smooth winner of this a year ago and a bold repeat bid is on the cards, even from 11lb higher Irish raiders look set to dominate, with Where It All Began completing the shortlist
