BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS

DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET - WIN OR EACH-WAY

The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright An each-way bet is effectively two bets – one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4 A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - Win bets only, no places offered

• 3 or 4 runners

Win bets only Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2.

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win” Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings

DECLARED RUNNERS 16 2022: JOHNSON’S BLUE (IRE) 5 11 8 Tom Midgley 3-1 (Mark Walford) 15 ran

JOANNA I’M FINE: Following its run on 6/4/2023 it was reported that the horse would prefer a sounder surface.

Probable S.P’s: 13-2 Having A Barney (IRE), 7-1 Aazza (IRE), 8-1 Dillarchie (GB), 9-1 Freethinker (IRE), Pipers Cross (IRE), 11-1 Something Golden (IRE), 12-1 Fiadh (IRE), 14-1 Tara Brooch (GB), 16-1 Joanna I’m Fine (IRE), 20-1 September Daisy (GB), 28-1 Gypsey’s Secret (IRE), Lockdown Leader (IRE), 33-1 Velasco (IRE), 40-1 Lady Bowes (GB), The Black Squirrel (IRE), 100-1 Songbird’s Tale (GB)

Last year’s renewal of this race went to one trained by Mark Walford and in TARA BROOCH and Having A Barney the yard saddles two live contenders this time round, too. The latter’s claims are the more obvious but it’s not hard to envisage the well-bred Tara Brooch taking a big step forward now moving into handicap company and going up in trip. If able to put his reappearance run behind him, Freethinker won’t be far away and Pipers Cross is also of interest.

This looks trappy and the suggestion is UP FOR PAROL, who was a fine third in the valuable Lanzarote Hurdle in January and would have every chance if able to reproduce form akin to that on this second chase start. Paddy The Horse clearly likes it here (hurdles record at this course reads 2311) and he looks dangerous, while Vintage Fizz could have a say if his jumping passes the test now switched to fences. Twoshotsoftequila appears to be better suited to more conventional tracks.

2022: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR

LASTIN’ MEMORIES: Following its run on 1/3/2023 it was reported that the horse’s saddle slipped late-on.

Probable S.P’s: 10-3 Without Conviction (IRE), 11-2 Ex S’Elance (FR), 6-1 Skyhill (IRE), 13-2 Event of Sivola (FR), 15-2 Eveque (FR), 10-1 West Lawn (GB), 12-1 Dolly Dancer (IRE), 20-1 Ballynagran (IRE), 40-1 Robert d’Ores (FR), 100-1 Lastin’ Memories (GB), 150-1 Abouttimeyoutoldme (GB) PLAY

It could be worth chancing DOLLY DANCER, who hasn’t shone since striking over this C&D last summer but she’s been given a chance by the handicapper and there were positives to glean from her latest effort at Kelso (travelled well for a long way back from a 2-month break). Without Conviction is an obvious threat following her Ayr success and she is next on the list ahead of recent point winner/ chase debutante West Lawn (2-2 over hurdles here) and Event of Sivola.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

Hexham Racecourse employs veterinary surgeons whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse

In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the Racecourse’s Veterinary team.

Qualified Paramedics and Doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving the treatment.

This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment.

In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the Racecourse’s Veterinary team

Qualified Paramedics and Doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving the treatment.
