D = disqualified Bold form figures = performance in All-weather (Flat) or point-to-point (Jump) races
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope Can be given little or no chance
BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS
DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET WIN OR EACH-WAY
The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright An each-way bet is effectively two bets one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4 A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners Win bets only, no places offered
• 3 or 4 runners Win bets only Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2.
• 5 7 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1-2
• 8 or more runners 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4
PLACING YOUR BET
Shop around for the best odds When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win” Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings

THE WEATHERBYS NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK NOVICES’ CHASE
Race two on today’s card, the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Chase, sees eight horses go to post, with the 137-rated Rapid Flight setting the standard and as a consequence of his five chase wins, the six-yearold has to concede 10lbs to his seven opponents. Formerly trained by Nicky Henderson, the Midnight Legend gelding was bred by The Queen and carried her silks until being purchased by Jimmy Moffatt and owner Darren Mills. Picked up for £14,000, he has won five of his eight starts for Moffatt all victories coming at his local track, Cartmel and has seen his handicap mark rise from 106 to 137 in the process. Having got no further than the first fence in the Edinburgh Gin Chase at Kelso (suffered a similar fate to Sunday’s Cheltenham winner, Does He Know), he missed a valuable handicap chase at Bangor-on-Dee last week, but should get his conditions here.
The 10-year-old Oishin and Mossy Fen are the other pair with chasing experience under Rules, but the former is rated just 72 and being a maiden after nine starts over fences, is again sure to struggle, whilst the latter makes his debut for the Laura Morgan yard A Grade 2 winning novice hurdler for Nigel Twiston-Davies, he had two runs over fences the following season and ran just once again in Grade 2 company at Warwick for Christian Williams. The seven-year-old hails from an in-form yard and has the class to make an impact, if returning to somewhere near his best.
Mr Vango was a wide-margin Point-to-Point winner for Christopher Barber, whilst the other quartet are hurdles winners who are switching to fences for the first time Donna’s Double was the lowest-rated of the four over the smaller obstacles, but won over 2m at Newcastle (also won a bumper at the same track) and got to within 3 lengths of Hidden Heroics (won twice since, including at Exeter on Monday) at the same venue, before struggling at Ayr’s Scottish Grand National meeting. He has stamina to prove, whilst the other trio have winning form in the book over at least 2m7f
Giovanni Change won a Market Rasen handicap off 122 during the summer and was last seen running on the Flat at York, whilst Hillview is a strong stayer who also appreciates good ground. His handicap rating has increased from 89 in September of last year, to 130 following his recent second at Wetherby, where he stuck to the task well. He gets on well with Sean Bowen, who maintains the partnership and the jockey boasts a 30% strike-rate at this track, having won aboard eight of his 27 rides here. Hillview is his sole ride on today’s card. That leaves just Crystal Glory, who is arguably, the most intriguing runner of all. A winner over hurdles at this track at year ago (the only course winner in the field), Nicky Richards’ imposing six-year-old followed up at Newcastle next time (form that was boosted here recently when the third-placed Captain Quint won on chase debut) and he ran a sound race when runner-up to Hillcrest in Grade 2 company at Haydock. He went on to finish fourth behind Gelino Bello (already a winner over fences this season) in the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree and Richards’ horses continue in fine form. The winner of both starts between the flags in Ireland, he looks a smashing chasing prospect and remains open to plenty of improvement after just five starts for current connections.
