SATURDAY 31 MAY 2025

SATURDAY 31 MAY 2025
A very warm welcome to Haydock Park for the Betfred John of Gaunt Sparkling Saturday Raceday.
Today, we are delighted to host our feature races on the card, the Group 3 Betfred Nifty 50 Lester Piggott Fillies’ Stakes and the Group 3 Betfred John Of Gaunt Stakes Both races are good tests for high class older horses, with both winners of last year’s renewals, Queen Of The Pride and Tiber Flow, respectively, going on to win at Group 2 level later in the season
This highlights the standard of horse we will get to see on track here today and I would like to wish all owners and trainers of horses running this afternoon the very best of luck for their races and for the remainder of the season
We are delighted to have Betfred sponsor all our races this afternoon, extending the long-standing relationship between the racecourse and Betfred. It is a privilege to welcome the team from Betfred this evening and I would love to wish them a memorable day.
Looking ahead, we have a very exciting race schedule this summer with our upcoming music evenings where we welcome Jamie Webster on Saturday 21st June, Tom Jones on Friday 4th July and Becky Hill on Friday 8th August Tickets and Hospitality are selling fast so if you haven’t already, I would encourage you to book soon to avoid disappointment. Full details of all our fixtures are available at www.thejockeyclub. co.uk/haydock
Finally, I would like to wish Mike Lake, from our grounds team, a very happy retirement having retired from the racecourse duties this week Mike has been at Haydock for 27 years and has been an incredibly hard-working and well-liked member of the team during his time We wish him all the best for his retirement
We hope you have a wonderful day with us, and we hope to welcome you back to other racedays throughout 2025
Warm wishes,
Simon Tonge General Manager

A very warm welcome to all of our Annual Members on John of Gaunt Day, where ITV cameras are present, and the sevenfurlong specialists come to the fore.
We especially welcome our Annual Members today whoareLancastrianssinceJohnofGauntwasthefirst Duke of Lancaster. We would welcome our members from Ghent in Belgium, whom the latter part of John’s name was anglicised from, but we don’t have any. Should any of you know anyone from Ghent who wants to become an Annual Member, please ask them to get in touch. I’m sure they’d like today. Were John of Gaunt around, which would be some feat given he died 619 years ago, I am sure he would have enthused about the smorgasbord of facilities available to you today, with viewing boxes and your dedicated bar and seating area. In all seriousness, today’s contest sees some top class animals over a specialised distance do battle. It is an outstanding race with a rich history.
The Achilles Stakes over five furlongs shows off speedsters today. In Greek mythology, Achillies won the Trojan War, but today it is apt we remember a true trojan of the weighing room in Lester Piggott Lester rode his first and last winner here and when a person is known colloquially by their first name, it is illustrative of how iconic they were Lester kindly came and had photographs with Annual Members a few years ago and he is a much-missed figure in the sport as a whole. It is fantastic that his daughter Maureen remains a frequent visitor to Haydock Park, and very often in the winners enclosure too.
It has been pleasurable to see so many members at our various reciprocal visits around the country. I am sure you’ll be delighted to attend our forthcoming Hexham (again) and Salisbury reciprocals in a few weeks. As a reminder, we race in three weeks for a thoroughly pleasurable evening, with musical embellishments live after racing.
I hope you have an enjoyable and successful days racing.
STEPHEN DARBYSHIRE Annual Members Representative

This is wide open but it could payto side with the Gosdens’ lightly-raced 4-y-o SHADER who looked a very good prospect when bagging a pair of AW novices last September and is open to plenty of progress on his first go in handicap company. The progressive Steel Tiger heads the list of dangers, although FoxJourney starts out for Kevin Ryan on a handy-looking mark and must enter calculations, while Naqeeb, Stressfree and Lieber Power all need factoring into this cracking handicap too.

DURHAM CASTLE proved most progressive during a light 3-y-o campaign, making a mockery of his opening markwhen a clear-cutwinnerat Goodwood (6f)when last seen in September Verymuchthe type to progress further, he’s fancied to make a bold bid to defy a 9lb rise with his yard going well. Fine Interview also progressed nicely last term and is a big danger following his excellent reappearance third at Doncaster Kodi Lion, Grant Wood and Sergeant Wilko are also considered.

RACE RESULTS
Following a decisive win on last year’s reappearance, JASOUR was campaigned exclusively in Group 1 company and having had a breathing operation, he’s sure to be well prepared for this return. He can make the most of this drop in grade, probably at the chief expense of No Half Measures, though Leovanni is something of an unknown quantity as a high-achieving juvenile last season getting weight all round here. ESTRANGE ran out an authoritative winner of a Doncaster Listed event on her final outing in November and looks an unexposed filly to keep on the right side of this year, particularly now stepping up to around 1 1/2m, so she has to be considered the one to beat. Shaha resumed her progress in emphatic fashion on her return at Goodwood and is likely to pose a major threat with fitness assured, while Beautiful Love warrants respect back down in grade, too.

AUDIENCE escapes a penalty for his Group 1 and 2 wins last season and should take a bit of stopping if a return to 7f sees him recapture his best form. Alyanaabi was right back on song to win a course Listed race on his reappearance and is feared most ahead of the classy Kinross, who has a 5lb penalty for his Group 2 win last autumn.

PLAY SMARTER
It was a much-belated first taste of success that CALLIANASSA enjoyed at Southwell on her penultimate start, but judged on her latest eye-catching effort that wait for a second career win is unlikely to be anywhere near as long. Indeed, connections clearly mean business here having secured the services of Oisin Murphy and she gets the nod ahead of Mostar Dreams and Arabian Leopard, both of whom are greatly respected. Oolong Poobong is also shortlist material.
We have agreed with our vets that the screen should be erected, whenever a horse requires veterinary treatment on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

Given his all-weather juvenile form, it was no surprise to see AL SHABABI improve to get off the mark with ease on turf debut at Windsor last month. He can carry on that progression into handicaps and is taken come out on top ahead of recent course winner Organ, who may still be on a fair mark, with the step up to 1m expected to suit. Sea Founder and Criminal Shore are just a couple of others to consider

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
