Haydock Park Racecard - Saturday 23rd May

Page 1

SATURDAY 23 MAY 2026

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2026

WELCOME TO

Welcome to Haydock Park for William Hill Temple Stakes Day – Saturday 23rd May.

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Haydock Park for William Hill Temple Stakes Day, one of the highlights of our Flat racing season and an afternoon featuring two races with significant history and prestige within the sprinting calendar. I would like to thank William Hill for their generous sponsorship of today’s card

First run in 1965, the Temple Stakes has developed into one of Britain’s leading sprint contests, attracting some of the fastest horses seen on the turf over the past six decades. Notable winners of the race include celebrated sprinters such as Dayjur, Lochsong, Sole Power and Battaash, all of whom have helped cement the race’s reputation as a key trial for the summer’s major sprint targets.

Today’s card also features the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes, first staged in 1976 and widely recognised as an important stepping stone for the leading three-year-old sprinters Its roll of honour includes outstanding performers such as Marwell, Slade Power and Harry Angel, with many runners going on to enjoy success at the highest level later in the season

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the raceday experience, we are also pleased to continue offering the recently launched shuttle bus service in partnership with Warrington’s Own Buses. Running between Newton-le-Willows railway station and the racecourse on all racedays, the service provides a convenient and affordable option for racegoers travelling to and from the course, helping make raceday travel as simple as possible

Looking ahead, we hope to welcome many of you back next weekend for two fantastic fixtures. Friday 29th May sees our ever-popular 80s Night, while Saturday 30th May brings Sparkling Saturday, featuring the Group 3 Lester Piggott Stakes alongside an enjoyable afternoon of Flat racing and entertainment.

On a personal note, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sean Tracey, our Senior Event Manager, who leaves Haydock Park after nearly eight years of dedicated service. Sean has played a significant role in the delivery of many successful racedays and events during his time here, and on behalf of everyone at Haydock Park, I would like to thank him for his hard work, professionalism, and commitment, and wish him every success for the future

Thank you for joining us at Haydock Park today. I hope you enjoy an excellent afternoon of racing and wish all connections the very best of luck.

Join us for a Friday evening of racing at Haydock Park on 29 May 2026, with Betway 80s Night, complete with live music after the races. Dress in your best 80s gear and experience the thrill of the track with a retro twist!

Although FRIENDLY SOUL hasn’t been since winning the 2024 Prix de l’Opera, that Group 1 success marks her down as a class act here and she returns with her yard in very good form. Wemightakedlongway could provide the chief threat if first-time cheekpieces help her to recapture her best form. The progressive Dreamasar is next on the list.

DIVISION: Following its run on 1/5/2026 it was reported that the horse reared and was slowly away

Probable S.P’s: 9-4 Division (GB), 11-4 Venetian Sun (IRE), 6-1 Coppull (GB), 10-1 Spicy Marg (GB), 11-1 Brussels (GB), 14-1 Rock On Thunder (IRE), 18-1 Five Ways (GB), 33-1 Aqpan (IRE)

DIVISION can resume winning ways after showing improved form when third in a Group 3 at Ascot 22 days ago, looking unlucky after blowing the start and he should prove up to reversing that form with Coppull. Venetian Sun drops back to 6f having struggled at 7f+ and could well prove his biggest danger

PLAY SMARTER

STEM very much appeals as the type to step forward from his reappearance effort 5 weeks ago and, with his second behind re-opposing Eternal Force (meets him on 4lb betterterms) at Newbury in the autumn very strong form, all looks set fair for a bold showing with conditions in his favour Eternal Force is a big player despite top weight given his progression at 3 yrs, with Hot Cash another on the shortlist.

BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
