WELCOME TO

Welcome to Haydock Park for our 2026 Flat Season Finale. It is a pleasure to welcome you to Haydock Park for our final Flat fixture of 2026, as we bring the curtain down on the summer season. As we reflect on the past few months, there have been plenty of highlights to celebrate, not least the quality of horses, jockeys and trainers who have competed here throughout the summer. One of the standout moments was undoubtedly Almeraq’s remarkable victory in the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Cup last month. It was a fantastic performance on one of our biggest days of the year, and we wish connections the very best of luck as Almeraq heads to the British Champions Sprint Stakes, where he is currently a hot favourite. We will all be following his progress with great interest. Of course, the 2026 Flat season has not been without its challenges. The track issue experienced on Temple Stakes Day in May resulted in a significant interruption to our racing programme, with racing at Haydock Park unable to resume until August. This was an incredibly difficult period for everyone associated with the racecourse, and I would once again like to thank our racegoers, Annual Members, owners, trainers and jockeys for their patience, understanding and continued support throughout. Particular credit must go to our grounds team, under the stewardship of our Clerk of the Course, Daniel Cooper, alongside the wider racecourse team. I would also like to thank today’s sponsors; the European Breeders’ Fund, Vantage Consulting, the family of Jill Wilcox Jones, Weatherbys, Shape Engineering, the M6 Toll, and Racing TV for their valued support. Our sponsors and partners play an important role in the success of our racing programme, and we are grateful for their continued commitment to Haydock Park. Away from the racecourse, I recently had the opportunity to visit Champ de Mars Racecourse in Mauritius, an experience that offered a fascinating insight into a different racing culture and the importance of the sport to its local community. I have shared more about the visit and the experiences gained in this edition of the racecard, and I hope you enjoy reading about it. While today marks the end of our Flat season, we are already looking forward to the return of Jump racing. Our first fixture is the Grade 1 Betfair Chase on Saturday 21st November, one of the major highlights of the National Hunt calendar and a race that has produced so many memorable performances at Haydock Park. We look forward to welcoming you back for the start of our winter season and another exciting chapter of racing. I hope you enjoy an excellent afternoon of racing and a fitting finale to our 2026 Flat season.

Simon Tonge General Manager

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING Saturday 21st November BETFAIR CHASE DAY The excitement of the Jump season begins as the prestigious Betfair Chase returns, marking one of the biggest fixtures in the racing calendar. As the first Grade One chase of the season, the Betfair Chase sets the stage for an exhilarating campaign of world-class jumps racing. Racing fans can look forward to a thrilling day, where top-class racehorses, passionate crowds and unforgettable sporting moments come together.

A VISIT TO CHAMP DE MARS, MAURITIUS I recently had the pleasure of visiting Champ de Mars Racecourse in Mauritius, and it was a fantastic opportunity to experience racing in a very different part of the world. With its unique history and heritage, Champ de Mars holds a special place in Mauritian life and has the distinction of being the oldest racecourse in the Southern Hemisphere. The passion for racing on the island is evident, with the sport deeply woven into its culture and attracting a real sense of community on racedays. I would like to thank the Mauritius Turf Club for their incredibly warm welcome during my visit. It is always valuable to experience racing in different jurisdictions, exchange ideas and see the initiatives being delivered elsewhere in the sport. There is always something to learn, and visits like this provide a fresh perspective on how we can continue to develop the racing experience for our own racegoers here at Haydock Park. If you ever find yourself in Mauritius, I would certainly recommend putting a visit to Champ de Mars on your itinerary. After all, there are worse ways to spend a holiday than enjoying a raceday in the sunshine, experiencing the local culture and discovering how another part of the world celebrates our sport! My thanks again to everyone at the Mauritius Turf Club for making me so welcome and I hope a few pictures I took, do justice to this great racecourse. Simon Tonge

BRITISH STALLION STUDS ALMAQAM

The British EBF has been championing the staying stars of the future through its Future Stayers series since 2015. Comprising 10 races for two-year-olds over 7f and 1m during the latter part of the Flat season, the series is restricted to the progeny of stallions and mares who themselves won over 10 furlongs or further. These races provide well-bred middle-distance prospects with the opportunity to begin their careers as juveniles, away from the sharper, more precocious pedigrees that typically dominate early-season contests. The British EBF Future Stayers programme has already produced 12 Group 1-winning graduates, among them the 2026 Juddmonte International hero ITEM and Tattersalls Gold Cup winner ALMAQAM.

In loving memory JILL WILCOX-JONES Jill Wilcox-Jones was an adored wife, mother and grandmother who sadly died from leukaemia in 2016. She had received a stem cell transplant that was facilitated by the wonderful blood cancer charity, Anthony Nolan, which we continue to support. Jill’s professional career was dedicated to mental health and she spent the last 15 years of her working life, as a Principal Psychological Therapist for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (North Wales). The greatest part of her role, was to improve the health outcomes of people suffering from cancer. It was a service that she was responsible for setting up and it was held in high regard. After Jill died, the health board set up an annual award in her name, to celebrate the hugely positive contribution she made to services in North Wales. She is forever missed and loved by her family.

Eye of Dubai seals victory in the 2026 Ayr Bronze Cup.

Race preview from Weatherbys It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap at Haydock this afternoon, a five-furlong sprint with a strong field of 14 set to line up.

here at Haydock last time and both drop back down in distance from reduced marks. Heading the weights are I’m Next and Jungle Drums. The former, trained by Tim Easterby, has proven competitive in some of the season’s biggest handicaps and he looks well-treated from a 2lb lower mark than when runner-up in the Ayr Silver Cup. Jamie Osborne’s Jungle Drums was down in the field in the same race at Ayr but bounced back with an encouraging fourth at Goodwood last time.

Tony Carroll’s Secret Mistral is the sole course-and-distance winner in the field, having won twice here at the track, along with a further four runner-up finishes. The consistent six-year-old arrives here on the back of a good second from a wide draw at Chester and will relish conditions under Myla Coppins. City Captain proved a game winner last-time-out at Hamilton for Harriet Bethell and The Horse Watchers, the four-year-old now chasing a third success in four starts. Although raised 3lbs by the handicapper, the Aclaim gelding remains lightly raced and unexposed at this minimum trip. Iain Jardine’s Parisiac is 1lb better off with that rival for his third-placed finish at Hamilton and has been kept busy, with three runs since.

South Shore must hold strong claims. John & Sean Quinn’s Eye of Dubai is one who will be suited by testing conditions and the five-year-old was impressive when taking the Ayr Bronze Cup on soft ground. A Runner-up on heavy ground in his most recent outing, he remains in good form and the blinkers are retained here.

A progressive three-year-old won this contest 12 months ago and there are a few in this field that may match that profile. York winner Explosive Finnish managed to back up his victory with a good third in a big-field handicap at the same track on his penultimate start and can again go well back down in trip after a runner-up finish over six furlongs at Newmarket last time. Proof finished ahead of Zain Primus

South Shore has proven mightily consistent for the Robert Cowell team this season, finishing in the top two on all of his last seven starts since joining the yard, winning three of those. Marco Ghiani, in the saddle for that trio of victories, is back on board and he must hold strong claims.

SIXTH RACE

CITY CAPTAIN has improved again this year, justifying good support as he doubled his tally for the season in game fashion at Hamilton 18 days ago. A 3lb rise for that success looks fair and with underfoot conditions in his favour, another bold showing looks on the cards. Eye of Dubai has been revitalised by blinkers of late and he’s a big danger, with 3-y-o Explosive Finnish another to consider.

HBLB PRIZE MONEY The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
