Welcome to all our Annual Members for another National Hunt Season at Haydock

Park.

The Betfair Chase is our highlight in the jumping calendar and has once again served up a race to savour It’s thirteen years since Kauto Star won the Betfair Chase for a fourth time on a day those present will never forget

The race has once again served up a fascinating contest with Royale Paigaille bidding to retain his crown He seems to love Haydock Park as much as the Annual Badgeholders! Add to him, the prospect of young up-and-comer Grey Dawning and the talented though enigmatic Ahoy Senor, it is a race to savour

Whetting the appetite for the Betfair is a graded novice hurdle, a graded staying handicap hurdle and a graduation chase and, as an apertif, Famous Bridge bids to win our concluding handicap chase for the second year in succession

We also have a smorgasbord of exclusive amenities for members today, from a designated seating area to two viewing boxes high up in the County Stand.

Work has been ongoing since the Summer for our 2025 Annual Badgeholder offering. An abridged reciprocal fixture list is available in the members bar and it really is great way to meet like-minded individuals at fantastic value.

We also have our Festive Luncheon on the 30th December, with gastronomic delights available for our membership. Should you wish to attend, kindly note this is a pre-booked event only and numbers are limited.

Today really is a joyous occasion and I wish you an enjoyable and successful afternoon’s racing.

STEPHEN DARBYSHIRE

Annual Members Representative

A race full of potential with ROADLESSTRAVELLED just about the most persuasive option. An imposing sort physically, he’s passed each of his 3 tests in fine style and there should be plenty more to come. Country Mile is sure to leave the bare form of his Ayr win behind and is a big threat, while Lily du Berlais needs respecting, too.

HOME FREE has improved on the back of wind surgery/equipped with a tongue tie, following up his Uttoxeter success with the minimum of fuss at Ayr 26 days ago The handicapper has reacted but he’s unlikely to have finished improving yet on that evidence and can complete the hat-trick. General Medrano returns with his yard in good form and along with progressive 8-y-o Galunggung, heads the dangers.

IN MEMORY OF

Paul Renshaw “Fatty”

For over 35 years, Fatty served as a valet for Northern jump jockeys, dedicating his life to supporting the sport and those within it.

Known for his larger-than-life personality, Fatty was more than just a valet; he was a confidant, a friend, and a helping hand in times of need. His selflessness and dedication earned him the respect and affection of jockeys, trainers, and racing enthusiasts alike.

One of Fatty’s greatest legacies lies in the countless lives he touched with his humor, generosity, and warmth. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, and he will be remembered not only as a cornerstone of the racing community but also as a true friend to so many.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Fatty’s family and friends during this difficult time.

PLAY SMARTER

This is wide open but Harry Fry’s lightly-raced BEAT THE BAT appeals as an improver now going into handicap company for the first time so edges the vote Dan Skelton’s Punta del Este made an encouraging return at Carlisle and could emerge as the main threat, although plenty of others make appeal, notably Josh The Boss, Fine Casting, Steel Ally, Kamsinas and last year’s victor Park Annonciade.

A runner-up in the Grade 1 Mildmay at Aintree on his final outing last term, IROKO is fancied to make a winning return to action with further progress on the cards at the expense of Trewlane, who boasts a notably good record when fresh and having been sent off favourite for the Ultima when last seen, got no further than the second fence. We have agreed with our vets that the screen should be erected, whenever a horse requires veterinary treatment on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.

AHOY SENOR is a risky betting proposition due to his suspect jumping, but he looked as good as ever ridden more patiently than usual when third under top weight in the Old Roan at Aintree on his comeback last month and could be worth chancing. The obvious threat is Grey Dawning, who was the leading British-trained novice last season and should have even more to offer this term. RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
