Betfair Sprint Cup Day is here again and welcome to all our members on the highlight of the flat season here at Haydock Park.
Today, Inisherin bids to add to his wins in the Commonwealth Cup and Sandy Lane here in May. There are many challengers abound The race has been won by some superstars of the sprinting division prior to today with Be Friendly, Green Desert (1986), Danehill (1989), Dayjur (1990), Dream Ahead (2011) and Harry Angel (2017) Even the mighty Lochsong has been beaten in this contest 31 years ago
The supporting card is also festooned with quality the Betfair Ascendant stakes was won by none other than subsequent King George heroine Pyledriver previously. We also have Group 3 action in the Superior Mile and two exceptionally competitive 14-furlong handicaps for your enjoyment.

CICERO’S GIFT didn’t seem to take to the fast surface at Goodwood and had previously looked very impressive when making a winning return at Sandown, beating Holloway Boy. He can get back on track here. Karl Burke’s challenger deserves another day in the sun and is a big player. Regal Reality should go well again.

We have agreed with our vets that the screen should be erected, whenever a horse requires veterinary treatment on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.
A Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade of former racehorses takes place in the parade ring before the first race at approximately 12.20pm
The parade showcases the versatility of the Thoroughbred, together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers. Today’s parade features some familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including Ayr listed winner, Duke of Navan.
RoR, British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses retired from racing, actively promotes the wellbeing of former racehorses through retraining, rehoming, and welfare support. Their mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of all former racehorses by highlighting Thoroughbred versatility, educating owners, and establishing a nationwide safety net for horses requiring charitable assistance. In the equestrian realm, RoR annually stages 39 separate competition series across 14 different disciplines, catering to all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite.”
For more information visit www.ror.org.uk
16-year-old by Presenting, formerly trained by Nicky Richards Breeder – Keith Douglas
Duke of Navan was one of the flag bearing northern horses for a few good years for trainer Nicky Richards for owners David and Nicky Robinson.
Duke of Navan was broken in by jockey Brian Harding who also rode him on the racetrack., He was a yard favourite, and he was Nicky’s ride towards the end of his training.
He has gone full circle and is now living the good life with Brian’s wife Kelly who has taken him to many fun rides, camps and he’s been hunting all winter. He won his first RoR show in hand. He is ridden over the fells regularly and he will be aimed at the RoR classes in the summer.
Kelly says: “He is adored by all of us, and Duke of Navan still gets visits from those who have been involved with him from the beginning”.
2. KEMBOY – RIDDEN BY RACHEL SHARP
12-year-old by Voix Du Nord, formerly trained by Willie Mullins Breeder - Joelle Morruzzi & Philippe Morruzzi
Kemboy, the legend, a superstar and general lovely horse who has fitted into his retirement very easily He ran and won his last race, The Bobby-Jo, in February 2023, he was due to retire at Punchestown of 2023 but sadly, he sustained an injury on the gallop, so his retirement was brought forward. Rachel collected Kemboy in June 2023, he was then turned out in the field all summer and autumn, as it was felt he needed a longer break. He was brought back into work in December, mainly hacking, but he has attended two training clinics, which he enjoyed. The future is to do RoR showing and dressage on him, and some jumping, but we will see as it is still early days in his retirement.
Rachel says: “We are very privileged as a family to have Kemboy in his retirement and to take things slowly and carefully”

JER BATT: Following its run on 29/8/2024 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.
Probable S.P’s: 5-1 Shagraan (IRE), American Affair (GB), 6-1 Looking For Lynda (IRE), 8-1 Jer Batt (IRE), 11-1 Changeofmind (IRE), 12-1 Toca Madera (IRE), Night On Earth (IRE), 14-1 Jumbeau (GB), 16-1 Rocking Ends (GB), 18-1 Designer (GB), 28-1 Hyperfocus (IRE)
A case can be made for most of these but Mick Appleby’s SHAGRAAN is the least exposed and fancied to regain winning ways on the back of a very good York fifth last time out. Handily-weighted Looking For Lynda heads the list of dangers, although a solid case can also be made for Jumbeau, American Affair, Change of Mind and Hyperfocus in this very competitive sprint.

INISHERIN disappointed in the July Cup when last seen but he’d left the impression he could dominate the sprinting division given the manner of his win in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot so is well worth another chance. Fellow 3-y-o Elite Status put himself firmly in the mix for this when winning a strong Group 3 at Newbury and is next best ahead of his stablemate Swingalong, who backed up her excellent second in the Golden Jubilee when just denied in the July Cup TIMEFORM PREDICTION:

The one who stands out is ARKHALIA FLYNN who is progressing well and looks up to completing the hat-trick having overcome a positional bias in ready fashion at Windsor on his most recent outing. Nap Hand caught the eye putting in some good late work at Kempton last time and should be up to making his presence felt once more, with the lightly-raced Rogue Encore completing the shortlist.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
