EXPERT VIEW

A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.

How the experts rate the horse’s chances:

Look out for Letters: C D CD BF

= Has won at this course = Has won over this distance = Has won over this distance at this course = Was a beaten favourite

MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM / P F U R CO B S r

= New racing season = Missed racing season = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race = Horse fell = Rider unseated = Horse refused to race = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse = Horse was brought down = Horse slipped = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race = Disqualified

d Bold form figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races

2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race. 5. JOCKEYS Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Birthplace of horse 10. Days since the horse last run 11. Horse’s age 12. Jockey’s weight (stone and lbs) 13. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam) 14. Horse’s owner 15. Horse’s breeder 16. Sponsor

BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

ANNUAL

MEMBERS NEWSLETTER

Welcome to Haydock Park Annual Members. Today is our Virgin Bet Grand National Trial Day. It feels rather odd to be wishing you Happy New Year, but thanks to Baltic conditions earlier this year leading to the unfortunate abandonment of Peter Marsh Chase Day, that is indeed the case. Today is our Virgin Bet Grand National Trial Day. I am delighted to welcome you and your guests, as today is “Bring a Friend Day”. Guests of Annual Badge holders can sign up for Membership for 2024 today. The Virgin Bet Grand National Trial is always a fantastic, stamina-sapping contest. It is thirty years since Haydock Park was blanketed in snow and Philip Arkwright, our Clerk of the Course then, had the foresight to change the great race to Kempton Park on the same day. It was won by subsequent Gold Cup winner Master Oats. Other notable winners include Red Rum 49 years ago, Twin Oaks (whom our winning connections room is named after) and the hugely popular Bristol De Mai two years ago. Today’s victor has their chance to add to the illustrious rollcall. The supporting card is abounding with impermeable quality. One of our supporting races is The Virgin Bet Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle, which usually features a decent youngster. Frodon has previously took the two-mile contest, which unusually is not named after a person, but it is in fact Latin for “the winner of the games”. The Virgin Bet Rendlesham Hurdle is always a notable pre-cursor to The Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham, whilst class 1 status is afforded to both our staying novice hurdle and our opening mares contest which has been transferred from Warwick last week. Our closing contest sees some old favourites in a Hunters’ Steeplechase. Our reciprocal list has been finalised. It is a veritable smorgasbord of high quality and eclecticism, comprising of 81 days at the majority of racecourses across the land. In coming weeks, we have visits to Kempton Park and Kelso. Further information is available on the website or in the Annual Members Room. As with every fixture this year, an exclusive member’s bar area for refreshments is available, together with reserved seating and panoramic views from two private boxes, high up in the grandstand. I wish you an enjoyable and successful days racing.

Virgin Bet Grand National Trial Day 1:02pm - YOU WEAR IT WELL ran a lovely race last time out in a Grade 2 Mares’ Hurdle at Doncaster when narrowly defeated by Marie’s Rock. Stepping back to Listed company will be an easier task. She is versatile and handles various distances. Windtothelightning has been running well this season. She would probably need another improvement today but does have her chances. 1:37pm - 12-year-old veteranTOP VILLE BEN should find this assignment easier than the Grade 3 handicap race at the Dublin Racing Festival. He can still be competitive off a mark of 130. Good Work is worth a market check now stepping back in trip. 2.10pm - SALVER looks like the one they will all have to beat here. He was an impressive winner at Chepstow on soft ground over Christmas and this looks like a good prep run for his bid in a Juvenile Hurdle race at Cheltenham next month. Castelfort is a worthy opponent after winning easily at Chepstow last time out but may not have beaten much that day.

2.40pm - Botox Has will have his chances, he stays well, handles soft ground and ran well in defeat in the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham. Sounds Russian looks interesting in this race back after an 11 month absence (knee injury) when last seen in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last year. He is probably one to watch, however, on season return and after returning from injury. BUTCH (NAP) was well supported when winning a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day (11/2 into 7/2). He is a progressive sort. The distance and ground should be fine and is likely to be good enough to win this Grade 2 Virgin Bet Rendlesham Hurdle for Olly Murphy. 3.15pm - MY SILVER LINING has been in great form this season and won a nice handicap at Warwick last time out staying the trip just fine. The distance should be no issue for the gelding who now runs off a mark of 127. Iwilldoit was no match for L’Homme Presse and Protektorat last time out in the Fleur De Lys Chase but remains a threat in this Grand National trial now stepped back up in trip. 3.50pm - Lord Snootie disappointed last time out over Christmas when pulling up at Wincanton as 5/2 favourite. He had shown plenty of potential before that and it will be interesting to see how the markets sees his chances today. YES DAY could be well handicapped off 121 now stepped back up in trip to 3 miles. There was plenty of encouragement to take from his Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Cheltenham run before Christmas. 4.25pm - ISAAC DES OBEAUX looks very interesting now stepping up to 3 miles. He ran a good 3rd when last seen in January in a Grade 2 Novices’ Hurdle race at Cheltenham and further progress is expected today from the Paul Nicholls trained 6-year-old. Mt Fugi Park is unbeaten so far and steps up in trip. He is a point-to-point winner and should handle the extra distance. He looks a big player in this race for Jonjo O’Neill. Inox Allen gets a first-time tongue tie and comes here from the back of a wind-op. He looks to handle the ground and can make the running if needed. 4.55pm - D’JANGO beat the well fancied Tea Clipper last time out in a Hunters Chase at Warwick and looks a danger here if he can reproduce something similar to that run today. Iskandar Pecos is only a 6-year-old but has been running well in point to points including his last run out where he battled well to beat Evens fav Coolagh Park. Quintin’s Man improved last time out but may want better ground than what is expected today.

ROBINSFIRTH

Haydock Park’s Retraining of Racehorses Ambassador RoR is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity promotes the versatility and adaptability of racehorses for other equestrian activities following their retirement from racing. The Horses for Courses scheme showcases the wide range of disciplines that racehorses go on to enjoy after their racing careers have ended, providing racegoers with an ongoing opportunity to meet and learn more about racing’s biggest stars – the horses!

Robinsfirth’s owner Jennifer says: ‘Robin has become a favourite in our yard and is an absolute gent to be around. We started doing some in-hand classes at local shows together and he took it all in his stride and we even came away with a few rosettes. He had a very successful racing career around the country, even winning the trial for the Grand National at Haydock Park back in 2019. I keep in touch with his previous owners and send them regular updates on his progress and what we are up to. They are very proud that he was chosen to be the RoR ambassador for Haydock Park and are pleased he now has his forever home.’

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
