CODE OF CONDUCT
As part of our joint commitment to each other and the communities in which we operate, all racegoers should be aware of the Code of Conduct and observe the following whilst at our Racecourse. For the safety of other racegoers and racecourse staff, please consider wearing a face covering in busy indoor areas or outside where social distancing cannot be maintained. If you feel you may be experiencing any of the recognised symptoms of Covid-19, please put on a face covering and speak to a member of staff in a well ventilated area. It is best to travel home if it is safe to do so. Regularly wash your hands, use hand sanitiser and avoid touching your face and dispose of any used tissues appropriately. Familiarise yourself with your entry point and the location of amenities within the racecourse. We are operating a cashless event. On-course bookmakers/pool betting operators may accept cash. Enjoy the vast amounts of space around the racecourse and avoid congregating in busy areas (for example, along the rail or by the Winning Post). Make sure all walkways, corridors and doorways etc are clear before you walk through. Follow all signage and the instructions of staff, officials or any emergency service personnel present at the racecourse. Make sure other members of your group have read and understood these guidelines. Thank you so much for your continued support and co-operation. We hope you have a wonderful day with us.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

ANNUAL
MEMBERS NEWSLETTER
Welcome to Haydock Park Annual Members on our annual pre-Christmas meeting, Tommy Whittle Chase Day. First run in 1982, the Tommy Whittle Chase is named in honour of the late Tommy Whittle, a director of Haydock Park for 30 years, 13 of which were spent as Chairman. He died in 1981. The Tommy Whittle winners list reads like a Who’s Who of top three-mile chasers. Little Owl, Forgive n Forget, The Thinker, Twin Oaks, Chatham, One Man, Suny Bay and Cloudy Lane have all won it. A huge testament to the training abilities of the late Gordon W Richards is that he remains the winning most trainer of the race over twenty years after his death. In the supporting card it’s great to see a class 1 novice hurdle and thoroughly competitive handicap events run today. The beginners chase at 12:20 featured subsequent Champion Hurdle winner Buveur D’Air in 2016! It is to be hoped something close to his calibre is run today. I am also delighted that our Annual Members Lunch will take place on December 30th, free of charge to members. Last year’s food was a gastronomic masterpiece and I’m sure this year won’t disappoint. The cut off to register is today. Today is the last day of the naps competition. There’s a great amount of camaraderie amongst members in this with the free prize of a Membership, and the winner will be announced next week A reminder to all - you can renew your membership today for just £410 If you’re thinking of joining, or a present for your significant other, it really is a present which Santa should have in his sack. With an unrivalled list of reciprocals and many excellent days here, it is brilliant value working out at less than £14 per fixture. Finally, in my last column before Christmas , I’d like to thank all Haydock Park Members for their support this year. I’d like to thank all racecourse staff - Catherine Smith and Sherelle Bartholemew in particular but for whom the membership wouldn’t function - for their support and I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and hope you enjoy Boxing Day even more with Betfair Chase winner and runner up taking part in the King George! Ho ho ho!

As we mark 40 years of the Tommy Whittle Chase, today’s race remembers one of Haydock Park’s most influential figures. Tommy Whittle was a Director for 30 years, and Chairman from 1968 until his death in 1981. Throughout his tenure, he was instrumental in making significant improvements to the course and to Haydock Park’s jumping programme – not to mention being the first person in the racing world with the foresight to stage non-racing events on racecourses. Born in 1909 in Prestwich, Manchester, Tommy Whittle first became a director in 1951. Alongside this he continued to develop the family business, as well as working for MI6 and holding numerous other posts, including director of the Racecourse Association and Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. In his major contributions to Haydock Park, Tommy followed in the footsteps of his father, a keen sportsman and a director at Haydock Park for many years. Affectionately known as Big Tommy to differentiate him from ‘Little Tommy’, he was also an influential figurehead in the Lancashire Cricket League and Swinton Rugby League. Following Tommy’s death, the Whittle name lived on with his son Bill taking over as Chairman for the next 32 years, retiring in 2013. Tommy’s grandson Nicholas was the fourth generation of this distinguished family to preside at Haydock Park, serving for eight years as a board member at Carlisle and Haydock Park until 2019.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
