Official Racecard - £3.00 BET365 OLD NEWTON CUP SATURDAY 8 JULY 2023
Hello and welcome back to Haydock Park Racecourse for the Old Newton Cup Festival.
So far this week we’ve been treated to two days of excellent racing, with a further sevenrace card to look forward to this afternoon. The pinnacle of today’s racing is The bet365 Old Newton Cup Handicap Stakes which will take place at 3.15pm and attracts some of the finest flat horses in training and is always a very competitive race
The race represents the last tangible link with the old racecourse on Newton Common where racing took place from at least 1678 through to the move to the present course in 1899 Previous winners include several top-class horses including Collier Hill, Alkaased, Dangerous Midge and Dylan Mouth – and we can’t wait to see who will be victorious in this year’s renewal.
Racing will get underway today at 1.30pm with the Bet Boost At bet365 Handicap Stakes over 5f, while the last runners will be off at 5.00pm. I would like to take this opportunity to thank bet365 who are very kindly supporting all of today’s races. We wish them and connections a wonderful afternoon with us
After the last race, the amazing Bizzi Dixon and his 4-piece band will take to the stage and keep the party going with an hour-long set of Soul & Motown hits So grab a drink, hit the dance floor and celebrate an incredible day of racing with us!
We have a jam-packed schedule of racing to come throughout the remainder of the summer season, with a great combination of fantastic action on the track and top-class entertainment on the cards.
On Friday 11th August, Nile Rodgers and Chic will bring an evening of non-stop hits to the racecourse, while on Saturday 12th the Betfred Rose of Lancaster Stakes and our annual Ladies’ Day will be taking place.
If today you have been inspired by the action on the track then our Sprint Cup Festival on Thursday 7th September – Saturday 9th will be sure to get you excited. Tickets start from as little as £15.
To find out more about all of our fixtures, please head over to our website for information and tickets – www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/haydock

ANNUAL MEMBERS NEWSLETTER
Welcome to Haydock Park on one of our biggest days of the year, bet365 Old Newton Cup Day.
I’m sure you all enjoyed Royal Ascot How fantastic it was to see Triple Time add to his triumvirate of Haydock Park victories in the Group 1 Queen Anne. Today is a historic day of great significance for the racecourse It really is remarkable that the roots of The Old Newton Cup relate back to 1807, with establishing on this site in 1903 from Newton It’s a fantastic race for Members to watch.
Winners of The Old Newton Cup rhyme off the tongue with aplomb: Rakaposhi King, Sir Henry Cecil’s only winner of the race in ‘86, Glide Path , the last dual winner in 1993/4, trained by the muchmissed John Hills and Collier Hill in 2003 who established more air miles than Judith Chalmers to mention just three. Today promises to be another fascinating contest in the glorious July sunshine. The bet365 Lancashire Oaks is a fantastic race for filles and mares. Alpinista won the race two years ago and was a subsequent winner of the Arc at Longchamp. Today we see Sea Silk Road, winner of our race commemorating the legendary Lester Piggott back in June, bid to follow up It was so enjoyable to see the horse win, given Lester’s daughter, Maureen, is the wife of Sea Silk Road’s trainer, William Haggas
An oasis in the shade is available to you all today in the shape of your viewing area, viewing boxes and designated area
To anyone reading this thinking I want to be an Annual Member, now is your chance Halfyear membership is now available. This includes reciprocal days to places like Ascot, Doncaster and Goodwood as well as 15 more days racing at Haydock Park including concerts from Nile Rogers and Chic , Group 1 Sprint Cup and Betfair Chase
I’d also like to welcome annual members from York Racecourse today, and we hope you have an enjoyable afternoon
For those of you who can’t get enough racing, we have a reciprocal at Market Rasen tomorrow, in what will be a lovely day in deepest Lincolnshire over the sticks.
I hope you have a wonderful and successful afternoon today and will hopefully see you all. We race again in 13 days

PLAY SMARTER
Lots with chances but SQUEALER has dropped to a very handy mark so is fancied to gain a first win of 2023 at the chief expense ofTalha, who opened his account in good style at Redcar last time out. Kuwait City wasn’t seen to best effect when third at Ayr and can have a say too in a competitive sprint.

PLAY SMARTER
This is undoubtedly tougher than the handicaps PLEDGEOFALLEGIANCE has been winning but he didn’t need to be subjected to strong pressure at Doncaster last week and can complete the hat-trick. Lordship, whose trainer has a good recent record in this race, heads the many dangers along with Midnight Lion and Rogue Sea.

PLAY SMARTER
LA YAKEL hasn’t been seen for 9 months but he appeals strongly as one who can go on to better things this year and can make light of his absence Maksud shaped a lot better than the result in the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot and is second choice. Teumessias Fox disappointed in that same Ascot handicap but his Newmarket form prior to that looks strong and he can bounce back and also play a prominent role.

MAYO NEIGHS emerged with a lot of credit pitched into the Windsor Castle, finishing second in his unfavoured side (ninth overall), and from a very fair opening mark, he may outclass these. 6f may bring about more from Notta Nother and he’s feared most, though Je Ne Sais Quoi is likely to get back on track.

PLAY SMARTER
It was hard not to be taken with CHARTWELL HOUSE’s strong front-running performance over this C&D last month and a 9lb rise may not be enough to prevent him from repeating the dose, even in this higher grade. Fellow 3-y-o Ramazan put in a good shift in the ultra-competitive Britannia at Royal Ascot and, with this drop back to 7f a plus, he is feared most. The veteran Safe Voyage clearly retains plenty of ability and is likely to be in the mix, along with Gweedore.

PLAY SMARTER
MAN OF EDEN came from much further back than the pair he split at Newmarket last week and is still relatively lightly raced in handicaps, especially at this trip, so he’s well worth another chance to confirm his recent promise. Prairie Falcon found only an improver too strong at Doncaster on his most recent outing, so must enter calculations, along with Nails Murphy, who improved after a break/gelding operation at Goodwood.

VETS SCREEN POLICY
We have agreed with our vets that the screen should be erected, whenever a horse requires veterinary treatment on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
