Official Racecard - £3.00 SKY BET JOHN OF GAUNT STAKES DAY SATURDAY 10 JUNE 2023
Hello and a very warm welcome back to Haydock Park for another great day of racing here on Sky Bet John of Gaunt Stakes Day.
It’s great to see you all back here for what is set to be an exciting afternoon of flat racing Today’s feature race, which will get underway at 3.35pm, was named after John of Gaunt, the 1st Duke of Lancaster who lived in the 14th century. Previous winners include Warningford, Main Aim, and Pogo – and we can’t wait to see who will be first past the post in 2023
Elsewhere we have a further six races on the card, which will kick-off at 1.15pm with The Sky Bet Achilles Stakes I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Sky Bet, who are very kindly supporting racing today. We wish them and their guests a wonderful day with us here.
It’s also great to have Eric Alston here today, who during his career enjoyed great success at Haydock Park as the trainer of Reverence, who won the Sprint Cup in 2006 Eric retired from the sport at the end of last season and it’s an honour to have him here on a day which marks the achievements of his partnership with Reverence, with The Sky Bet Reverence Handicap Stakes at 1.50pm
We’re also delighted to have a race named in memory of the late great Lester Piggott and would like to extend a very warm welcome to many of his family and friends who are joining us today.
We have a jam-packed schedule of racing to come over the coming weeks and months, with a great combination of fantastic racing, great entertainment and world-class music on the cards.
On Saturday 24th June, the multi-award winning artist Craig David will bring his unmissable show to Haydock Park, while on Friday 11th August, Nile Rogers and Chic will bring an evening of fun to the racecourse
Between Thursday 6th and Saturday 8th of July we will be hosting our famous Old Newton Cup Festival – three days of racing that not only attract some of the best equine stars in the sport, but also provides the perfect opportunity to socialise with friends and family Each day offers something unique and a chance to enjoy the action from different parts of the racecourse
To find out more, please head over to our website for information and tickets –www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/haydock
For now, we wish you all a wonderful day with us and hope to see you again very soon
Warm wishes,
Molly Dingwall General Manager

ANNUAL MEMBERS NEWSLETTER
welcome to
Annual Members on John
We especially welcome our Annual Members today who are Lancastrians since John of Gaunt was the first Duke of Lancaster. We would welcome our members from Ghent in Belgium, whom the latter part of John’s name was anglicised from, but we don’t have any. Should any of you know anyone from Ghent who wants to become an Annual Member, please ask them to get in touch. I’m sure they’d like today. Were John of Gaunt around today, which would be some feat given he died 619 years ago, I am sure he would have enthused about the smorgasbord of facilities available to you today, with viewing boxes and your dedicated bar and seating area
The Achilles Stakes over five furlongs shows off speedsters today. In Greek mythology, Achillies won the Trojan War, but today it is apt we remember a true trojan of the weighing room in Lester Piggott Lester rode his first and last winner here and when a person is known colloquially by their first name, it is illustrative of how iconic they were Lester kindly came and had photographs with Annual Members a few years ago and he is a much-missed figure in the sport as a whole. It is fantastic that his daughter Maureen remains a frequent visitor to Haydock Park
It has been pleasurable to see so many members at our various reciprocal visits around the country. At Hexham last weekend, there was a fantastic turnout. I am sure you’ll be delighted to attend our forthcoming Cartmel reciprocal in a few weeks.
I am sure all at members at Haydock Park wish Kirkland Tellwright, our clerk of the course of twenty-two years a long and happy retirement when he steps down next March. Kirkland has overseen some fantastic changes at Haydock Park with a fine assortment of new races which were not here when he started. Haydock Park will miss you, Kirkland.
I hope you have an enjoyable and successful days racing.
A very warm
all of our
of Gaunt Day, where ITV cameras are present, and the sevenfurlong specialists come to the fore.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

PLAY SMARTER
Having established himself in better company than this last year, it hasn’t been plain sailing for RAASEL of late That said, there were clear excuses in the Temple Stakes here a fortnight ago so he’s worth chancing at this level. Equilateral was second in that aforementioned race over C&D and he has to be feared, with Regional well worth his place in this company.

ALL THE KING’S MEN is thriving under the expert tuteleage of George Boughey and can build on his eye-catching Epsom third to gain a second success for the yard C&D winner Mr Wagyu looked back to his best when third in the Dash at Epsom and rates a big threat though, while last year’s victor Silver Samurai is also weighted to have a say. LIVE YOUR DREAM has a long absence to overcome, but his yard’s runners rarely lack for fitness and he’ll surely go close if reproducing the pick of his 2021 form. Forza Orta ran well in a competitive event at York on his most recent outing and should be competitive once more, while Get Shirty is well worth a second look now returning to handicap company having faced stiff tasks the last twice.

Competitive fare with the vote in favour of CHARTWELL HOUSE. He was quickly back on track returned to a sounder surface when fourth in a deeper handicap at Newmarket 3 weeks ago and a repeat should see him firmly in the mix again from the same mark. Bussento shapes like this drop in trip will suit and he has a bigger effort in his locker In These Shoes and low-mileage Royal Charter complete the shortlist.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
