Haydock Park Racecard – Saturday 21st January

Page 1

Hello and welcome back to Haydock Park for our first fixture of 2023!

A New Year is exciting for many reasons and one of the things we’re really looking forward to is all of the action that will unfold here at the racecourse – and that starts right now with the Peter Marsh Chase Day.

Today’s feature race is the Grade Two Peter Marsh Handicap Chase, which takes a top-level staying chaser to win it and boasts recent winners like Bristol De Mai (2017), Vintage Clouds (2020) and last year’s hugely impressive Royal Pagaille.

A further three Grade Two contests are also to play out this afternoon, including the The New One Unibet Champion Hurdle Trial, a race which is named after course specialist and four-time Haydock Park winner, The New One.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who are supporting today’s card, including Sky Bet, Unibet and Peter Marsh. We would all also like to extend a warm welcome to the family and friends of Patrick Coyne and Simon Marsh, with the first two races of today’s card ran in their memories We wish you all a wonderful day with us here

As part of the #GoRacingGreen initiative, in partnership with Unibet, there is a #GoRacingGreen Area today at Haydock offering a safe and quiet space. You can access the area by heading towards the track side of the parade ring

The next time we race will be on February 18 with Grand National Trials Day. Here, we will see many of the potential candidates for Aintree line-up, with Haydock hosting one of the few recognised Grand National Trials in the country. The race always offers up a stern test of stamina and was won last year by Bristol de Mai, another horse who boasts multiple success around Haydock.

If you love visiting us here at the racecourse, now is the perfect time to sign-up to become an Annual Member Our membership package comes with more benefits than ever before, including admittance into 32 race days, complimentary race cards, access to our County Enclosure and a designated seating area You will also be able to avail of half price admission to all fixtures at Carlisle and reduced rates in our hospitality suites.

The Peter Marsh Chase, first run in 1981, has an illustrious roll of honour. Let us think back to Little Owl, Bregawn, Combs Ditch, Twin Oaks, Earth Summit, The Last Fling and Bristol De Mai and of course Jodami Jodami was such a great racehorse, he won this in 1993 en route to Gold Cup glory and again at the age of 12 in 1997 ,beating the much-touted Unguided Missile. Amazingly the 1997 renewal was run on good to firm ground!

It is good to see so many members at various racecourses on our reciprocal fixtures I’ve personally seen many of you at Sandown Park, Plumpton and Warwick this year, seeing some excellent racing Our reciprocal bandwagon goes to Cheltenham next week for trials day and Musselburgh the week after for their Scottish equivalent.

The naps competition starts again today. Always a competitive affair, this will run throughout 2023 with the prize being a free membership in 2024 It is open to all members and provides much merriment through the year

Should you wish to join our membership today, our sales office will happily assist you for the cost of £400 or £720 joint This includes all Haydock Park fixtures and a menagerie of visits to other racecourses.

PatrickCoyne(Paddy)

Patrick (Paddy) Coyne was a devoted member of Haydock Park and is remembered by the Officials and Staff, and in particular by the Medical teams, as a popular racing gentleman. Haydock Park was, in many ways, his spiritual home and it was a source of great joy to the Coyne families when the Management approved the creation and siting of a Memorial Bench on the County Lawn in his honour.

The newly named PATRICK COYNE MEMORIAL ALTCAR NOVICES CHASE today is the race which the Coyne families have dedicated to his memory. That it should have been awarded on the prestigious 'Peter Marsh Day' is so appreciated by us all.

Patrick was not only a passionate supporter of National Hunt Racing but shared his passion for life with ocean racing and flying. He was truly a Man for all Seasons. His untimely death at the age of 61 was a great shock to us all but we will ensure that he is never forgotten.

We express our overwhelming appreciation to the Management at Haydock Park and in particular to Liz and Mike for their invaluable assistance. We also pay public tribute to our dear friends Joanne Burke and Carly Sage from Aintree for their love and inspiration in helping this tribute to their friend, Patrick, to come together again today.

Simon Marsh Memorial Race

The second race on today’s card is run in memory of Simon Marsh, who passed away last year. Simon was, for more than forty years, a staunch ally of Haydock Park, devoting much time and energy to the success of the racecourse, including spells as a Director of Haydock Park Racecourse Co Ltd and as a Racecourse Steward.

Simon’s most obvious legacy is The Peter Marsh Steeplechase, the race being one of the top half dozen longest standing sponsorships in British racing. Today’s race takes place forty one years after the inaugural running, which saw Little Owl win, on his way to success in The Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Indeed, when Bregawn and The Thinker won subsequent races, The Peter Marsh Chase had the enviable record of supplying three Gold Cup winners in the course of its’ first five runnings. Subsequent winners have included Earth Summit, Jodami, Bristol de Mai, Vintage Clouds and Royale Pagaille, the race retaining its’ importance in the racing calendar and serving as a key landmark at Haydock Park Racecourse and a fitting tribute to Simon.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
