Hello and welcome back to Haydock Park for another afternoon of fantastic Jump racing!
It’s that time of year again and things are really starting to feel a bit festive around here so what better way to further get into the Christmas Spirit than with a great afternoon of action on the track.
Today’s Jewson Christmas Afternoon Jump Racing will get underway at 1.05pm with the Jewson Tool Hire Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race, while the last race of the afternoon will go off at 3.37pm
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jewson, who have very kindly sponsored all of the races on today’s card We wish them and their guests a wonderful afternoon with us
After today we next race again on Saturday 17th December for our Tommy Whittle Chase Day one of Haydock Park’s most iconic events of the year Bobby Grant was a popular two-time winner of the race for trainer Peter Beaumont on the turn of the Millennium, while Cannington Brook won back-to-back renewals of the race in 2011 and 2012
We also have our Last Fling Raceday on Friday 30th December, which is sure to be an afternoon of great racing over the festive period and the perfect way to bid a fond farewell to 2022
I can’t believe that it has been almost two weeks since the Betfair Chase was held here at Haydock Park, and what a fantastic day it was with the Dan Skelton-trained Protektorat first to pass the post in a thrilling race, in which the eight-year-old Eldorado Allen came second followed by Frodon in third. There was an amazing atmosphere around the track and within all of our bars and restaurants, and it was a day we will remember for a long time!
I’d like to thank everyone for coming today and wish you all a very enjoyable afternoon with us here at Haydock Park
WELCOMES YOU DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - SATURDAY 17TH DECEMBER TOMMY WHITTLE CHASE DAY

Successful in a strong race for the grade at Hereford back in March, POST CHAISE produced a promising comeback effort when third at Kelso earlier this month and, with potential for better still firmly intact, he earns the vote to build on that stepping back up in trip Sam’s The Man left his reappearance effort in his wake when third at Chepstow 12 days ago and is feared, along with One Fer Mamma and Theme Tune
My interest in racing, preferably National Hunt started at an early age with the odd Saturday bet. The first big race for me was the 1964 Cheltenham Gold Cup Dad was an Irishman and a big Arkle fan. Myself I was all over Mill House, the English champion like a rash. As the saying goes Dads know best and Arkle proved too strong for the English contender. In the fifty eight years since, I have never seen a better National Hunt horse than Arkle Let us never forget there had to be two handicaps done if he was an entry One if he ran and one if he didn’t.
On leaving school this horse mad teenager went for an interview as a betting shop settler, I was asked what bets I do I told him a yankee, round the clock and three doubles and a treble a few times a week. I was told sharply that they do not allow staff to bet in their shops! Nowadays that would be an asset to know about the sport! Not long after I got a job with British Rail, retiring late last year on the day I had completed fifty years service. So looking back my interview with Mr Jobsworth proved a blessing in disguise!
The greatest race I saw live would have to be the 1996 Cheltenham Gold Cup . My mate Dave had £20 on Wayward Lad who jumped the last just in front, next to him was a little old Irish lady who was screaming the short price favourite Dawn Run home up the Cheltenham Hill, both were extremely vocal. History tell us that the Irish mare got up close home to win, the little old Irish lady hand in the air in triumph turned to my mate and shouted I had 50p e/w on that! Racing is for everyone, that is why we love it! My other favourite race was the 1973 Grand National (Crisp v Red Rum). Living less than ten minutes walk from Aintree racecourse, I over the years wondered how I missed that as I have seen many Nationals over the years. The answer came not too long ago when reading sporting memories in the Liverpool echo On the morning of the race Liverpool had played Tottenham Hotspur in an early morning kick off to avoid clashing with the National. Pat Jennings, the Spurs goalkeeper, had saved two Liverpool penalties on the day! I remembered being in the Kop that day , what a day for Merseyside Sport.
This first year of retirement I have enjoyed getting around to race meetings and continuing my love affair with LFC which began in 1960
Finally a big thank you to my wife Dot who is with me today for putting up with my love of sport for all these years, It is also today our Wedding Anniversary I hope everyone has a great day racing and the results are punter friendly (sorry bookmakers) and best of luck to all the staff at Haydock and best of luck for the future. Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
