Page 1

THE JOCKEY CLUB

Welcome back to Haydock Park for another brilliant afternoon of racing.

The seven race card begins at 1:30pm before the final race brings the afternoon to a close at 4:55pm. Our finale today, the PROSPICE21 Apprentice Handicap is an exciting contest as it sees the Haydock Park Apprentice Series winner decided. Christian Howarth is currently leading the series and rides Rainbow Jet in today’s race, but the final standings could all change today. We wish them all the very best of luck. Today has also seen a very exciting initiative before our gates opened, with over 300 students in attendance for the inaugural Housebuilders Careers exhibition in our Jubilee Suite, with some of the biggest names in the industry showcasing the fantastic careers available to people within construction We’ve seen Schools and Colleges in attendance from from Warrington, Wigan, Leigh, St Helens, Liverpool, Preston, Lancaster, Morecambe, Ormskirk and Manchester!

Our thanks go to the Home Builders Federation (HBF) and the team at Heylo Housing for their support in getting this event off the ground and we look forward to building it even further in 2023

As ever, we would like to thank our partners for their continued support. Today, our thanks go to Haldane Fisher, JW Lees, the Family of Lee Thomas Christy, Old Bootleians and PROSPICE21. We wish them and their guests a wonderful day with us.

We hope you are able to join us again tomorrow for another afternoon of racing that is set to be a competitive card. Tickets are still available on our website.

We hope you all have a great day, and look forward to seeing you back on course very soon.

Best wishes, Molly Dingwall General Manager

A case can be made for a few of these but DELOREAN still looked something of a work in progress when getting off the mark here so he can make light of a 4lb rise in the weights. LEE THOMAS CHRISTY

A dear loving son, father, brother and uncle with many friends. He was sadly taken from us far too early. He was a kind loving man who enjoyed a pint of Strongbow with his friends. He was loved by so many people and will be missed always. Rest in eternal peace Lee until we meet again my love, fly high and God bless.

PROSPICE

Merseyside, and in particular Liverpool, has developed significantly over recent years. However, Bootle has not made anything like the same progress.

In April 2012, a group of ex-pupils of Bootle Grammar School (closed down in 1960s), Old Bootleians, were brought together to help regenerate their old home town.

The project has two main aspects busi ness projects, aimed at increasing the economy and hence employment, and the second, assisting community groups helping the families and children of Bootle.

One business project, called “Logistics”, supported the £300 million-plus re-development by Peel Ports of the port, known as Liverpool 2 (L2). Part of our contribution was to involve major retailers to understand the benefits of L2. Our input contributed to a Peel change of their original strategy, resulting in a major Peel Port warehouse employing locals. The second was developing access for locals from Bootle and surrounding areas, and tourists, to behind the historic dock wall. Prior to our initiative, only dock employees had access to behind the dock wall. Exhibits are in modified shipping containers because they tell the stories of the docks. Our site at Collingwood Dock dedicates one container to telling the story of the development of Liverpool’s docks led by one Jesse Hartley. He built Waterloo and Stanley docks as part of enabling the import of grain to Britain on the then Government repeal of the Corn Law Act, circa 1815. Collingwood looks onto the original dock site built by Hartley. The Collingwood site also gives visibility to the historic mid-19th Century Victoria Tower. Victoria Tower was built by Jesse Hartley and was constructed between 1847 and 1848 Victoria Tower, which was often referred to as the 'docker's clock', was built as an aid to ships in the port, as it allowed them to set the correct time when they sailed out into the Irish Sea, while its bell warned

of impending meteorological changes such as high tide and fog.

We have a future plan dependent on funding to add to the Collinwood site, now renamed the Docklands Village, which will tell the story of Gladstone Dock. Specifically its role in “Welcoming the GIs” in WWII to Britain. This story will focus on the professional briefing paper given individually to all arriving GIs. It forewarned them of their reluctant necessity to salute British women officers, who to quote the paper “probably dragged her dead colleague off an Ack-Ack gun and kept on firing”. Or of appreciating the dowdy war-time dress of young women on Merseyside, who have “already withstood more high explosives than the whole US Army in WWI”.

We established an initial setup of a mini heritage ‘village’ on Collingwood Dock that with four containers housing historic content, information and themes relating to individual docks. One unit houses welfare facilities. This site had its official opening to invited guests on August 21st 2019 and then open to the public in controlled sessions from August 2019.

We have also allowed Everton Football Club to tell the story of the development of Ever ton’s new Stadium and the Canal & River Trust of its facilities, by adding their own shipping container displays alongside ours.

The Docklands Village gives unprecedented access behind the Dock Wall to visitors: visitors from Bootle, the rest of Merseyside; from the region and wider UK; and reaching out to overseas visitors to Merseyside

To develop ongoing support for the development of the DT, we created a body called the Friends of the Docklands Trail (FoDT).

The Old Bootleians call this major project Prospice 21, recognising part of the Bootle town motto, “look to the future”. The Prospice 21 project is ten years in.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
