Good afternoon and welcome to our National Federation of Roofing Contractors Raceday, the first midweek fixture of our centenary season.
We have a great afternoon of racing ahead of us with prize money of over £69,000 on offer across the seven-race card, with all races being run at no less than £1,500 above the new BHA minimum values and the whole fixture being run at 26% above those same values. This is all part of our continued commitment to prize money and the quality of the racing we stage here at Hamilton Park, with total prize money for the season set to exceed £1.74M for the first time in our history
A big thank you goes to all of today’s sponsors including the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, who are our title sponsors for the day We are also delighted to be welcoming Wyvis Roofing, One Stop Roofing Suppliers Ltd, ICB Water Proofing, Cupa Slates, David Hardie Engineering Ltd, Fixing Point and Compass Roofing, as well as the European Breeders Fund, all of whom are supporting a race on today’s card. I wish all of today’s sponsors and their guests an enjoyable afternoon of quality racing and hospitality
We should see some competitive racing across the card today, with the David Hardie Engineering Ltd Handicap (Class 4) at 4.05pm set to be a fast and furious contest over our shortest distance of 5f There are two course and distance winners in the field including two-time winner Classy Al for our 2025 Champion Trainer Jim Goldie, and Tiva who is at the top of the weights for David O’Meara. Each horse in this race has won over this distance previously with the Chelsea Banhamtrained Law of Average coming into today with winning form having won on firm ground at Bath at the end of April. I wish all of this afternoon’s runners and riders the very best of luck.
Looking ahead, June is always a very busy month for us with fixtures being staged every week. Next up is our Sodexo Live! Raceday on Thursday 4 June followed by fixtures on the 10th and 17th and culminating with our ever-popular Saints & Sinners Racenight on Thursday 25 June
Once we get into July and August we have some of our biggest fixtures of the season including our Jordan Electrics Glasgow Stakes Centenary Racenight ft Tide Lines on Friday 17 July, as well as our Cube Glass Ladies Night on Saturday 1 August, which will feature live performances from Girl’s Aloud star Nadine Coyle as well as The Wanted 2.0. It really is shaping up to be the most glamorous event of the summer, and with our Early Bird ticket price ending on Sunday there is no better time to secure your tickets at a discounted price Tickets are available online for all of our fixtures with some great savings to be made when you buy in advance at www.hamilton-park.co.uk, with no booking fees applied to your ticket purchase
Have a great afternoon and I hope you find a few winners!
Kind regards

Racing Jargon Buster
Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.
ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next
ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface
AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status
APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding
BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature
CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old
COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track
DAM mother of a horse
DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail
DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)
DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before
EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5
FILLY female horse up to four years old
FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year
FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)
GELDING castrated horse
GOING the description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. Official Jockey Club going reports progress as follows: Heavy - soft - good to soft - good - good to firm - firm - hard

JOLLY betting parlance for the favourite in a race - the horse with the shortest odds
JUDGE official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners
JUVENILE two-year-old horse
MAIDEN horse which has not won a race
MARE female horse five years and over
MONKEY betting parlance for £500
ODDS ON odds where the winnings are less than the stake (which is of course returned to you): thus a winning £2 bet at 2-1 on wins you £1
OFF THE BIT/OFF THE BRIDLE describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth
ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit
OVER THE TOP where a horse is said to have gone if he has passed his peak for the season
PACE ‘up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders
PADDOCK area of the racecourse incorporating the pre-parade ring, parade ring and winner’s enclosure
PATTERN the elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed
PENALTY weight added to the allotted handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were originally published
PHOTO FINISH electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish
PLATE shoe worn by horse for racing
PONY betting parlance for £25
RULE 4 betting rule covering deductions made from winning bets if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed but before the ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ signal; the amount deducted depends on the price of the withdrawn horse
RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle
SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse
SIRE father of a horse
SPREAD A PLATE when a racing plate or horseshoe becomes detached from an animal’s hoof, this sometimes causes a delay while the horse is re-shod

WEIGH IN/WEIGH OUT weighing of jockey before and after a race to ensure that the correct weight has been carried; the announcement ‘weighed in’ signals that the result is official, and all bets can be settled
YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets
YEARLING horse of either sex from 1st January to 31st December of the year following its birth
Sir Ian Good Memorial Sculpture
Commissioned in 2026 to mark Hamilton Park’s 100th year of racing, this memorial sculpture honours the late Sir Ian Good in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Hamilton Park, Scottish Racing, and the racing industry as a whole.
Sir Ian served on the Board from 1990 and as Chairman from 1999 until his passing in 2023. Under his leadership, Hamilton Park developed into one of the UK’s leading independent racecourses, including the addition of the on-site Hampton by Hilton hotel in 2019. He also played a key role nationally as founding Chairman of Scottish Racing, and held senior positions with the Racing Foundation, the Tote, and the Jockey Club.
In collaboration with the Good family, the sculpture has been created by renowned sculptor Michael Turner who specialises in creating unique, handcrafted artwork using marine grade stainless steel. With the working title of ‘A Dynamic Force’, each individual panel of stainless steel has been shaped by hand to create a sculpture that embodies the energy and excitement of horse racing, showcasing the power and grace of the horse in motion alongside the unique harmony that exists between horse and jockey.
Located between the Hampton by Hilton Hotel and the Sir Ian Good Grandstand, this sculpture stands as a lasting tribute to his vision, leadership, and legacy
The design includes subtle tributes to Sir Ian’s life and legacy, so please do visit the sculpture to see them for yourself.

(HAMILTON PARK 2YO SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

(CLASS 4) (FOR HORSES IN BANDS C AND D) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile and one furlong and is for three to five year olds only. There are a variety of reasons why the threeyear-olds in this race are still light on experience Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
RACE STATISTICS

RACE SUMMARY: BEARISH was workmanlike when landing the odds from the debuting Pepsea on his return at Thirsk but wasn’t seen to anything like best effect in a messy contest and can do better again. RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could
a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 80 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.
RACE STATISTICS

THE DAVID HARDIE ENGINEERING LTD HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

ONE MILE about 68 YARDS (8f abt 68yds) (1600m)
THE FIXING POINT CLADDING FASTENERS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile half a furlong handicap race for three-yearolds which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Seventh Race
THE COMPASS ROOFING HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and half a furlong handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular
would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65.
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (20-25): J Goldie (68 wins from 494 runners, 14%) runs SANAFI ZABEEL & YAASER
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (9 wins from 101 runners, 9%) runs BARLEY
Longest Traveller: DONNA NOOK trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 7-2 Union Island (IRE), 4-1 Eve’s Boy (GB), 9-2 Barley (IRE), 11-2 Sanafi Zabeel (FR), 6-1 Donna Nook (GB), 16-1 Yaaser (IRE), Starliner (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: It’s been a long time since BARLEY last got his head in front but he showed plenty of his spark remains at Thirsk and could capitalise on this drop into a 0-70 if building on that. Sanafi Zabeel probably won’t be long in winning for Jim Goldie, while Union Island can go well again after a 2lb nudge for his Leicester success.
